In the video I say I discovered this by accident, which is true, but I can't really believe I'm the first to discover this knot / hitch. I couldn't find this knot in Ashley's Book of Knots, the authority on knots (great book ... Clifford Ashley is a great writer!), nor is it mentioned on one of my favorite knot tying websites, www.animatedknots.com. I'm sure, if no one discusses this knot in a book, some cavewoman invented this long ago, while the men were out spearing Sid the Sloth. lol!
Anyway ... please leave a message if you've seen this knot somewhere before, or simply if you like the knot. :)))
Cheers!

Bill: Yeah the guy should have practiced more what he wanted to say before making his video and the tutorial itself needed to be better organized with all material and info referred to on hand so the video flowed smoother and quicker making it less cumbersome and easier to follow. His knot is an alternative and ok, but not necessarily better than the taut line which he called stupid.

You have created a new hitch and I applaud you! I put it around my foot and pulled up and it didn't slip at all. However, I noticed two things: After tension, it became hard to adjust; and after tension it became impossible to untie. The difference between a knot or hitch and tying rope together is that a knot or hitch can easily be undone. I think your explanation of how the third wrap doesn't really do anything than hold the pieces together and it doesn't supply tension is actually the beauty of the taut line hitch. Because that third wrap doesn't get under tension, it is easy to untie. For simple situations, it doesn't really matter as it won't be under much stress so it may remain easy to untie. However it has no benefit over the taut line hitch other than the name sounding better for camping. Also, after a windy night, a lot of tension can be put on a taut line hitch and this hitch may be hard to untie after a windy night. I do like knots so I will likely remember this to keep in my bag of tricks.

I find that this arrowhead hitch (and the alternate version by Laura @ Northstar Bushcraft you mention) both have a lot less friction than simply putting three turns in the usual taut line hitch. Test using slippy paracord, put it under tension and discover which works better for yourself..

For those that don't like the taut line hitch or think it doesn't hold well; you can also try the Farrimond Hitch. Holds much better and it's quick release. However this version of the taut line or the diamond head feels really solid and taut (lol).

I played around with this today and discovered that you can make a quick release version by passing a bight through the hole instead of the tag end. With this, you don't have to break the back to get it undone. Give it a try.

Great hitch. I didn't like it at first as it didn't seem to tie well in the paracord I was using. However with just a little more care with the dressing of the knot it worked perfectly. I too was messing around with the traditional taught line hitch and came up with something very similar. I basically make the taught line hitch, but instead of making the cross to make the second knot, I stay on the same side and go under the working end, feed it through just like normal, but then feed it through the inner hitch eyelet. Pretty much the exact same you’re doing here, except I still make the second step of the original and just add the third step of taking the end and going back through the front tensioner(just like the way you end the “arrowhead”).

I use a taut line quite often around the property. With different type of rope, the taut line needs to be dressed perfectly or the line will slip to release tension. I have been adding a third loop prior to the last over and under loop that is used to close out the know. Takes a little extra dressing to remove any slack, but it has not slipped once. I most often use them on shade tarps which are under constant stress. It adds a lot of extra friction but can still be slid to tack up or give slack.

I have been tying knots in the outdoors four quite sometime now. I use a modified truckers hitch for my ridgeline, as I can guarantee the tightest possible ridgeline using this method. I have been using either the taught line or the adjustable grip hitch for my guidelines. I tried this knot a few times, I'll be honest, I wasn't sure i liked. So I decided to test it practically. Let's see if it lives up to the hype! I put up my MallowMe XL double nest hammock, and my Profly XL hammock rain tarp in a thunderstorm. I have to say I was surprised with how well the knot held. I Mark the Paracord with a black marker and did not notice any movement in the line whatsoever even in strong winds and rain.

Thx comment, Michael... that's been my experience. No slippage. I did find the wet knot that was blown around harder to untie than the tautline, but it wasn't terrible (using paracord). Did you have any untying issues?
@NinjaHempKnight

The knot was tight, but I tied a slippery arrowhead and it came untied with a pull of the tag end ☺. Some people worry about a slippery hitch coming untied. I place a small piece of stick in the loop and pull the slip part taught against that. Works perfect!!

Apple blade - Submitted for your consideration: the Tarbuck knot. It has that figure eight twist, for increased friction on the lock, like your knot but it maintains the linear design of the Tautline that allows it to be easily undone when it's time to move on. When the situation warrants more friction the Tautline and the Tarbuck can be tied with three friction turns.
@Appleblade
@Appleblade 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks ScorpionRegeent ... Tarbuck appears to be that second (I think better) version of the Tautline (where you make your final loop toward yourself and the loops line up neatly... see 3:38) and the substantial difference is you add an extra turn so you get the friction increase just like the arrowhead hitch. And you are right about the Tarbuck untying more easily. Fairing the knot is a little more fussy (for me anyway), but the untying ease might make it a winner over my knot here. Good find!
@ScorpionRegent
@ScorpionRegent 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah the Tarbuck is a climber's knot, they can't afford to make mistakes. I use it when I want a solid hold, such as rigging a load for transport. The Tautline is for when I am just doing something casual like clothes line. Of course there is the third option I like to use: Prusssiks, but that's another story. Thanks for the video.

I like how it looks and philosophically agree that we should have new knots, even if the fact that the tautline hitch came from sailing is irrelevant to whether it's a good knot. But I tried this in some ~5mm polyester rope. Unless I was really careful in how I dressed it, I found it slipping on me. Not sure I'd trust it in all rope types and the worry is that if the knot loosens up between uses, it could fail to hold when loaded the next time. So it's worth checking out out a bit for whatever rope you're using and your expected use case. For something permanent like this, I really like Blake's Hitch (which was of course discovered earlier by a man named Prohaska who gets zero credit). Anyway, it looks good and it holds brilliantly, so it's worth checking out as well.

I was playing around with it and have discovered that if tied very tightly,and slipped that it serves very well as a tautline hitch very well as to be equal to our arrowhead.itied around a fairly large tree,and the 2 sides of the loop spread apart,making it stronger,but still adjustable with greater effort.But not even half as beautiful or as elegant as Your Scouting knot, the Arrowhead Tautline Hitch,which you discovered ! Cool! I revisited this one as I was working on a adjustable length dog leash. I then wanted something a bit more uniform looking for decretive sake. I make the arrowhead, then brought the working end up and over like the second variation of the rolling hitch and then back down the centre of the arrowhead and the working end finished at the center of the two portions making the loop/bite (still rusty on terms). So, it’s a tidied up version where the finished end is in line.

I use the second variation of the tautline hitch that you showed, ABOK #1857. It works awesome with the 1.7 mm Dyneema-core line that I use. It doesn't come undone accidently, and it's easy to untie. If you are working with slippery line, you can always add extra wraps to any of these kinds of these sliding hitches. I will try your "Arrowhead Hitch" later. Some of the comments indicate that it will be very hard to untie after it has been loaded. The people that make rude comments almost always have zero of their own videos.

I very much appreciated the effort you took in solving the slippage issue with the traditional taut line hitch. Your knot DOES provide better tension. But I have to agree with those that posted / pointed out that just adding one additional wrap to the taut line hitch appears to provide the same improvement in tension, and possibly in a neater package. I can’t say which would be stronger - I couldn’t cause any slippage in either improved knots by stepping into the loop and pulling, whereas the 2-wrap TLH easily slipped. Have you attempted this comparison?

A reasonable consideration. For the consideration of your audience: The purpose of the original and IMO superior rolling hitch is that it does not bind on itself making it difficult to release following being under more tension than your table top example. Nice well presented video 👍
@zecuse

This is incredibly similar to the adjustable grip hitch. Instead of switching directions for that 3rd wrap going around both lines of the loop and tucking into the hole, the adjustable grip hitch continues wrapping in the same direction around both lines of the loop and tucks under the last wrap like the taut-line. I like this better than both of those though because the working end is parallel with the standing end whereas the other 2 leave it perpendicular!
@WarER4X
@WarER4X 6 жыл бұрын
I gave this "arrowhead hitch" a try, but I found that, in order for it to work well, it's very dependent on the "tidiness" of that last step. Then once it is working, it tends to over-tight and have to be loosened up to be able to slide again. Also, I find that, because it is so dependent on those last loops being stacked close together, it doesn't work very will for stiffer, larger diameter ropes. Alternatively, the taut line hitch works for me every time, regardless of the rope/cord being used, never over-tightens and never needs to be re-loosened to be slide further, even while it is still under tension. I'm sorry, but this arrowhead hitch doesn't hold a candle to the good ol' taut line. I would say that, maybe one use for the arrowhead hitch would be to have a somewhat taut-line-like behavior that doesn't untie on its own when there is no tention (which the taut line will do, sometimes).
@Appleblade
@Appleblade 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, Shawn. I don't quite understand the knot logic of 'b/c it's dependent on the last loops being stacked close together, it doesn't work well with stiff, larger diameter rope'. I think I've only used it with 3 types of cordage (paracord, 3/8" polypropylene, and some cotton string ... where it overtightened a lot in the wind and rain ... if I was smart, I'd have tied a few classic taut lines to compare). Anyway, thanks for the insights and I'll look for the results you mention. Cheers!

@caseygraham5738
@caseygraham5738 4 жыл бұрын
You're almost right I think. I'm very certain this has a slight variation at the end. The difference is the ADJUSTABLE GRIP HITCH (AGH) final hitch ends up going OVER the original working end of the first (large) main loop end, this "Arrowhead" knot goes under (into the rabbit hole as my dad used to say). My guess is that the final working end getting tucked into the hole locks it in more tightly against the original first two half hitches and the original (large) looped working end. This would probably make it tougher to untie.

8:08 In this knot, instead of going on and through the last loop, I go from under and through, then there is no space between the loops. It is the Taut line Hitche were the loop at the botom has been moved to the top... Thank you for your very strong knot.

That is the adjustable grip hitch. However if it get's over tightened it will not be able to be untied. Put a bite in the knot and it will work better. I use this knot a lot when snow and severe weather camping.

Cool little knot. Appleblade that "extra square space" when you were asking the question of, "Why doesn't someone use that other space?" . Well, there are a lot of variations on a theme that revolve around the know you invented which is cool, but there's another one Paul Kirtley renowned bushcraft instructor uses, which is again basically another variation on the same theme with potential advantages and disadvantages, however it is closer to what you're showing here! Apparently, this known as the adjustable guyline hitch, but he uses a bite there in that "other space towards the stake or square area" for easy release untying. I agree that it is better to use that other space in the square area versus down the line like the taut hitch does. As a matter of fact, I've NEVER used the taut hitch and didn't knot it existed up until recently. That might sound pathetic, but I've always just used the one Paul shows for my outdoor exploits I.E. the guyline hitch when I need and adjustable tension hitch like this. I guess so long as it gets to job done who cares right? This is at least closer to the know you invented using that space. Your knot looks more secure, but the other knot uses a bite in that square area which I love because it is easy quick release to untie! See the video below: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/op96nZR3v6m0cqM.html

You wrote this 6mo ago? I just now found it! lol! ... thanks for the comment and the link. Yep, the quick release with the bite always appreciated when you're tearing down and want to get on the road. ;)))

I've been using this (Thank you!) with a quick release at the end. But I don't camp in really harsh conditions. Just some high wind gusts. Has anyone else been using it with a quick release, under harsh conditions? How did it hold up?

Tried all three before commenting. The traditional taut line hitch at 1:18 is the best. It holds the most tension and is easy to release. His "Arrowhead" is the worst. It doesn't hold much tension, and the knot is much harder to untie.

Use taut-line a bunch. Think I am gonna try this. Recently, I have been playing around with the taut with a smaller cordage looped through it as a pull tab yo adjust. I will see of there’s a way to do the same with the arrowhead.

I think that when you go down through the hole, you could maybe put a loop in the end so that it could be easily removed? Then, people would have less to complain about? Some people's kids! Great video!

I always have a problem with tautline hitch. In certain weather, perhaps due to expansion and contraction of the cords, the tying comes loose fairly easily. Hope your variation will do a better job. Thank you.

Hi! I tried this knot and in my experience it actually didn't work as well as the Taunt Line Hitch because, when finishing your knot, the loose end that you insert next to the first loop of the taunt line hitch kind of loosens this loop and that tends to reduce friction. Thanks for documenting this knot and giving explanations about the taunt line hitch though. :)

I'm sure I'm a knot geek. That said, what a great knot. Huge improvement. I'll be using it in a week to tension everything in sight. At the end it's like a sheet bend, isn't it?
