After our last couple of casting videos, I've had a lot of requests for a video on the parallel kick cast. In this video I share the reasons why I use the parallel kick cast and how to execute it.
When you're done watching the video, please head on over to our store at www.tacticalflyfisher.com. We'd love it if you'd support our channel by shopping with us.

Well...I'm fairly new to both fly fishing in general (this summer being my 5th year), and esn in particular (since last December)...but I've been fishing my whole life over 5 decades. There are a handful of individuals in each genre of fishing that not only have a passion for their sport, but have cultivated an attention to detail that separates the good fishermen from the great ones...and clearly you are one of them. I, like thousands of others new to this sport, spend countless hours combing the available resources for knowledge and insight to help them learn how to become better at their endeavor. There is an almost overwhelming amount of info available, and it can be difficult to wean out the noise from the relevant material. I'm glad I found your channel.

Man Devin, I wish one of these days I'm nonchalant as you when I bring in a toad like that. Nice video, can't wait to focus more on trying that.

That makes a lot more sense to me know. Both on the objective and how to. That angle was very helpful.

Wow! Really well done. It is so much nicer to be able to see the cast and kick. I’ve been struggling with pocket water but I’m confident this will help with the fish take.

Great info Devin. I really do enjoy. I use it the cast a lot due to how tight some of the water I fish is. Let’s me put my flies where I want it.

Thanks Devin! Can you confirm/clarify: 1) kick occurs during forward cast and 2) where are the flies traveling when you kick - are they extended all the way behind you, alongside you, in front of you, etc. Not sure at what point of the forward stroke to kick.

Peter Cacioppo they have begun to turn over. I’d say they they are even or just in front of me when I make the motion.

Exactly the same doubts. I have bought the videos, and in the second of them I have stayed the same as I was at the beginning. And the saddest thing is that I am still similar to the way I was before this new youtube video. I have the same doubts as, for example, Peter Cacioppo or Pablo Sebastián, both below. And I say, is it so difficult to make a sketch, where the mechanics of that cast are explained briefly and quickly? Thank you.

Any chance of using a rig where the line and/or leader are visible on future videos for demonstration purposes only?

Thanks, seeing the video is better than trying to read the photos in your book. Does this make the flies curl inward also? In other words, does it have sort of the same effect as a tuck cast but in a 90 degree change of plane, where you get the flies to tuck in toward you so they're shooting upstream in a parallel direction while being off to your right? If that makes sense....
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 4 жыл бұрын
spikeconley the rod is still rotating over the top in an oval so they shouldn’t curve laterally unless you’ve made a flat sidearm cast.

Can you explain the difference between the parallel kick cast and helicopter cast. It seems like both continue the oval cast a quarter turn to get the flies further out and in line with the current. are you extending the cast by continuing the cast from the high part of the O down to where your rod is perpendicular to the flow? Thanks
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 4 жыл бұрын
The difference is in the path of the casting arc. The oval of the parrallel kick cast is more or less vertical. The rod stays out to your side and the rod tip never travels up and over your head. This path is better for casting quartering upstream. The helicopter cast follows a much more horizontal path through the air and the rod goes over and behind your head during the stroke. This path makes the cast better for getting under trees and casting more across the river and less upstream.

Devin, is the "kick" a readjustment of the rod tip after the forward cast or is a "flick" after the forward cast?
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 4 жыл бұрын
Pablo Sebastian I don’t really know how to explain it other than how I do in the video. If you watch I extend my arm on the final forward cast after the flies have started to turn over.

@@piebald80 It is the same concept as a "reach cast" which Devin notes in his video. Check out the Orvis video on doing the reach cast and it may clear things up for you (i.e. the reach cast is the more basic cast that the parallel tuck cast is based on).
@piebald80
@piebald80 4 жыл бұрын
@@jacobbeers1136 Thnx! If it's just a reach cast than that really simplifies things for me. I appreciate the help!
@jorgemerino4709
@jorgemerino4709 4 жыл бұрын
@@jacobbeers1136 That's right, correct !!! Nothing new with the Parallel Kick Cast. It is much easier if they told that it is similar to a Parallel Reach Cast instead of a Reach Cast crossing the stream perpendicularly. Thank you. Your explanation is very correct.

Devin, why did you think (correctly, of course) that there would be a fish at that specific spot at 1:10?
@badgebffr

prob because its a seam between those changing currents, fish hold at the edges where it's easier for them to feed
