I have on several occasions Brian, including interior/exterior shots where I want to extend leading lines. Looking forward to when Adobe increase the 1024 x 1024 pixel size of generative fill, esp for the more sharper foreground areas of images.

That is a Black-bellied Whistling Duck. They are one of the few tree ducks and they do make a whistling sound. I have been photographing wildlife for over 20 years and the only place I have seen them is in Florida.

Thanks for that info, Ron! I was looking all over the wetlands park area for a sign that'd explain the species. There were a few others there, such as herons and egrets, but I didn't see any that included the duck.

There is a fourth, very important, use of generative fill that I haven't seen talked about - and that is recovering blown highlights. Use the "magic wand tool" with a low threshold to select the blown highlight area. Then expand the selection about 3-5 pixels and feather the selection by the same amount. Hit generative fill with no prompts and PShop will generate the blown highlight detail. You can then adjust its transparency for a smooth blend into the surrounding area.

Oh wow! I hadn't considered that use case, but will definitely give it a shot. Thank you for the heads up!

@@brianmatiash You're welcome. It's especially useful for cameras that have limited dynamic range. Works for hair, feathers, etc. And usually the blown area is smaller than the 1024 limitation so you get a high resolution result. Enjoy.

I've used it to finish a wing or tail that just happened to be too close the edge of the frame. It doesn't do too bad and can definitely be an image saver if everything else is what you want.

Exactly right. It's not something I'd want to rely on or use as a crutch to be sloppy in the field. But, I'm glad to know it's available if I really need it.

Hi Brian. I am Competition Secretary of Stroud Camera Club in UK. Much debate is taking place about Generative Fill and the temptation to use it in photographs entered into club competitions. Because it is almost undetectable this is a strong temptation! To do as you are demonstrating here and use generative fill to transform an otherwise unusable wildlife image into something which could possibly be entered into a wildlife/nature competition is a huge temptation but one which could, if discovered, result in the entrant being disqualified from their camera club or at the worst, disqualified and banned from organisations such as FIAP, PSA, PAGB etc., where the rules state that all elements of an image must be created by the photographic process and also must be entirely the work of the author. Personally, I love generative fill and the possibilities it opens up but at the same time it represents a significant headache for Camera Clubs. It would be very helpful if all demonstrators, such as yourself, could strongly make the point that use of generative fill and/or similar products in images submitted into competitions at all levels could result in serious damage to the reputation of the author. National and international competition rules may change in the future but for now, use of this type of content generation within competition entries is forbidden but difficult to detect, meaning we are reliant upon the personal integrity of the author.

Thank you for your comment. While I certainly appreciate your concern about using generative fill on contest submissions, I wouldn't expect content creators to have to provide warnings about it. I am here to provide educational content that utilizes a variety of software tools and technology. The enforcement of contest rules and regulations fall on the organization/person hosting the contest. If an entrant chooses to ignore those rules or isn't aware of them to begin with, then that is on them, as are the consequences of being caught. To that extend, I did bring up my position on using generative fill at the 15:24 mark. That statement more than suffices for getting my point across.

@@brianmatiash hi Brian. I understand and would agree with you totally had you not issued similar warnings about "commercial" applications. As you did, I thought photography competitions deserved a similar mention. In the UK here there are 40,000+ camera club members. Multiply that up by all the other countries out there and you could in fact be doing a terrific service to those of us who have the job of enforcing rules and regulations. Every little helps!

Fair enough and, again, I do see your point. I equate it to me watching a video review of a new vehicle and expecting the reviewer to remind me that speeding can lead to being issued a moving violation if caught. That sort of thing should be implied and inherent to anyone with a modicum of common sense. Now, as to how much common sense the average viewer has... that'd be an entirely different conversation. With all of that said, if mentioning that in subsequent Generative Fill videos can help, then I'll factor it in.

I have used the beta AI Generative Fill occasionally for the last month primarily to remove distractions, which it does brilliantly. Using AI GF will vary from minimal distraction removal up to the extreme, which is more like creating art. Once you add a castle, hippo, or dog, that was not originally in the photograph, I think you are creating art. Nothing wrong with that, but it is no longer a photograph.
@brianmatiash
@brianmatiash Жыл бұрын
Agreed - that's a fair distinction. I'm ok with removing objects because we've been doing that in one form or another for years with the clone stamp and healing brushes. However, compositing an object that wasn't there, to begin with, is a different story. I suppose the grey line is when I extend the canvas to make the composition wider or taller than it originally was. Oh well - it's all good in my book!

Thanks, Jonny! You sum up the benefits quite perfectly. The thing is that I get more than a fair share of emails and comments from people who are either religiously against it and almost take offense that I'd cover such blasphemous tech, or they feel guilty about trying out in the first place because they think it makes them less of a photographer. I don't abide by either school of thought and want to remind viewers that it's really ok to dip your toe in the AI waters and even enjoy it. Glad to have you here, though. More videos are on the docket, I promise.

Totally - there is no need to feel even the slightest bit of guilt over using or, *gasp* , enjoying AI. It's too cool of a technology to ignore because of some suspicion that you'd be seen as less of a photographer. Anyone who'd cast such judgment has no place in my life.

Good point about limited "resolution" and how when it comes to out of focus areas its less noticeable. While there are some workarounds with going section by section for better resolvable details, its still some of hit and miss and takes lot of time. There are some images where you can upscale with Topaz GigaPixal AI or something to compensate a bit, but this still needs work to be usable for larger prints. Also the less advertised aspect of this type of technology is all the problems it has with some type of objects. From fingers, to sometimes perspective, to symmetry etc.
@brianmatiash
@brianmatiash Жыл бұрын
I've experimented with some of those workarounds, like filling in section by section. I admit that I don't have the patience for it, especially when the results for my needs are usually great. I do hope that Adobe increases the max resolution, though. I admit that I don't really use Generative Fill to add new objects as much as to remove distractions or extend the canvas, so things like low-quality fingers, etc. don't affect me much. But, I do see your point.

Great video. I like your commentary about the "morality" issues some people have with this editing. For a while I naively thought these issues were resolved 20plus years ago when PS first came out and to "Photoshop" became a verb. Like you I want to do whatever I can to improve my images and make them look good; I'm not purporting to be a photojournalist or documentarian. I think everyone should develop their own individual standards or "lines" on what they will or will not do. To me it's based on how much time I want to spend and frankly, how much of the image I want to be "completely" mine. For example in your video, I would *not* have used AI to fill in the bill of the black-bellied whistling duck. But I don't judge what you did. It's just my own convention. A few years ago I started using Topaz Sky Replacement to add clouds etc. At first I only used "my clouds" that I had in my files. Some folks had a hissy fit when I told them. Now, FYI, I use Generative fill to fix ugly plain gray skies and I don't care whose clouds they are as long as they look good. I think your comments capture the spirit of having fun and enjoying creating your vision with your images and whatever tools are available vs obsessing on what others think.

Thanks so much for this thoughtful and insightful comment! It may just be a personality thing, but I typically shy away from offering any sort of blanket statement to other photographers indicating what they should or shouldn't do with their photography. I'm not an arbiter who gets to decide what constitutes "real photography," and I've always been excited to experiment with new post processing techniques. My goal with this channel is to share content that I find cool and educations... and that I use with my own photos. Your mature and rational way of evaluating my editing choices is what I wish more photographers adopted. You watched what I had to share and simultaneously appreciated it for what it was while also determining that it's not something you'd do with your photo. You didn't lambast me about it, as if what I did was some form of blasphemous heresy. I wish more photographers would take a page out of your book and remind themselves that it's ok to appreciate an alternative processing technique without feeling like it is a personal slight against their own workflows or preferences. In the end, it's comments like yours that make me appreciate what I get to do, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have this little exchange with you.
@peterusher2020

Extending the duck’s bill saved the photo, BUT, was the complete bill fully representative of the species? Two of the generated alternatives were not interchangeable. One bill was longer than the other and not representative of the species and would be unacceptable for publication in a wildlife journal. The Heron looked a little lost in the image and a tighter crop would have deleted the boathouse without the need for Generative Fill and perhaps provided a better composition. I appreciate you were demonstrating a process and would not necessarily have produced the same composition using conventional photographic editing. Please accept my submission as comment and not as criticism.

I really appreciate the thoughtful comment, Peter, and I am grateful for it. I am far from what you'd consider knowledgeable when it comes to the differences between avian species. I only recently started getting into photographing birds after moving to southern Florida, where I am closely located near several beautiful wetland preserves and conservation areas that are very photographer-friendly. I'm sure that I'll pick up more knowledge as I continue to practice bird photography, and it's good to consider things like bill length from one species to another. As you alluded, my goal was to illustrate ways that Generative Fill can help clean up or even recover a photo should other conventional post-processing methods fail or yield subpar results. Regardless, as I mentioned, I do appreciate your comment.

So wouldn’t it be cool in some down the road version that you could pick your own photo to “train” theAI on? And that photo could have a complete correct beak. PS could use that while applying correct size, perspective, light and shadow.

I see you moving that contextual thing out of the way. Don't you find that annoying? I had to shut that off the first day I saw it. Instead I right-click on the selection to bring up all the options available, or click on the properties panel. I also set a keyboard shortcut to bring up generative fill. Maybe you love it. I don't.
@brianmatiash

It does get annoying, but it also kinda grew on me and doesn't bother me too much because I want to keep the UI as consistent with how a new user would experience launching PS Beta for the first time. That's why I don't customize much of anything. It's more to help viewers than my own personal workflow.
