I feel like making Billy into a good guy who helps fight off the supernatural threat would be an exact copy of what they did with Steve in the first season. I think he played an amazing asshole in the story

As a person who has abusive relationship with my family, anger issues and (previous) toxic coping mechanisms, I just want to give Billy a hug. Like really. I know how it feels to be in his place and I'm familiar with the inner conflict that rots you from the inside. The difference is that I got help and sadly, Billy didn't.

In my opinion, I think Billy does genuinely care about Max, it's just hard to see because he's so blinded by rage. Because that's what rage does, it blinds you. Throughout the show I spotted moments where I could see him legit trying to be a good person - giving Steve basketball advice, and consoling him when Steve finds out that Nancy ran off with Jonathan. But back to Max. When he first sees her arguing with Lucas, yes, he does the whole "Like it or not I'm your brother and I have to protect you." But I honestly don't think it's possessive, because after that, when Max sasses him, he grabs her to get her full attention and says "This is serious shit, I'm older than you." I translated that as 'I've been through more than you, and experienced what happens when you encounter someone abusive.' Rage blinds people, so it would be easy for Billy to interpret a heated argument as something that could manifest into an abusive relationship. And of course there's the scene where Max is at Will's. When he's talking to Steve, he's being friendly with him, which he really didn't have to do if he didn't want to. If you look, he only get's pissed off with Steve after he's been lied to, and even then it's not totally a control issue, it's a protective issue. He says "my 13 year old sister has been missing all day, and then I find her with you in a stranger's house, and you lie to me about it". If you forget who these characters are for a second and look at it from an outsider's point of view, that obviously does sound very fucking sketchy and suspicious. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that he's a saint in devil's clothing, afterwards he does get unnecessarily violent. But I just don't believe that his relationship with Max is possessive, yes he's abusive, but unintentionally, he has no one else to take it out on, so he takes it out on her. People with mental issues do that, they will take it out on people that they love dearly, whether they mean to or not. And the final scene that makes me think this, is the night of the snowball. When Max is getting ready, her eye meets Billy's and he looks very submissive and docile. I'm sorry but if he was intentionally being possessive and abusive I don't think he would have settled so easily, abusers don't do that, they don't like resistance that's the whole point. I think if he was intentionally abusive he would have gotten her back for that. I see that scene more as an understanding that she is in fact OK, and she will bite back, so she doesn't need him as much as he thought and she'll tell him off if he tries it again. Sorry for such a long comment!

His performance was the highlight season 3, all his scenes created tension

I felt bad for Billy, especially in season 3 because he never got to tell Max that her and her mother are living with a monster. He never got to tell anyone what his father did to him and his mother. At the start maybe Billy didn’t really care for Max and Max probably didn’t care for Billy but closer to the end you could tell that he did actually start to care, but he never got to tell his sister and when it came to it the only words that Billy could say before he died were, “I’m..Sorry”. It’s clear to say that if Billy wasn’t killed then the relationship between Max and Billy would’ve grown stronger, a lot stronger.

in season two i hated billy, but i was so obsessed with him- just his character. it was so different- where i just wanted to see more- 💀

He had so much potential and they wasted it. I’ll never forgive the Duffer Brothers for that. We literally have no idea when his mother left, we only know it was when he was a child and it was because his father thought she was cheating. We don’t know why the moved to Indiana, we don’t know if his mother is still alive. We don’t even know why his father was abusive toward him and his mother and we don’t know why Susan turns her head when billy gets smacked rather than standing up for him.

Whoa whoa whoa stop right there. Billy doesn't have to be an ally in order to be a good character. If he had turned against the demodogs and had a redemption arc, he would be Steve 2.0, and we don't need one. I agree that his character was underused, but we didn't need a big Billy story this season, we just needed an introduction, which we got. I think he'll fall much deeper and truly hit rock bottom before his character changes, if it ever does. And it doesn't need to change for the better in order for him to have a good arc. Billy isn't a person, he's a character, he serves a purpose, and if his purpose is to be a human villain, then let's go for it.

I actually liked how Billy wasn't a part of the story, it was part of what made him a villian. He's causing problems for everyone and making it harder for them to save the world. Which is what an antagonist does.

Billy might be one of the most interesting character in the entire series, with his emotional complex making the character multilayered.

Just such a cool character honestly, I love the whole arc he has. Sucks so many people hate him. Had he not died, he could’ve been a terrific, albeit unwilling, help with the main team. More helping for his own sake while unwittingly also helping everyone else in any given predicament lol. I’d imagine he’d be a brute just smashing into a monster with his car or some shit like that. Idk… I’m glad he had a badass last couple scenes at least

Some things that s2 Billy made me think: He's the other side of the same coin when compared to Jonathan, who confronted his own abusive father in s1, but was able to stand up to him. Billy is the kinda person that might come out of an abusive household where the abuse victim becomes more and more like their abusive parent. Also, regarding his volatile relationship with Max: It's not uncommon in abusive family dynamics for the older child to be the scapegoat of the family, who gets abused not just for their own mistakes, but also for the rest of the family messing up. Neil specifically reminds Billy to take care of Max, which heavily implies that even when Max is the one misbehaving by staying out too late, it's Billy who will get in trouble and get abused. So he's not just taking out his frustration and lack of control on Max because she's conveniently there, but because she's clearly the favored child and has likely gotten him in trouble before- something that Max and therefore the viewer don't really understand.

I finished season three one to two hours ago and I’m crying and I love billy in the season because you get to see why he kinda acts the way he is

2017: "billy is the worst character and doesn't even fit into the over all story line" 2019: " oh honey" I was joking billy us definitely not the worst character, but many people thought he was back in season 2 and the video talks about how he didn't fit in, but in season 3 he has a big role. So I wasn't actually say he is the worst I kinda love him lol

I really like the idea of Billy joining the group, but while Steve protects all the kids, Billy could be more focused on protecting JUST max and having more self preservation. I would have also LOVED to see a scene with Billy and Nancy after she finds out he was trying to get with her mom

It really upsets me Billy as a whole character was completely wasted. I was very interested to know more about his relationship with his father.. But then I realized Stranger Things isn’t about abusive relationship problems with your parents… So why did they even give this awareness to his character?? They never went back to it and they killed him off…… his emotional backstory should’ve came from Billy himself. NOT THROUGH L’s Eye….

I don't believe Billy was poorly written. He simply wasn't there any more than he had to be. Just because a character is well written, doesn't mean we have to like them or appreciate them.

I actually liked that he didn't have a change of heart. Enough people are on the side of the main cast, having a person against them seems refreshing to me. I wouldn't have given a shit about Billy if was like the second Steve, simply because we don't need one. I agree that he wasn't implemented that well, but I still liked the character.

Billy is an abuse victim turned abuser. There is nothing complicated about this, story-telling wise. That is his character, as an antagonist. That is what an antagonist does, build tension, and try and stop the protagonist's progression. You shouldn't create a character that isn't there. He isn't a misunderstood bully with a secret heart of gold.

Billy isn't racist he just saw that Max got mad after having a conversation with Lucas so he assumed Lucas was a bad person

lol all this talk about how Billy was irrelevant because he wasn't important to the Mindflayer plot; important things happen in our lives all the time, but the rest of the world doesn't go away because of it. Billy's presence made ST S2 feel more like a real world, because being in a scenario where you have to save the world doesn't mean that responsibilities, relationships and family drama just disappear so you can just concentrate on what's important. Billy's character played a huge role in keeping the series grounded with a more realistic problem as opposed to letting the series turn into a campy supernatural thriller.

After S3 I cried about billy and not hopper because I know hops not dead. Just realized I had over 200 like tysm everyone hops still alive. Let’s hope

That scene with billy and his dad i feel like was a very well used and placed scene. Since the whole season it seems he is unjusitified in everything he does, until that then it really becomes clear.

Watching this from 2019 after watching season 3 and knowing that all the set up of Billy wasn't for season 2, but season 3. The way they isolated him so they could fully use him in the next run is actually really effective(at least to me).

I think many people who dislike Billy understood him perfectly and not just at a surface level. Yes he had a hard upbringing and yes you can sympathize him. Sure, maybe he does care for Max in his own warped way. But abuse is still abuse, violence is still violence, and being apologetic of his behaviour is kind of risky. I believe he is at least arrogant and at least an asshole and i think him being "complicated" doesn't erase that. I think they can't make him a good guy like they did Steve, because I guess it would just turn him into a Steve 2.0.

I don't think he's trying to keep Lucas away from Max because he's upset that Lucas makes her mad, I think he's trying to keep what happened with his mom and dad from happening to Max.

His father's abuse is shown to us to explain why he is the way he is, not justify it! Billy is meant to be a bad guy, and he rocks it!
