Not far from the beauty spots, Bali s villages hide disturbing secrets. The mentally ill are left untreated and possibly hundreds are held in makeshift shackles. But one doctor wants to make a difference.
"He's been restrained since the '90s. He hasn't left here at all since 1990. " A villager points to an elderly man chained up next to his own excrement. Such shocking sights are not unique in Bali. Helplessness and ignorance makes parents of mentally ill patients resort to confinement. "I love my child. But he's destructive. " Komang s father kept him locked in a cage for eight years before he met Dr Suryani. Bali s leading psychiatrist, she s campaigned tirelessly to improve the island s mental health but the Health Minister is reluctant to help: "We have a limited budget for drugs. Those drugs are expensive." So she pays them out of her own pocket. Her blend of Western and Balinese methods produces great results; thanks to her treatment, Komang is now recovered and even married.

I managed to convinced them that I will seek to a mental health professional... Good thing there's a public hospital that offers psychiatry services.. I was diagnosed with a mental condition last July... And still.. Stigma in this country is very apparent... I live in east Java Indonesia. One of my neighbors actually lived like this, he was locked for decades in a room hidden behind his family's house. only 50 meters from my house. I've heard him screaming, cursing, but sometimes he sang and praying beautifully (like in Islamic way). When I was a kid I asked people around me why was that man locked like that, they say "he's possessed by Jinn." He assaulted people and nearly kill someone in the past, when I grew up and learn about psychology I feel sorry for that man, and it makes me realize the roots of this kind of problem is education, most people here don't understand what mental illnesses are, they never actually think it's treatable. And I don't even live in a remote area, this is a regular city In Indonésia, and most of these people does not have awareness about mental health. Sadly that man passed away last year in that same cage. Yes mental hospital exist, but the society think people who went to that place is "permanently broken" , corrupted, and will never be normal again. That's why families choose to hide their child with mental health problem, they feel ashamed if someone in the family have this problem.

So sad to hear. But what good you gained so much insights. Yes education and trust is the key. Maybe they can offer in i hope the close future an treatment at first, or for a part or complete at home. I don't know internet is common in Indonesia, Bali, Java etc ? But maybe especially for this kind of situations they can teach the parents and offer some therapy and coaching via the internet if the distances are to big, when there's not much money for help at home. Or maybe they can learn how to put up more local hospitals and care / family community's with beautiful gardens (with an fence, and the possibility to go out (first with their prof helpers and family) more and more once they're healed) and enough care and security. I think the whole world must help each other with projects like this. We can change this step by step together. First Awareness, than aid so these kind of video's and discussions are very good. 💖🙏🏼✨

its the superstitious traditional medicines and spells that make them crazy in the first place. The partly crazy are chaining up those who go beyond whats acceptable or normal to them. i live in Asian village i can tell you.some of the sane ones definitely aren't normal to any outsider once you discover what they believe. Taking in spirits and all the magic etc whether truly occurring or group insanity its gonna mess them in the head.

WTF else are they supposed to do with someone who's out of their mind and they have no knowledge of or access to 20 years recent pharmaceutical medication? The morality bullshyt in these comments are simply astonishing. In America we are barely two decades in to having meds that can mitigate various, dangerous conditions. Before that we'd send them to sanitariums, which are soft prisons. These practices have zero to do with morality and everything to do with manufacturing and micro-research.

The local that I was with told me she was well known & told me how she became pregnant. I was told the high school boys invite these women over to a house while the parents are gone. They tell the women they'll give her food, water & bath. But instead they boys end up running a train on her & after they're done the dump her off where they found her. Wow! Great documentary. Great work. Congrats to Madam and Team. In my country, Sierra Leone in West Africa, mentally ill patients are often times left on their own. Lack of family care and sticking to assumptions (that the person is a drug addict or that it may be something spiritual) rather than laying premium on adequate treatment, endemic poverty, lack of education, lack of infrastructure and expertise, are the underlying factors. How I hope such could be replicated out here.

It's not just in Bali but across Indonesia as well. I'm saying this as someone who was born and live in Indonesia for my entire life. Having mental illness is like a failure, and it brought shame to your own family if the neighbors know. You even have to hide when going to the psychiatric or else people will says bad things to you Most people in Indonesia don't take mental illness seriously, they would just say "you should be thankful for your economic condition right now. You have everything what could you possibly want more?" Or "that's because you don't have enough faith in allah/god" since we technically live in the biggest religious country so people will automatically connect it with religion. Suriani is a very compassionate woman and I think she is very wise in using both, Eastern and Western medicine to treat her patients. I myself, had a very troubled youth and developed mental health problems including, depression, severe anxiety and OCD from a very early age. I spent half my adult life trying to find healing for my distressed spirit and, engaged in many different forms of psychological (and other holistic) therapies all of which, I found beneficial to some degree but never truly allowed me to move forward from my past and its associated trauma. I am so grateful to have finally found that healing in July of 2020 through a deep, shamanic, soul revival healing session and over a year or so following that experience, I was also, able to gradually withdraw my anti-psychotic medication (which, I had been on for 22 years, since the age of 15) and replace it for daily meditation. Prescription medications have their place when it comes to helping people overcome their mental health conditions (and are crucial to managing severe conditions like, Schizophrenia and Bipolar) but overall, it is healing for our soul that is needed to bring our minds back into balance and that recognition, is something that could greatly improve Western medicine in my opinion!

After living in Indonesia I can appreciate that although this looks horrendous, and it is, people don't do this out of malice but out of sheer desperation. They are incredibly poor, not well educated and tradition reigns strong. Instead of calling people animals and judging them from our own better living standards, try to at least understand, not necessarily accept or approve, that the reason this kind of thing happens is because the government could do so much better for their own people there if they weren't so corrupt. I hope one day things improve there. However, despite the tropical flowers and rich culture, I hated living there because these sights were unavoidable and left me with more bad memories than good.

I always say I’m so over being a American bc or all the horrible stuff happening in our communities and with outer leadership but then I watch things about other countries like this video and can’t think to realize how selfish I sound bc these poor people are just stuck with no way out of their villages and life styles. I will say at least this village/community doesn’t just disown them and send them off on their own and are just doing what they know and think is right. I don’t personally think anything they are doing is out of harm or spite or even to be mean they just honestly don’t have options do they do what they can to keep others and the patients themselves safe. Your post was very insightful and makes people stop and think. You can also tell these people are very nice people they are just uneducated on many things especially mental health.

They didn't say much about the women kept in the dark. A human being needs sunlight. Vitamin D. That is a good way to have her deteriorate fast. So sad and beyond torture. I was sick for a lil over a yr and all I wanted to do was sleep in a dark room, barely coming out for anything other than to eat, shower, go to bathroom and see my doctor. I was so depressed and I lost alot of my bodies muscle tone. I had a nice bed, internet, heating and airconditioning so I can't even imagine the horror for this women.

@@stephenmurray2851 I never blamed America for what is going on in this video. I was saying that people who turn their noses up at the treatment of this poor man do not realize how hard it is to help the mentally ill. I also was saying that by comparison to the way the mentally ill are treated in the modern medical community in America, this is not as terrible as it first appears. Nobody really has the answers on how to help the mentally ill, least of all professionals. A PhD does not make you a useful or compassionate person, and neither does a blood relationship. So many people on here have no clue how they would behave if they were given the responsibility of caring for this man. The sad truth is that most of them would end up treating him the exact same way. Or maybe they would opt for a more sterile and clinical approach and just scramble his brain in an approved medical procedure. Either way, the treatment would ultimately be for easing their burden of keeping his physical body alive, and not for the healing of his mind.
