I made this tutorial for my fans who were asking for a guide on how to convert their old childhood tapes and here it is! You don't need any expensive software, you only need old hardware that still works and a converter that is readable by your computer.
In this guide, I will help you understand the fundamentals on converting old tapes. Do let me know if you need any help and I will answer them in the comments section below.
Why you should convert your tapes now

Thank you for this amazing video! From start (re. cables and what each is for) to finish, it was SO helpful. The only problem I had was with the studio view, but once I googled that I was good to go. I had great results grabbing old home Hi8 videos (btw 640x480 was the best resolution for me). Thank you thank you thank you for a fantastic, SUCCINCT tutorial!!! JUST ENOUGH and NOT TOO MUCH! Great clip!!!! I bought the USB2.0 VHS converter online for about $10 . The software Honestech that came with it, is bad. The voice is not synchronized to the video when converted. While the sound may only be in mono you can get an audio splitter to send it to both sides. I do this on my NES to my Crt. It makes the sound come out of both sides even though the nes has only one audio jack. It would not be true stereo but during playback, if watching with headphones you would hear the audio in both ears.

Find yourself a Sony Digital8 cam that outputs through the DV port via FireWire, those old Sony camcorder takes old analog tapes and converts it to digital and even has a time base corrector to deal with distortions and jittering. The cheap $10 dongle and Elegato tend to suffer from jittering/distorted images probably since they don't have a built in TBC. I didn't realize how crappy the Elegato capture was until I used the Digital8. Also for post processing use QTGMC deinterlace and your home videos will look amazing in digital playback.

Hi! Good tutorial man! I'm getting an issue that hopefully you can solve. OBS is recording fine, however, audio is quite too low and noisy. If I increment the dBs, obviously the noise is powered. Do you have any idea what it could be? Cables, VHS reproducer? Inherent to the recordings? When I record Hi8 with my camera that noise is pretty low in comparison with the VHS :( Do you apply any processing to the audio signal when recording?

Once you convert a VHS cassette to digital there can be lots of dead tape space that got converted. Those segments of converted video can be hard to find and not needed. PyVHS is a Python package that removes those unused tape spaces. PyPi and GitHub is where PyVHS is located. Say you converted a lot of videos and do not want to manually edit them then they can automatically be removed while you do something else.

On my Sony TV which has 3 phono typical socket: yellow for composite video and both red and white sockets, for audio. Now it does matter which socket you use for audio as if you put a mono phono (often black on older cameras) in the red phono socket you just get audio from the right channel (and while mono it still sounds odd as in unbalanced and TV needs to be made louder as only one side speaker working) but if you put a mono audio signal in the white (left) phono socket on the TV you will get audio from both speakers all be it in mono but it will sound far better and louder then just an unbalanced mono from one speaker on one side of the TV.

@@catherinek7901 I ended up getting a "digitnow!" external video capture device for £99 in Amazon. It feels cheaply made but it worked well, recorded onto micro SD card. However there is another one called "tangxi" which is £77.49 atm on Amazon. Think this might be the one I wanted but it was unavailable at the time. Also recommend getting gold plated RCA cables as this apparently will help contain the buzzing sounds. Should be about £10. Also my RCA cables had the wrong colours on them and this caused more noise so check if the video is actually coming through the yellow video wire. The additional noise came when my video RCA wire was plugged into an audio RCA output. There is still a very low electrical hum sound under the audio but not really noticeable and not sure if that's just there anyway. Best of luck with it!

It can be several factors, 1. Cables are faulty 2. The output of the camcorder is not doing too well 3. The input of your capture device may have an issue
@vncgrln27

@@imraphraph it seems like the capture device is not good? I replaced the items twice, I managed to record 2 tapes of 2hrs each that are good quality and colored then suddenly the color became yellowish green to black and white. I tried playing the videocam on tv and the color is good so i think the problem is not with the cable and video cam? I purchased the EasyCap brand, do you have recommended brand for the usb capture device?

@@vncgrln27 funnily enough I have only used the cheaper easy cap ones, The easycap ones are actually whitelabelled converters. I would presume the better ones being elgato and a few others.

Hi Raphael! I am trying to convert my family VHS tapes into digital, got the same converter, but I have a weird issue where in OBS I can play the audio, but the video only reproduces the "menu" (like if I change channels in the VHS I can see it, also when I play the video I can see the play icon on screen), but as soon as the video should start, it just goes to blue screen (and the audio starts). I hope you can help :( don´t know if it´s a setting in obs or an error in the driver

I had that issue then I switched to a gold plated cable, the noises were gone! Try that! Its because your copper cable is probably picking up electrical interference either from other devices nearby or itself.

Hi. So what you need is a white cable from the rca cable. component, (red green and blue) dose not carry a sound signal. So use the green cable from the component and the white audio cable from the rca. If this wasn’t clear please reply back.

Hey thanks for the tutorial! But every time I try to record the audio comes out very loud and noisy and the video has these green lines that flash on and off the screen. Do you think this is an issue with the RCA cable or USB converter quality?
@imraphraph
@imraphraph Жыл бұрын
It could be the cable, or the USB converter. As for the audio you can set the recording level for the audio to be lower so it does not peak. Have you tried the gold plated cables, it makes quite a difference.

Hello! When I am capturing vhs footage straight from my camcorder whether it be on OBS or QuickTime Video Player the audio keeps on skipping and there is an annoying glitchy static sound that comes through. I use one of those Video DVR Capture tools yet I only use the white and yellow ports because those are the only ports that my camcorder has. It does not have the red port for the right audio channel i believe. Could you help me please?
@imraphraph

It does not matter because that means that the audio only has one port out. Just connect the yellow to yellow and the white to white. It will still send the signal over.

The method should be the same, in which if you can get the mini USB to USB and plug it into the computer, it should read as a recording device on your capture program. But then again I have not personally used a video camera that only has a USB port for video out.
