When I decided to learn English, I didn't bother learning words at all. I read a 10-page English grammar and immediately started reading the Wheel of Time series, which consists of 14 books. At first I could only read 1 page a day, but by the end of the year I could read 15 while listening to an audiobook. In a nutshell, after 3 years I don’t care whether I read in English or in my native language. I listen to audiobooks at 1.5 speed, as if in my native language.

as a learner, I'd like to say you are one of the most qualified individuals I've seen on KZfaq. what you are mentioning is what I'm understanding day in and day out. I can say there is a valuable and maybe tragic reality about learning a new language especially, as an adult, that is you should put your time and effort into it. it's not going to be an easy process. Most KZfaq channels that teach English who are not qualified native speakers try to teach an exaggerated kind of English that even native speakers don't speak in that way. like using some advanced expressions or vocabulary so using them requires a lot of familiarity with the language and this leads you to fail in the right way of applying them. so, you feel frustrated. but this approach you are providing is a real and reasonable process that will lead you to learn better with a positive mindset.

When I started learning English the teacher taught me the word "roller coaster". Until then I've never seen a roler coaster before. Even using images I couldn't get my head around this word. Only when I went to a roller coaster myself I finally got it. So it's true that the vocabulary, initially, should fit the leaner's onw culture and knowledge of the world.

7:10 About the different contexts, ChatGPT is being very useful to me in that regard, I have set up the custom settings so that when i type a german word, or expression, it generates 10 sentences with it. The sentences are very concise and easy to understand, and it usually uses it in some different contexts which gives you a better grasp of the extent of the meaning of that Word/expression example: vorlegt ChatGPT Word Type: Verb Meaning: to present, to submit, to lay down 10 Sentences: Er legt dem Chef den Bericht vor. (German) He presents the report to the boss. (English) Il présente le rapport au patron. (French) Presenta il rapporto al capo. (Italian) Sie legte dem Kunden das Angebot vor. Oh good to know those have been updated. I knew the new versions but I wasn’t aware the those words were outdated. Sadly every current Japanese textbook, app or Anki card I’ve seen has the old versions.

Steve, with this new Whisper feature, you just made lingQ helpful for advanced learners. I can do sentence by sentence intensive reading, and intensive listening, because when you upload an audio file it time stamps the audio per sentence, so I can listen to the audio over and over, and put intensive listening and reading all at once.

It would be interesting to hear Steve's thoughts on lexile levels. It's not a topic I have seen anyone in the language learning community tackle. For those that don't know, books (in English, although I have found the scores to be transferrable to other (romance) languages) are assigned a score based on certain factors which indicate their difficulty. Once you know your own score (or lexile level), you can then search for other books that may either be at the same level of difficulty or perhaps a little bit higher. The intention of course being that you can slowly increase the difficulty and complexity of the content you are reading over time as you become a more proficient reader. Essentially, it provides a pathway to reading fluency through extensive reading. This also means getting into native materials much quicker rather than unduly sticking with, let's be honest, often dreadfully dull graded readers (Olly Richards, I'm looking at you). Would this make LingQ obsolete? No, I don't think so. It may just mean that imported ebooks chosen at the correct level will show fewer unknown words and the use of LingQ (or some other system) would facilitiate the checking of the relatively few unknown words in an efficient manner should one wish to do so.

Good suggestions of course. And nice progress regarding summaries. Now, at the end, you say you suggested 5 ways to improve comprehension. Next step, maybe have just a few seconds of video showing those 5 points again? ;)

Hello I'm from Argentina 🇦🇷 and I want to learn English fluent because my English is very basic I want to learn English with yours videos . I speak Spanish.

I Hear podcasts and watch videos in my two targets languages such are German and Italian

I am learning Japanese and trying to jump headfirst into games I already played in English. Looking up everything as I go, I truly dont know if this is smart, but its better than being paralyzed with indecision.

Comprehension of vocabulary works as follows. You see a new word and you don't know it, but you are able to glean meaning surrounding that word without knowing the word. You see the new word, now not new, again and you are able to comprehend the surrounding text a little better. The process continues and little by little your brain will impose a meaning on that new word, or the meaning will emerge form you internally. Can you speed up this process? Maybe! The more you experience the word in similar context the sooner the meaning will emerge. How is it that this is how it works? Because you have a massive vocabulary and did not have every word explained nor did you have to go to the dictionary for every word. Probably there exists in your vocabulary words still in this transitory state because you don't use them that often and if forced to define what they meant you might have difficulty doing so. This is why reading about a subject that contains subject specific words that you are not familiar with such as music or a science can be difficult. Because that subject has its own set of vocabulary and expressions that you have to internalize through regular use.

I read KZfaq comments for comprehensible input I my vocabulary is quite low at the moment watching anything or listening to anything most of the time is like 10-75% comprehension rarely 80-90%

In my opinion for that to will become more successful in your current language you should improving all sids and be more comprehensive, I mean like understand more content in this language and as well don't worry about words which you learn, because this only one of these different parts which will give to you really awesome level.

Steve can you PLEASE tell the workers of LingQ if they could implement a way to switch the way the speed goes. Right now it starts at 1x and gets slower, please suggest them to add a way for it to go forward (get faster) 🙏 1x --> 1.1x --> 1.25x -->1.5x --> 1.75x --> 2x -.25x -->-.5x --> .66x --> .75x --> .9x. --> 1x (please suggest a to also add 1.75x) Idk how you have had a list of speeds pop up.. mine does not do that.

If you are staying in same type of content,how do you get more vocabularies which are likely to be used outside of your interest and those are important and you should know? In reality we all understand pretty much all of words even if it was unfamiliar contents in our native language.

I have a frustrating experience. Not knowing where to begin or hitting a plateau can feel demoralizing and make it hard to hit the books and study like you know you should…Having friends from other cultures makes me more creative. In fresh ways about space and how people create their own world and environment. It is best way to connect between creative thinking and cross-cultural relationships.

I disagree about the 10-15% rule, and this is because I don't like to ever look up any words. Yes, it takes longer that way, but in the long run, I feel like I gain a better "feel" for the language, and I'm in no rush.

Hundreds of hours of listening in Portuguese and I still struggle in conversations 😢, *most of these hours are passive listening* while mowing.. listening to twitch.. music while working out sometimes.ect. but I am really pushing my vocabulary now because I believe it's definitely a lack of words. But also when I hear something I often can't UNDERSTAND IT at all in order to look it up.

Some people speak fast, some people don't. I can spead up only those who speak normally or slowly, otherwise I don't understand anything

I get what you mean that 95% isn't a magic number that needs to be followed, but 5% unknown words isn't going to take forever. If you read at 40 words a minute you will come across 20 new words with only 10 minutes of reading. I am currently reading content that is 80-85% known words for me, it's much more enjoyable than when I only knew 50-60% content. I would love to be able to read content that is 95% known words. I read an hour a day, 5% of the words being unknown is too many words to learn in a day.

As soon as i began learning a new language i start paying attention to small details of my one language. And to be honest a bit disappointed. So many layers so you will never fully aquire it( For example when russians forget something and by slapping themself on forheand saying ..."Семен Семеныч!!" It means that they are referring to old and very popular soviet comedy "Бриллиантовая рука" (сцена в такси). Or for example if russians are storytelling about very bad and frightening event unfolding saying " Это прямо как иди и смотри" They are referring to old movie about second world war with harrowing schene of nazies. Sure in english there is some similar layers the natives comprehend only. Is there Steve? Could you please give an example? Thank you!

Somebody is going to come up with a test for the target language to assess words known and not known and then use AI to create reading materials that are 80-85% of comprehensible content and 10-15% of new vocab content.
