For the month of October RocketJump FRIGHT School releases spooky, horror-themed filmmaking tutorials!
This week, we're recreating a famous special effect done by director Rouben Mamoulian and DP Karl Struss in the 1931 adaptation of "Dr Jekyll & Mr. Hyde."
Using contrasting colors in our lighting and makeup, while shooting in black and white, we're able to create the spooky transformation effect in-camera, without any computer generated VFX.
Mamoulian and Struss used specially-made filters of colored glass, but here we'll show you a simple way to recreate the effect with lighting gels, using the same principles. If you only have one light, you can try experimenting with overlapping gels!
Special Thanks to our makeup artist Taylor Berez!
Did you try out this effect? We wanna see it! Post your work on our forums!
bit.ly/RJFS_transform
If you'd like to know more, you can read an interview with Rouben Mamoulian where he discusses the effect in the book "The Celluloid Muse" by Charles Higham.

I knew this trick primarily from the Twilight Zone episode "Long Live Walter Jameson" (season 1, episode 24). However, the lights used for that sequence went from red to green. I don't know how much a difference that selection makes. Anyway, love your videos. Keep it up, and best wishes, everyone!

0:39 Wouldn’t you have chosen those because they are two alpha channels (RGB)? For example, would it still work with say pink and green or orange and purple?

This is ingenious and probably blew people away in 1931!! Also, those silly transformation faces...
@eviltwin2322

I suppose another way to achieve this would be to keep the lighting constant and split your video into the RGB channels in post, then dissolve between the red and blue (or red and green) passes. Anybody tried it that way?

I wonder how the effect would work with more obvious make up and using dimmer switches on the colored lights to fade the effect in and put.

What is this effect actually called, though?
@trollem69
@trollem69 3 жыл бұрын
Filmmakers back then were way more creative. Nowadays they would just use CGI to do that effect. I think CGI should only be used when u cant do the FX practically. CGi should be used to enhance the FX or to enhance the story you're trying to tell.

@misterwinkybluff5930

Not possible with this particular technique. The main reason it works is _because_ it’s in B&W
@KellyTaylor23
@KellyTaylor23 4 жыл бұрын
I think you could make it work if the lighting for the scene was predominantly red, then changed to blue. You wouldn't be able to hide the light change, but it could still be interesting.

Damn I wonder how the dude came up with this technique!!
@kaijeske7325
@kaijeske7325 4 жыл бұрын
That was also my first thought. But imagine this situation: the existing technic just films black n white. the make up is in color, like you usually see and use it. finally you recognize, that not every stroke of the make up is visible, depending what light is switched on. In other words, as modern cinematographer, we hardly experience those effects due to the cameras are able to show everything we can see. In our days we could maybe think about using infrared light for simular effects, but in color. Because we can`t see this, but some cameras (those without an infrared filter-surface on the sensor) sees it. Something which falls in my mind is the in camera way to blur the backround of an image whitin a take by opening the aperture while using an varable ND automatic. When the objekt isnt moving that fast, it could also work with an auto- shutter speed. (well, i might try that tomorrow. :D )

Yes, it is an old stage trick 'modernized' for cinema.
@vidimur1977

No. It was used in silent Ben Hur (1925), where one of the directors of photography was Karl Struss, the same cinematographer that directed the photography in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in 1931. Struss invented this trick.

Well another way to do it is instead of adjusting the lights, use a constant white light and shoot color RAW and adjust the white balance -> black&white conversion in post.
