I started daily seiken conditioning over 40 years ago.makiwara,tameshiwari and knuckle push ups.everyone said youll have arthritis by 40.im 57 now and never had any issues whatsoever. Conditioning is essential if you take karate seriously

People also said cracking knuckles gives you arthritis. 😂😂 I'd have osteoporosis by now if that were true.

What techniques would you like to see covered here on this channel?
@joeblogs-vx4ep2 ай бұрын
Sensei John I'd like to see elbow techniques In both a premptive strike and a grappling strike say while grabbing your opponents clothing pulling it towards you (hikite) while delivering a elbow strike to the head ect CHEERS 👍

You talked about all Karate's kicks, you can now talk about Hook punch, uppercut, elbows and knees strike, throws and sweeps

@joeblogs-vx4ep thanks for the idea, I'll see what I can do with that. 👍

I found that the correct biomechanics in combination with a good stance which requires a great balance… The speed on impact… That made me snap a 4c4 inch wood fence post… Or actually four in a row! Oh and of course the thrust from your hips too

I used to do that exercise with the resistance band. I started doing it a few months before my wedding and by the time it came around my lats had gotten so big I barely fit into my tux!

My favorite punch in karate. I just wish more places brought back makiwara practice/conditioning while practicing Gyakuzuki.

Always make sure that you have a target to hit or you can easily tear/dislocate your shoulder with that force from the hips.
@jared07x2 ай бұрын
Been punching hard during kihon hitting nothing for 12 years, hasn't happened yet. Who have you seen this happen to?
@j.wright81572 ай бұрын
@@jared07x Haha...myself. Once, I threw a backfist/reverse punch/ridge hand so hard that it pulled or tore something in my shoulder years ago. I can still feel just a bit of pain up there. Now I'm taking BJJ to put the chokes, throws, holds, and take downs with the punches, blocks, and kicks of Shotokan/Wado Ryu. It's FUN!

OSS Sensei John. I am new in your channel but totally amazed with your videos. I am a 48 years old overweight and 1sk kyu. I am having a hard time to improve my hips movement. Any advice, workout you suggest?.... Thank you again.
@jkgardiner2 ай бұрын
When there is a problem with a technique or movement you need to find out whether it is a mobility problem, a strength problem or a technique problem. For example if the hip movement is limited by mobility this would be the area to address.
@quaxifaddl8928Ай бұрын
Hallo John Can you show how do you do haito uchi? Often I see a movement like a tsuki. But I think that isn't correct. Thanks a lot!

How far does the shoulder go through ? does the arm stop when shoulders become square to target?
@jkgardiner6 күн бұрын
I allow the punching shoulder to come forwards with the hip, only a few inches, don’t overreach.

Question, I’m a brown belt, but now for the exams I have to spar, which I’m good with, but the guy that they want me to spar is a 2nd degree black belt that does competitions. I’ve never done any form of karate sparring. So I’m very new to this. Is that ok for the dojo to have you spar someone with that level of experience?
@jkgardiner2 ай бұрын
It's quite normal to spar with someone of higher experience but they should take that into account and not treat it like a competition. Does your dojo not spar before brown belt at all?
@aceroculturaanahuac86842 ай бұрын
@@jkgardiner No, the dojo doesn’t do any form of sparring or kumite, it’s only at exams. I’ve seen these black belts do kumite at previous exams and they do a-lot of kicking. So when they told me I was next, I told them that I didn’t feel prepared for sparring. Just some advice in how to go about it. Thank you.
