In Cedar Key, Fla., Hurricane Idalia storm surge measures 6.8 feet

Hurricane Idalia made landfall Wednesday as a Category 3 storm and one of the hardest hit areas was the island of Cedar Key.

how many of you remember the no named storm of the century in 1993? no warning was issued as to the seriousness of the "zone of low pressure" in the gulf, many people were never seen again as storm surge traveled 13 miles inland, in steinhatchee all of the residents who could escape the swiftly rising water were huddled on the highest ground there, and all you could see in the background was the very top of the gas station sign sticking out of the sea, there were boats of all kinds left in trees and farmlands scattered across dixie and taylor counties, the devastation and loss of life was never accurately reported in the news, when i went to check on friends in the area after the flooding subsided, all i found in several cases was an empty lot where their mobile home once stood, no trace of the mobile home or my friends were ever found, other residents who went to check on friends and family also reported the same things, an event that i will never forget

Southwest of Jacksonville, we were forecast 40 mph winds and 2 to 4 inches of rain. Actual maximum wind, 9.8 mph. Actual rainfall 0.25 inches. Wolf. Wolf. Wolf.
