I would LOVE to be able to watch this again. Saw it in the cinema last year and it was astonishingly brilliant, one of the cleverest and best plays I've ever seen. Please show it again as part of the lockdown performances! I really miss the theatre :(

I saw the Lehman Trilogy yesterday as it was broadcast live from the National Theatre in London at a cinema out on Long Island where I live. I was glad to see the theatre packed as the more people who attend broadcast shows, it is my hope that more will continue to be broadcast. To say it was incredible would be an understatement. The show is epic in not only its storyline, but how the story is told by three actors with the most talent that I've ever seen on stage. They tell the story fluidly shifting between third person and first person narrative with all three actors taking on the form of various characters throughout the play. The set design was simple yet so effective, the music took on a character of its own, and if I had to choose one word to sum it up, this play is Shakespearean. While long (it is a 4 hour play), it moves fast grabbing and holding one captive within its first few minutes. If you enjoy theatre, this is an absolute must see, and what better way to see it than at a cinema close to home, being affordable ($25) and filmed in such a way as to give you the best seats in the house. I hope to see it again as it will show three more times, all in August, specifically August 1st, 15th and 24th. The perils of asking actors about the " meaning " of the play they are in. Acting is simply dressing up and pretending to be someone else . Kids do it all the time....

Loved the production and this interview. However, I still find the lack of diversity a bit disappointing - since, like Beale said, they could've cast actors of ‘any sex and type or shape’. Given the well-established lack of representation for women and actors of color in theatre, they could’ve easily swapped one of the three out. It’s already an experimental and imaginative production anyway, I don’t think it would’ve taken anything away from the brilliance of it. Just makes me feel like we learned nothing from the success of Hamilton and the likes..

I pity those who need their art to be politically correct.

Alan OConnor It's not about political correctness, it’s about representation. But I understand as a white male you might not know what that is; given you always see yourself reflected in media.

The Lehman brothers were white males. It appears cultural appropriation only works one way. I have seen female Hamlets, Lear’s and Richard II. No problem. But imagine the fuss if we had a male Hedda Gabbler or Lady Macbeth........

Alan OConnor I know that, and I see your point. But they’re not just playing the brothers, they’re playing all the characters as well as the female ones (the brides etc). And that’s fine. But patting themselves on the back and saying they could have cast any sex and type or shape makes no sense when they didn’t - they cast three, white, middle-aged men. Actors have being playing women onstage for centuries, it’s not /that/ creatively innovative at this point.

Charlie Which is why we need more female directors.
