Ricky Gervias, a hugely talented, highly intelligent, and down to earth multi millionaire who has not been changed as a person by his fame and wealth. Obviously, I will.never meet the.man, but I would say he is still the same Ricky Gervaise as he was prior to his current postion. A very, very grounded, articulate, clever, nice, genuine, and hugely talented human being.

For me the issue isn't whether he is still 'friends' with Steve Merchant. That is completely up to him and not really our business. My issue is that now - and consistently for a few years now -he has airbrushed Steve out of The Office & Extras. You only have to listen to Sirius or any interview and all he ever says is 'when I wrote extras' or 'when i wrote The Office' or 'what I wanted from The Office' etc etc. It has to be deliberate. I think it is enormously disrespectful and also patently not true. Those brilliant programs would NEVER have been as good without Steve (as you can see from the brilliance of Hello Ladies) and i feel Ricky should fucking acknowledge it and stop being so fucking vain.

We don't know what's happened so it's hard to comment but no doubt Steve has had a huge impact on Ricky's life, a lot of his jokes in his earlier stand up routines would loosely come from Steve (I've often heard Steve make a joke on XFM & Ricky would later use it in stand up), Steve is a very witty & intelligent comedian. It's bizarre to think Ricky would cut him out of the credit for The Office & Extras but who knows what could have happened.

He's made a point of never rallying about politics in comedy. Instead all I see of him now is rallying about comedy itself. About a dozen interviews are him saying the same thing. Rallying! Early in this he paused and I predicted the next word would be "...anodyne." He's a clever guy but the reason I like him is because his comedy brings levity. So much respect to Steven Merchant for treading his own path. Familiarity breeds contempt, and his ideals on comedy are recently just a bit dull to listen to. We get it. Top marks for The Office, an insidiously slow drop in quality and creativity since tbh.

it is quite sad that he does not want/is able to work with steve and karl anymore. I think that a podcast again would be great. Come up with a few new ideas maybe, but at the same time I understand his point of Karl being to wise and stuff now which I think he is. It just would not be the same as it was 10 years ago, both have matured even if Ricky might be a bit arrogant sometimes now but he has still matured. And about Steve and Ricky I think that they both got frustrated at eachother after working with eachother for so long so they came to the conclussion that they won't work with eachother unless both parties wants it at 100%.

Ricky loses his words over that last question, a fair bit of stuttering. If I had to have a guess I say the interviewer decided to slip the question in at the end strategically. So much of Gervais' career is entangled with both Karl and Steve, and yet it only comes up once, and at the very end of the interview? The interviewer also sheepishly reassures Gervais that he need not answer. I suppose he's intimidated but maybe thought he'd try his luck by popping the question. Aside from the fact that Gervais gets put on the spot, I think its evident their relationship has changed. Ricky doesn't even speak of them both in the same way, he lacks the fondness I think he once had. I hope Karl and Merchant do well. Even in the XFM podcasts you get snippets of Gervais' pretentiousness.

I was looking forward to Humanity but if you’ve listened to 2 or 3 of Ricky’s long form interviews in the last few years then you’ve basically already seen it. The only two original bits are the bits they used to promote it which are indeed good but other than that it’s mostly him talking about twitter fights. Such a lazy cash grab. Money for old rope as Stephen Merchant used to say.

And more healthy. Turn slurs, topics and themes that people dread into something some can laugh at. Like when Chris Rock talked about the n-word and how they've turned it into poetry. Or when Louis C.K. talked about taking people into places they have fear and foreboding in going and make them comfortable enough to laugh. A lot more healthier than the overly liberal, self-appointed social justice warriors who jump down the throats of people, usually in the name of others, presuming to know both their minds, what they would find offensive, and also presuming the mind of the person who they're attacking and spout vitriol at, equating them to real racist, misogynists, homophobes, transphobes...etc. They look and create enemies and a fight where there is none. That kind of infighting is certainly doesn't help their cause, their image or progress.

They never followed each other on Twitter to begin with. They mentioned that years ago in an interview and jokingly dismissed it saying they have each others number and see each other every day. Karl and Steve still talk about each other, Karl recently made a joke about Steve on his Facebook. Steve recently said he loves Karl. I think if any falling out happened, it happened because Ricky refused to work with Steve on Hello Ladies (or Steve refused to work on Derek) and Karl refused to do a second series of Derek.
@oldskoolmacboy
@oldskoolmacboy 4 жыл бұрын
@@SorryThisNameisRestricted That's interesting, I didn't know that. Steve said they would work together again but creatively they went in different directions. Reading between the lines Steve was unhappy with Ricky wanting to hog the limelight all the time. Ricky said they were on different time schedules. So I think something has happened, but probably we will never know.

Political correctness has never been a good thing. It's always been the idea that offensiveness is a reason not to say something. That's always been bullshit. Offensiveness should count for almost nothing. The reason you shouldn't shout racial slurs at someone is because it doesn't accomplish anything productive, NOT because it's offensive. Those aren't the same thing. As you can see by the fact that many things you do NEED to say are also deemed offensive. If someone has an eating problem or an alcohol addiction problem but are in denial about it, it will offend them if you bring it up. But there's a good reason you need to. So the offensiveness becomes irrelevant.

We weren't on the same page anymore, and didn't want to stay together for the sake of the kids"? Fair play. But to pretend that their personalities and relationship are so fundamentally different than what's on COUNTLESS HOURS of radio and documentary footage is really disappointing. Maybe he's waiting for his profile to die down before unveiling his Andy Millman speech, when he finally gushes and tells us all what we've known for ten years: he hasn't developed quality material since "Fame", he became the exact celebrity he used to hate, and he needs those guys. JB: Sadly I think a lot of celebs live in a comfortable upper class bubble and therefore are or have adopted liberal, dogmatic politics and viewpoints because they're not directly affected by them.However I would bet there is a sizeable amount of conservative celebs that haven't declared their politics because the world of showbusiness would definitely blacklist them. It's modern McCarthyism- welcome to the future peeps

I just tried to watch his new Netflix special, and, as with his other stand up comedy specials, I didn't laugh once and found it to be be pretty pathetic, to be honest. The Office was good - okay. Extras was alright. Derek was pretty shite and his 'hollywood' movies were... just plain boring, dull. But Ricky Gervais, as a stand up comic, sucks. I couldn't last more than 25 mins of this new special, because it's garbage. The fact that the man is held up as some sort of comedy God in our times makes me feel as though we must be living in some sort of cultural dark age. I admit - i don't particularly like Gervais, due to his arrogance, vanity and bullying (see: Robin Ince videos on KZfaq), but regardless... his stand up, in my opinion, is so, so bad. Yet, after the failure of his Hollywood movie career, he claims that this has always been his true vocation and what he loves the most. Okay... whatever. For those who like it - fine. The audience seemed to laugh on cue; but for me, his stand up comedy is awful. I'm a lover of comedy... but this, it's just so cheap and unfunny. Anyway, rant over - I think Rick Gervais is a contrived, arrogant, pretentious "comic".

I agree his last stand up wasn't that good. But have you seen his Golden Globes performances. He f*ckin mauled all those celebrities. Not really a stand up show, but it was briliant imo.

Except he really was, though. It went way beyond jokes. It was bullying. "But I have no envy of Karl Pilkington at all. When I got asked to do the last tour, Science, it was quite easy to turn down. I didn’t want to swap my mental health for money. After the Fame tour I thought I’d never do anything with him again. Because it was monstrous, and it was horrible and bizarre. The way that everyone joined in, it really was very Lord of the Flies and of course I am very Piggy-like." www.chortle.co.uk/interviews/2012/07/20/15800/it%E2%80%99s_amazing_when_you_turn_down_money
