Painting the inside of the bucket white helps tremendously in getting brighter illumination. I do not like LEDs as they tend to only shine in one direction not 360* like the incandescent does. 360* light and a white housing makes for a brighter lens than a hot spot from a bright LED bulb in dull bucket, just my 2 cents. Try on a spare housing and compare, I bet you will agree. Love the channel and I wear my " I am the warranty" shirt with pride.

It's also a good use for the 3/4 full can of chrome spray paint everyone has on the shelf because although shiny looks nothing like chrome.

I think if you use a flasher unit made for LED you don't need the resistors. Don't forget to also convert the Signal Stat 900 bulb to LED. There's 2w LED pinball machine bulbs that fit. Big advantage to going all LED is you can set the generator third brush to 5-6 Amps and never have to touch it again.

Hi Paul! LOVE videos about maintenance on the Model A! With such small taillights, you need all the brightness you can get these days! Not only do people drive stupidly fast, they are also watching whatever screens they have in their car, instead of where they are going! Anything that can get their attention is GOOD! Do you have any plans to put some kind of third brake light on the coupe? Something that would be removable for any shows would be cool. But, again, maybe I am giving folks too much credit for them paying attention while driving. . .

No plan for a third (or fourth or fifth) brake light. No shows for this car either. It has a one-way tour in its future.

Depending on what the tea cup is made out of, sometimes you can polish the inside to a near mirror finish then shoot it with clear coat to prevent rusting to improve the brightness of a tail light. Is a little bit of work, but that’s what I did on my 1965 Ford F-100 that had a tail light housing that bolted on to the side of the step side bed just like the old 34 Ford’s and model T’s had.

Great addition for those who drive their Model A's in congested urban areas. I not only added a third brake light but also installed a flasher in the circuit that flashes the third brake light for 5 seconds as a warning before it turns full on.

…as opposed to changing the taillight in a modern car, where you first go on the internet to even figure out how, then break off all the plastic tabs that hold it, stop by the bank for the loan you’ll need to buy everything, then pray the parts store actually has them. A friend had a car that even required the removal of the front tire and inner fender to change the headlight! What was so wrong with just a couple of SCREWS?

RIGHT!!! I had to remove inner fender wells on Model T's Jeep to change the turn signal bulbs. Crazy.

So true…I fancy myself at being a competent mechanic…but darn if I didn’t need the internet to figure out how to replace a bulb on a 2000 Ford Focus rear bulb. Even worse was my attempt to change a dash bulb on a 2006 Toyota Corolla…after disassembling the dash, I found there are no bulbs…you have to buy a whole new circuitboard for $400. There is a lot to be said for the practical design of a Model A. Lots of them still running after almost a century…I doubt the same can be said for almost any car built after 1980!

You can also get LED-compatible flashers that don't require resistors and let you use the much brighter and more reliable LEDs. Regardless, I would get bulbs that are colored the same as the lenses. Using clear white bulbs with colored lenses is not optimal for a lot of reasons, and that's especially true for LEDs.

Thanks Paul! Now I have to go look at my tail lights and figure out what kind of bulbs I have. My turn signals are separate so far. I've got LED turn signals from Logo Lites. When I put on a new wiring harness I'll get the turn signal option.

Hi Paul, thanks for all the knowledge you share. For some reason my driver's side brake light works on the flasher bulb also, despite them being separately, and correctly wired. Could this be a poor ground? Thanks

Jim is so helpful.. If it is only a little, loosen the bolts that hold the two brackets that the rack bolts to and tweak them the right way, tighten. If that isn't enough, you've got something bent, and you'll need to get gorilla with it. Put a jack under the low side and jack it up a little past where you want it to go and jump on the side of the car a few times.

a lot of those electronic flashers have a current draw limit (ie make for led bulbs). That is most likely why they are burning out

You do get a electronic flasher unit that is not dependent on the load, and those are not expensive... Memotronics ELF33-6 Turn Signal Flasher Relay, LED Compatible, 3 + Ground Wire Prongs, 6 Volts

So they do make a flasher for LED but seeing you have had two electronic flashers go bad, probably will have the same luck with those..... But what if you just added a resistor right after the flasher in the harness for the load? Only need one resistor instead of one at each lamp. Or add a resistor on a wire and add leads to to the flasher so it has two wires, one regular and one with a resistor to plug in then just Velcro the flasher to now flop around?

When all else fails hit it. 🤣Good job getting things working and a good upgrade from stock. Not sure about the Model A's but they do make a unit to use LEDs in newer cars so they flash at the right speed. Maybe it could be adapted to work with the Model A and then you could have all LED lights but may need to be 12V, not 6V systems if that is what you are using.

@@ModelA You are better off with the old-style flasher unit. The electronic units are very sensitive to different amperage draws and I believe you can not mix incandescent bulbs with LED units so it's all LED or none.

Bert’s seemed to only have led which is what I have and they won’t blink. I went ahead and ordered the flasher module you recommended because the electronic flasher blew immediately. I found the bulbs at a place in NC in bulk for a great deal.

I've had great success using thr electronic flashers and LED bulbs. Granted, your e flasher died as they are less reliable than the standard heat strip flashers. The heat strip flashers require resistors and such. Electric should've been fine with led lamps...I just prefer the look of incandescent 😅
