To wrap up these two test videos I measure distortion and provide commentary about each ribbon against one another. I was quite surprised myself :D Stick around for a test build with both of these ribbons to make the final determination.

I just discovered your channel.. Very informative! Any chance you’d design and build a fairly efficient 2-way floorstander with the Viawave? Something with a benign impedance curve that can be used with high output impedance amps (tubes?) BTW, what do you think of the hornloaded Viawave models? Thanks....

Impulse Audio Thanks! Yeah, high efficiency usually connotes pro or boutique drivers.. Have you ever tried Audax pro drivers? I dunno how they would sound but I liked their cloth domed tweeter I used before. At Madisound they have a 5” paper wideband and a 10” paper woofer in their pro series for a 3-way that seem quite linear for mid and midbass duties for an efficient Viawave project.

Great. I got the point of your review here. Iv been looking for a pair of smooth running super tweeter as a top up to my two way JBL 4320 ()which stops at 15k Hz quite sharply and above) to form a 3 way system, and maybe test out adding my vintage Jensen P8P squawkerz in conjunction for a 4 way. I would like to run that super tweet above them from my active xover system, possibly at 800, and 15k for the JBL in a 3 way system, or 800, 3k and 8k Hz with the P8P and the super tweets. My choice would be the Foundtek with money considered. What do u think? S

ken cohagen it’s a guy named Roman who imports them from Russia. He is listed on the viawave website. I just used an Lpad to bring the level down. Was something like 6ohm series 5ohm parallel if I remember right. The impedance of this tweeter is really flat so it’s easy to just adjust the resistor values until you get it where it sounds balanced. And if you use an active dsp XO like a mini dsp you would change adjust the level in the software.

Welp, this excludes the Fountek from my search. I need to cross at no higher than 2500hz in a 3-way design with SEAS Excel 6" mid-woofers, but these do not seem to perform well at 2500hz. What are your thoughts on Aurum Cantus G3's crossed at 2500hz mated to that woofer?
@ImpulseAudioSpeakers
@ImpulseAudioSpeakers 4 жыл бұрын
DjKinetec most ribbons aren’t happy crossing low, especially small ribbons. The Fountek in this video isn’t that big. The AC G3 is quite large and can probably handle 2500 without too much concern, But I don’t have first hand experience with it. Note that a large ribbon has other drawbacks. The Viawave is really good because it can handle a pretty low XO and remains short.

Jennifer WhiteWolf not below freezing (doesn’t get that cold here very often) and I usually wait for a warmer day even if I do the talking on a different colder day. Besides, when it does get cold I store the drivers indoors and bring them out just for the test so they’re warm for the test. Speed of sound is slightly higher in the cold otherwise there is not much difference. Seems like everyone’s comments lately are trying to pick apart my methods. I know what I’m doing even if I can’t give every detail in a 10min video. Why am I doing this again? It’s certainly not for the $10 google pays me. The RAAL 140-15d is capable of pretty good flat response to near 50 KHz. To go higher you are no longer looking at high fidelity drivers.. there are special UHF transducers made for scientific research but the generally have limited energy capabilities, limited bandwidth, and dispersion issues... not for music reproduction, not even for hyper harmonics in wide band DSD recordings.

analogaudio rules if you want the viawave the North American distributor is a guy named Roman. I think his contact info is on that website. The NeoX3.0 is not as good as the viawave in my opinion. Think about it. Your speaker doesn't just aim sound directly to your ears. Some of it is reflected off side walls etc. If a speaker was only designed for flat direct sound, you would find it to be exceptionally bright and tipped up in overall balance in room. As was mentioned here, it is the power response that is more important which takes into account the reflected sound as well as the direct (total acoustic output) to produce a flattish response.
@rts100x5
@rts100x5 5 жыл бұрын
@@carlosoliveira-rc2xt one of the main reasons that planar speaker design is superior IS that the pressure wave that is uniform or "flat" as it were which decreases room acoustic anomalies ... people have been so used to dealing with the inherent problems of cone shaped drivers - that they just got used to the less than controlled dispersion.... interaction with room properties should be dealt with at the speaker level more than the hardware level ....
@carlosoliveira-rc2xt
@carlosoliveira-rc2xt 5 жыл бұрын
@@rts100x5 The planar speaker has less dispersion to the sides so interacts less with side walls. A wide dispersion speaker should not be considered inferior as it mimics real life. Flat planar speakers have as many weaknesses as they have strengths. While room correction devices can be beneficial, especially in the bass range, I have yet to hear one that is totally transparent in the midrange. Of course this would depend on the resolution of he rest of the system. The speaker is the final link in the reproduction chain and if you think about it your room correction is actually upstream of the speaker even though it is taking it's input after the speaker. Wide dispersion with even power response is the way to go in designing a speaker. It has been shown to be the case and is not an opinion.

Efficiency is acoustic output pr electric input power. The Viawave sits higher in the reading because it's some 4 ohm's . Try presenting the same amount of wattage (power)to both speakers ( after measuring their actual nominal/average impedance,- a pocket calculator will help finding the right voltages for this test. Please !

William Kvist Poulsen I provide the impedance plots. Can’t remember (have to watch my own video to remember) but I believe the viawave was still more efficient. 4ohm is a 3db advantage over 8ohm (consumes double the power). In any case it’s definitely more sensitive.

You give total emphasis to complex crossovers to force a flat freq/spl response, but measuring the output of any speaker at a given frequency tells you NOTHING about what that speaker sounds like at that frequency. Some of the best sounding speakers in the world have a ragged uneven freq/spl graph line. Dump your computer testing and start using your ears !

carlos oliveira percent is a ratio. Efficiency is the ratio of sound power out for electrical power in. I stated that ratio in decibels instead of percent in this video (dB/watt). They mean the same thing except everyone understands it better as dB/w@1m. More than that most people refer to sensitivity the most (expressed as dB@2.83V@1m). Stating driver efficiency as a 2.138% vs 2.146% would be very cumbersome. Nobody does that. Those are made up numbers by the way. But if you don’t find me not credible that’s ok too.
