Great video my friend! An analogy I heard of and really like is, that fencing is a dialogue between two liars (as both want to decieve their opponents). But if both just run around screaming (i.e. just executing their precomposed plans regardless of what the opponent does) the fencing will suffer and many double hits will follow. So listen to every word, but don't trust them :)

Ha, nice analogy. I generally agree with your idea Federico, although some take it to the other extreme - focusing so much on the opponent and trying to “survive” that they completely ignore what they already know. And then it’s an endless flailing or poor parries. Sometimes the advice to just “execute what you know” can work better. In have sent many people wanting to or starting sparring too early, while still having very poor technique. So they can’t focus on tactic. Overall good video, but you should make a second part ;)

@@AngelChernaevHistoricalFencing there is not a statement which is always true, as there is not a technique right for every occasion. In this video I pass a message which will be useful for some people, there are other good advices who contradict this advice which are good as well, but for other people! It greatly depends from which kind of person I have in front of me, and this is easier to understand during my private lessons, while instead, while speaking in broad terms, I have to focus on something clear, specific and not do too much “yes but” messy things! Besides this, what you say is true, but again: Someone can just try to pull out his one-two fendenti/oberhau action, but if he is not able to see that every time he try to to start a cut, the opponent just drop the point in front of him as a reaction, going for a double... It’s right, but also wrong, as many advices tend to be. They are contextual

Very true. I am trainer of a gladiator school I built up. And most of the newcomers are unaware of the mistakes/openings an opponent makes... they just wouldnt find a way around the shields. Or (which is quite funny to watch) they try a technique I instructed them to do in very special circumstances at the wrong moment and full heartedly slam into a scutum :D good video!

A very important point indeed. Just like when you learn driving a car or typing with 10 fingers; you're becoming really good once your able to focus at the road or the screen instead of being concentrated to how you have to hold the steering wheel or with which finger you have to hit which letter. That's why, as you said, people should first think about the results, and after doing it succesfully, how to improve it.

Great point, Federico. Sometimes my mindset changes in the middle of the bout as well. I start off thinking about too much technique instead of just focusing on what my body wants to do and letting the fight unfold more naturally.

It seems like such a simple thing but definitely isnt. When observing peoples progress it can be very obvious when a person achieves this. Its like a sudden level up. From a practioner perspective its like a beautiful moment of clarity.

Excellent advice, I think this advice can be applied to all HEMA artists, new or not. Focusing on fundementals is good practice for anyone at any skill level.

Great point, I struggled with this for a couple of years after first getting into sparring. My mind would just go blank in the heat of the moment and I would fail to observe *anything* my sparring partner was actually doing. It's a lot better nowadays but I totally get the point you are making here.

Good job as usual 👍 I have been trying to focus more on what my opponent is doing lately, it is very difficult when sparring against a skill fencer. I'm still learning what responses I get from different attacks.
