In the year 10191, humans have unfolded many secrets of the universe and now travel from planet to planet. Different planets have turned into different nations and are governed by a single Emperor. The planets have “houses” with their respective dukes who in turn follow the orders of the emperor. One of such planets is the planet of Arrakis. It is a harsh desert planet that is the only source of a rare substance called "spice".

Why do they use bladed weapons: So first of all they do use guns, missiles, lasers, all that stuff in the Dune Universe. It's just that after thousands of years of their use counter strategies have emerged to limit their effectiveness. Like the way Prey and Predators compete with evolutionary adaptions. Laser guns are called "Lasguns" - and they are commonly used. However, if a lasgun beam interacts with even a small personal shield this results in a large Pseudo Nuclear explosion, so they have to be very careful and selective of targets. Projectile hand weapons are often referred to as "Maula Pistols" - they often fire darts that are more effective at penetrating shields, but they have heavy duty cannons and guns as well. Shields are almost completely effective at repelling fast powerful projectiles or explosives however - but not everyone has shielding all the time. Also keep in mind, all sophisticated computers are banned so this limits what they can do with the tech.

Dune fanboy here. It's not set in 10191 AD, it's 10191 AG (after guild). About 10,000 years before Dune starts, there was a huge war between men and AI (or thinking machines) which humans win. They make a law to "not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind" so AI, Robots, even calculators are all outlawed in this universe. Depending on which source you use, it's set somwhere between 30,000-50,000 in the future. They aren't testing Paul if he is the "messiah of Arakkis", they are testing to see if he is, essentially, the "Messiah". The bene gesserit have planted myths on many worlds, Arakkis is just one. And lastly, the Ecologist isn't going to take a thopter, she wa calling a worm to ride (there's one scene with her holding the hooks for this just before the Sardukar kill her). Sorry, I had to.
@YSFmemories
@YSFmemories Жыл бұрын
none of this makes any sense to me. how do you have spaceships if they can't even calculate. Why are the people planting fake myths waiting for something they literally invented. Why would they give up on making the planet a paradise if it really was that valuable? Like, literally makes no sense at all. Why would they not just kill all the giant sandworms instead of letting them destroy stuff? So many illogical things in this civilization

They had computers that could navigate, but in the past computers became sentient and basically went "Skynet" on them, and humans managed to survive waging the Butlerian Jihad against intelligent machines. Spice was found as a way to make selected humans act as navigators, so they didn't need computers to navigate. Advanced AI is NOT allowed in the galaxy. Its also the reason why they have "Mentats" - the guys who are like human computers. They showed one in the movie doing some calculations.

Small correction: the Bene Gesserit are not trying to create a "Messiah of Arrakis", nor is "the One" supposed to save Arrakis from exploitation. The Bene Gesserit could care less how Arrakis is treated as long as society is stable and the spice continues to flow. They want to create the Kwisatz Haderach because they believe that he can prevent the collapse of human society and can find a path for humanity that will endure.

This movie was a big and positive surprise. In a time when seemingly all movies are all about flashy explosions and fast paced action, this movie keeps the relatively slow tone of the books and makes it work. While also managing to keep true to the books where it matters most. (Though, it doesn't change anything, it still was odd to see Liet as female. There's no reason for this character to be male, not even in the books, so this change is purely cosmetic, it still was this "huh, why?" moment.) One thing, but that's not exclusive to this movie adaption, I dislike the reason they give for why the Emperor wants to kill of House Atreides. Yes, the "power-grabbing" reason seems good enough, but the book reason is so much better as it describes the fear of loss of power that House Corrino suffers from a lot better. Especially as it also puts importance on the fact that the Emperor actually very much likes the Duke Leto Atreides. What that reason is? Sardaukar. Leto dared to train some of his soldiers to be at least as deadly as the Imperial Sardaukar and thus threatening the very foundation of House Corrinos power.

Why EXACTLY the spice so important: Imagine you have a boat, and you want to go from one island to the next one. You have a boat, fueled up and ready to go, but there is one thing you still need - a pilot / navigator. Okay, so a fast boat is more difficult to pilot than a slow boat - makes sense?. Now lets imagine the boat is going so fast it's bending the fabric of space time! Just imagine how difficult that would be to pilot!. So - you might think - use a computer to plot the course and pilot the boat BUT ( it's a big but) in Dune computers of that level of sophistication are banned by religious scripture and law. Thinking machines are equivalent to our idea of Satan so thats a no goer. So a human has to do it - how do you get a human to get to a level of awareness that they can navigate a ship that goes so fast it's bending space time ( without getting lost or crashing into a planet / asteroid or sun ) is to get someone of sufficient mathematical ability really, really, really high on Spice. The Navigators require HUGE amounts of Spice to plot a course through space time - they live in canisters that have spice gas pumped into them. Now consider - who really has the power in the Dune universe - is it the Emperor with his badass army? The combined forces of the Houses? NO! - the most powerful is the Spacing Guild of Navigators - no one else can fold space ( they have a legally approved Monopoly) , no one else knows how! Without the Guild the Emperor is stranded, marooned on his home Planet, years, decades maybe even centuries away from the other Planets in his Empire even if traveling at near light speed. Simples!
