Albert system clarinet (Borgani). Sorry about all the jackets hanging up. I did it to deaden the acoustic in the room to mrecord a voiceover.
Wikipedia says: "In a Sentimental Mood" is a jazz composition by Duke Ellington that is also performed as a song. Ellington composed the piece in 1935 and recorded it with his orchestra the same year. Lyrics were later written for the tune by Manny Kurtz; as was the custom of the day, Ellington's manager Irving Mills - who never wrote a note of music or a word of lyrics in his life - cut himself in for a percentage of the publishing, the song credited to all three.
According to Ellington, the song was born in Durham, North Carolina. "We had played a big dance in a tobacco warehouse, and afterwards a friend of mine, an executive in the North Carolina Mutual Insurance Company, threw a party for Amy. I was playing piano when another one of our friends had some trouble with two chicks. To pacify them, I composed this there and then, with one chick standing on each side of the piano." The original recording featured solos by Otto Hardwicke, Harry Carney, Lawrence Brown, and Rex Stewart.
"In a Sentimental Mood" makes use of a musical technique called contrapuntal or chromatic embellishment of static harmony. This is also sometimes referred to as a line cliché.

Thanks for reminding us that playing a simple melody with musicality is the first step in learning how to be a good jazz improviser.

This is beautiful. I've been thinking for years about learning an instrument, and I have an old plastic clarinet somewhere at home (from when I was full of ambition many years ago) so I might give it a go. Thank you.

Really, really lovely! I love the tone. I'd like to know what mouthpiece and reed you're using? I can't tell for sure from the camera angle, is your albert a two ring, sounds like a Bb LP? I see the wrap around key up top and no rollers? Does the lack of rings make it easier to slur and bend notes together, kind of slowly rolling your fingers off the tone holes?

Hi Lisa, on clarinet I use a 'Vintage' mouthpiece made by Morgan, medium opening. 2 and a half Rico reed.

I Googled the film and found out that the song you might be mixing it up with is "Begin the Beguine". Wikipedia says that in the film, The Rocketeer, "Begin the Beguine" was performed by Melora Hardin. It was originally and Artie Shaw hit.

Thank you Tony. I was intrigued by the concept of an online radio show and had a look at your website and listened to a beautiful track, "You Don't Know What love Is". Who was that lady? How does it work, a show like yours? I have many sax and clarinet audio tracks that I have recorded over the last 10 years.
