Quick tutorial showing you how to process a recording from your crappy microphone in audacity. Remove Noise, Give your voice a fuller sound, Normalise.
The audio for this video was not edited, as it would effect all of the audio, and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the original recording and the edited one.
The song playing in the background is "Hi Friend (Instrumental)" by Deadmau5

Thanks for the video! Even though I had previously done something very similar, your noise reduction settings (the 1000Hz thing) really made a big difference for me!

A lot of people are saying that they can't hear the difference in the video. I think it must have been my recording software... unless you mean my mic quality during the tutorial, because that was un-edited. Glad I could help you. :)

@utubenotsoku Assuming you mean the waveforms; there are two of them because I was recording in stereo (left and right channels), a mono recording would only record a single track, however I could choose to mix my stereo recording down to a single mono file if I wanted. :)

Thanks! This video was quite helpful. I tend to do my video editing on my Ubuntu OS (Linux) and I wasn't able to find many tutorials showing how to improve microphone quality in Ubuntu. However, since this video uses Audacity, which is cross-platform, I am able to use it in Ubuntu.

Thanks a lot. I don't have a cheap mic, but knowing how to do these things made my good mic sound like (to my ears at least) a high-end professional mic. Very nice tutorial and very easy to understand. I personally couldn't really hear the difference in the video itself, but I sure heard it on my end!

@Those3Horses, also if it helps, you could try to restart your computer (it sometimes helps me) and, or you can uninstall some of the junk you don't necessarily need on your computer which can sometimes improve your computers performance. It helps get rid of lag.

Just a tip: Get a pop filter or a makeshift one. It will prevent your T or S from making a sharp whistling noise, and a P or a B from making a popping noise.
@LycanSentry
@LycanSentry 12 жыл бұрын
@jamieshelley1 If it sounds bassy enough, then don't bother with the bass boost. That's only to help with vocals really, maybe only boost it a little, just until you get the sound you want. The sound removal could still help a lot though. Though I imagine if you're using a lot of gain, it may remove some of that too. :)

@davidmitrevski For this tutorial I used the on-board sound (from my ASUS motherboard) and a headset that I picked up for £1 (which is about $1.50). I've now upgraded to Turtlebeach Earforce x11's and am considering buying a condenser mic. :)

@Those3Horses, have you tried tempo or speed settings in audacity effects? you can slow down your mic that way for audacity. Sometimes it can also be because your computer lagging like mine. When I record, it will play the sound but it sometimes does this weird thing where it sounds like a radio station is kicking in the sound (in a sense) so it could be because of computer lag. It happens.

I have the PS3 Pulse which is a set of headphones with a mic built in. I've done everything you've said in your tutorials on 2 different versions of Audacity. The problem is that when I record my voice, the quality fluctuates between somewhat muffled and clear in a steady pattern. Do you think my mic is the problem here?
@LycanSentry
@LycanSentry 12 жыл бұрын
Just copy and paste (CTRL + C then CTRL + V). You don't actually need to do this to improve the quality, it was just for demonstration purposes. :)

@utubenotsoku I'd start by moving your mic away from your face (assuming it's a headset) also adjust your microphone properties: Right click on the audio icon on the far right of your task bar (opposite your Start Menu) and select Recording Devices. From here you can select your microphone and adjust it's properties, mess around with the levels a bit. On the window titled "Sound" (with all your audio devices) you'll want to get the green bars to go to about 3/4 the way up, but not too far. :)

Don't want to sound like an intruding arse, but here's some other useful tips 1.Being in a small room with padded walls helps to reduce reverb 2.A pop filter can rid of plosive sounds (the pop and crackle you sometimes hear) 3.The closer you are to the mic, the more bass you generate (get too close and it will sound terrible, usually) 4.Shock mounts can lessen noise 5.There's a mic for everyone. Some expensive mics could sound terrible for you, while cheaper one's won't.

Move the mic to the side of your face or speak slightly to the side of your desk mic. The amount of wind you are pushing into your microphone is murdering any improvement you intend to show on this. The tutorial is great, but the simple act of removing the wind from your recording will improve your video 100%!

@sealedfate58 If you're using a PC (I don't really know about Macs) right click on the volume icon on your start menu bar (over to the right), select recording devices. Here you can access and adjust the settings for each of your recording devices (e.g. your headset / mic). Right click on your device and go to properties. Now you can change the levels, boost the volume and add enhancements. :) Hope this helps. :D

Are you sure the mic jack is plugged in fully? Perhaps a tweak of your mic settings is needed. If you're on a PC you can adjust the mic volume in your "Recording Devices" (right click on your volume icon). Select your mic (Most likely "Front Mic") then click properties and mess around with the levels tab. Hope this helps, let me know how it goes. :D

@EmbyCraft I know I was amazed at the audio quality I could achieve, that's why I made this tutorial. I did cut up part of a sponge and stick it on the £1 mic, but I lost it somehow. That helped prevent some "puff". I've a £40 Turtle Beach headset now though. Not because it's better quality, but because I can use it with my PC or Xbox 360, or both at once. :)

@KoolAidtotheMan @jamieshelley1 Granted .mp3 is not the best format to record and edit audio in (as it's mainly designed for uploading or burning to disk) the audio quality (at about 320kbps) is almost unnoticeably different to that of an uncompressed .wav file, however I agree with KoolAid, you should save recordings as .wav's. :) It's also good to keep an original version of the recording (as a .wav) in case you want to edit it differently another time. :D Save .mp3's for upload. :)

Ty for the great video. It helped a lot, but there is one thing. I just downloaded Audacity and some of the options in effects have changed, for example the sensitivity slider in Noise removal. I had to look it up and test a few times to understand better how to set the sliders, it would be extremely good if you could briefly talk about the sliders in the new version..

When it comes to my commentaries I record my audio and video at the same time. The game audio is saved with the video (Recorded with Fraps for PC and my PVR for Xbox games), and I record myself using either Audacity or Pamela (Skype call recording software). Then just drop them into a video editor, add my intro, music, titles etc and export for uploading. :D You can however record audio in your video and then edit it later, but that's another story all together (Not with audio from games).
