We've all been there, starting to explore the wide, wide world of texts outside the safety of your textbook, but the first manga you pick up.... is just too hard. You google children's books, and they only take you 10 minutes to read and you don't feel NE smurtr. How do you approach a lifelong habit of foreign language reading? Well, I'mma teach ya that, silly.

As someone that passed N1 10 years ago, I agree with your approach of varying up reading materials and levels. I still switch between manga, novels, social media. I think it's good to sometimes read for total understanding, looking up in a dictionary, others just read through without worrying and getting the gist.

It gets easier over time. In the beginning it took me 2+ hours to read one chapter in Harry Potter. To do list for reading Japanese: 1. Learn Hiragana and Katakana. 2. Memorize the first 2000 words on the Anki Japanese vocab list. ( These will be the 2000 most frequently used words in Japanese. That's about 90% of spoken Japanese. 🙂) 3. Learn the first 400 Kanji in James Hessig's book. ( This will be all of the radicals, fragments, and the most frequently used Kanji. ) Starting with a solid base in this material will make reading much easier. The Manga will have furigana to help you with the readings. Six words a day will get you to 2000 words in a year. You should go much faster than that. One Kanji a day will get you 365 in a year. You should go much faster than that too. It won't happen over night. It will happen if you keep at it.

hey man I never comment but I've been watching your vids for a while, I know the meanings to around 800 kanji but can read next to nothing, would you purely recommend Heisig's remembering the kanji vol 2 to learn readings? feels like I'm at a stand still with kanji!
@ThatsMyChad
@ThatsMyChad 6 жыл бұрын
I actually never used his volume 2. I stopped after 1,500 from meanings, and just by learning vocabulary I was able to connect the dots. So if from learning Japanese you know ねこ is cat, and from Heisig you know 猫 is cat, you can connect that dot without the help of the book. But it requires you read A LOT. And study Japanese pretty hard because you're essentially trying to learn it organically. If you want a more, spoon fed version? Then you can try and find a reading's list like the 日本語総まとめ series for the JLPT. I used that just to solidify my N2 Kanji reading's. But for the most part I've made most of my progress just by connecting dots on my own.

Or too hard / too much vocabulary that you'll barely use?

A popular number thrown about in language learning pedagogy discussions is 70%. That's the minimum amount, it is said, that you should be able to understand if you want to benefit pedagogically from passively consumed media (aural and/or visual). Once you dip below that number, you can still learn things (of course), but your learning efficiency suffers drastically. I wouldn't mind hearing you relate some of the comments you made in this video to that particular piece of conventional wisdom. Surely the mechanical benefits of good reading habits (which you tout as being the primary goal of reading hard text, as opposed to language learning per se) could be gained from a text in which you understand 70% just as much as from a text in which you understand 50%. Right?
@ThatsMyChad
@ThatsMyChad 3 жыл бұрын
I've heard that number, and it's conventional wisdom comes from comprehension of the text, no on the speed of reading. If you read a text that's 70% comprehensible but you know a small number of kanji you're being exposed to sentences with much lower rates of kanji than a text you understand 50% or less. Reading a sentence of mostly kana isn't preparing your brain to read normal Japanese with the regular frequency of kanji, seeing the shape of the sentences and regular patterns you'd encounter. This is often the problem with people moving from textbook Japanese to like, a newspaper for instance. They aren't used to the real forms and the sheer walls of kanji as compared to their tailored experience. It's like saying can you practice swimming in the ocean with tides and waves by using one of those small backyard kiddie pools: you definitely can, but you'd get better much faster by swimming in the actual ocean even though it's much harder.

So basically your saying That the really hard book is to improve your reading speed (And probably speech too) The your level book is a slight challenge that gets you used to learning new words And the easy book is to just practice what you already know/motivational support?

Ebay sometimes has deals, and I've ever found them at those cool indie book stores that also sell records. But finding a specific book or volume can be difficult for a reasonable price.

Currently I'm using an app on android called Kanji Tree and I'm doing it's Grade 1 recognize section. It's basically flash cards, but I want to open a book and try to read...all the books I find though feel too complex. Can you help me find something that I can just get started on?

I will say this, These often are about as easy as you'll get in the real world unless you have something tailored to your level, like a textbook or something. So if this is still too complex, it just might be too early for native materials with the method you're trying. Id suggest finding a tailored reading method where everything builds and stacks like a genki textbook or some other means of organizing the levels chapter by chapter!

@@ThatsMyChad I tried that method of going with "easy children's books" and *hated* reading. I couldn't understand anything, and it was difficult to separate the words. Sure it was easy to *sound out* but actually understanding was damn near impossible, and the actual interest was.... not at all. Children's books are boring. Instead I find stuff with kanji much better. Doing RTK gives rough/vague meanings of kanji, and often times they can combine to make a clear meaning. Such as 子猫 you have 子 meaning child, and 猫 meaning cat. So then you get child cat, or kitten. If you've got furigana you just learned that こねこ or more properly 子猫 means kitten. Whereas in "easy" books you'd see it as これはこねこです。 and not only is it difficult to distinguish that the word there is こねこ you now must also rely on a dictionary to figure out what the word means. これは子猫です。Is *much* easier for me to read than これはこねこです。And once I start learning enough kanji like this, words start being friendly and much easier to read. When I see one I know it's *instantly* recognizable, rather than struggling to figure out where the word boundaries are and then trying to remember the sound and connect it to a meaning. Just my experience. Also: reading kids books isn't my end goal, and are boring af. Since they don't actually help read the stuff I wanna read, why bother with them if it's so much easier to just read the stuff I actually do want to read? If the point is to get kana reading practice, then by all means it's a good way to do it. Though just reading kana everywhere, and perhaps better: old japanese video games like Legend of Zelda, are a lot more fun and can help with kana practice.

@@Legendary_Detective-Wobbuffet I guess it's best to avoid anything that is getting you down that much! I think language, a new language, your native language, whatever is meant to be about connection between people. So if it's not helping that, it's probably not helping anything.

Anyone know if Konosuba LN is worth it for reading practice? (in term of vocab is it too fantasy-ish) i'm planning to buy it after finishing RRTK and Tanggo N5
@babygorl9541

if your vocab and grammar knowledge is only n5 level then konosuba will be way too hard for you. do the core 2.3 anki deck, with sentences and audio (google it and download it) and then try the konosuba LN.

@@babygorl9541 yah, i'm still in the process of learning N5 Deck and grammar after finishing RRTK 1. Then i just realize my reading skill is way too low, I'm probably gonna wait until the next 6 months and maybe starting it from reading VN cuz they have voice acting too.

>first just get a book you can read wow thanks if I could do that I wouldn't be watching this video. Kinda poor advice here. I was hoping for practical tips on how to go from "damn I understand almost none of this" to the point where you're describing "understanding almost all except maybe 5-10 words". The "harder" books are actually easier for me, since kanji can convey meaning sometimes, but the hiragana version of words just leave it as a mess of sounds and unknown words.
