RPGs are notorious these days for taking dozens upon dozens of hours to finish. Is longer necessarily better though? Whether your time for gaming is limited or not, I think it’s a valuable conversation to have. I love these games. No matter what I have going on in my life, it’s important to me that I find time to fit them in, and sometimes length is a crucial consideration.

The internal monologue part of this video was amazing 🤣 sit back down, lmao, nicely done. Personally, I just feel like I don't have time for RPGs like I did when I was younger - I was poor in money, but rich in time. I feel similarly about many games where there's a steep learning curve - I don't have the luxury of time to "git gud bro". Shorter games have become much more of my mainstay these days. You're on the money with the "leave them wanting more" though, for sure. Nicely articulated & chill as usual, my dude! Appreciate you & your content! 🙏

The rereleases of older RPGs have been some of the most exciting announcements for me partly because I know that a lot of them aren’t as long as modern titles.

I knew something was up when I found myself talking about Elden Ring the same way I talked about my degree in STEM: "If I had known how hard it was going to be ahead of time, I don't think I would have started." Even so, I have fond memories playing Elden Ring, and I'd recommend it in a heartbeat. There's just no way I'm ever playing it again, lol. Elden Ring is a special case, though. For most players, the knowledge and skill you gained from beating Elden Ring isn't going to help much on a new game. It's always going to be difficult. The only way it won't be difficult is if you've min/maxed some absurd route (which most players won't do)... or you're following a power leveling guide with exploits. There's no other game like that.

I nearly burst out laughing in public when I read this haha. I was constantly in awe of how expansive the game was. Unlike other games from FromSoftware, like Demon's Souls or Bloodborne, I don't think I'd ever be able to memorize where all the key items are.

I remember when I played Person 5 Royal on the PS4 it took me over 100hrs to complete one because of the puzzles and the other is figuring out what is needed to defeat the final boss during the true ending route. I beat Persona 4 Golden several times and racked up over 230hrs on my PSTV back before Persona 5 was released. With shorter RPGs like the older Dragon Quest titles for example I like to grind enough lvls to make the games easier. Yeah I can see why Elden Ring is a time sinker being a Souls and an RPG at the same time you really need to grind to make your character stronger to make the game easier.

If a game has multiple endings, I’m very unlikely to go through it multiple times unless it’s on the shorter side. While I love having different endings based on what you do, it’s a huge time commitment to go through an entire game again for a relatively small amount of new content. The ending I get from playing through the game normally is part of my personal experience with the game. It has weight in that way.

As a trophy hunter with a massive backlog I'm working through I feel like shorter games are becoming my go to. I look at a game that is 100 hours and I know it's going to be great, but I'm going to get exhausted after 50 or 60 usually. I feel 25-35 hours if the perfect length for most games I play these days and only rarely do I think longer than that is going to be worth it. I did play Ys 8 last year and that was 75 hours and I never once felt like "this could have been over 20 hours ago" but those are few and far between.

That exhaustion you mention is always such a strange feeling for me. I love the game, so why am I so burnt out on it? This is something I’m still exploring and trying to find a better way of handling. Because I know I’m going to keep buying the long ones 😂

thank you for classifying elden ring as an rpg, instead of soulslike. more people need to realise, that it really provides actual rpg experience. Explore, gear up, level up, become stronger, defeat enemies more easily.

Preparation is everything! Which usually means I need more INT. I get so hooked on the exploration and character upgrades. Finding new spells is always fun, naturally.

As long as it is good paced, I am okay. I played through all of Xenoblade 1 in a really short time... And the suddenlly I felt underpowered for the last chapter. Ended doing a combat encounter a day to grind. And I lost my save. So in the end I watched the final 5 hours of the game ob youtube
@IntentionalBrandon

That is heartbreaking! I have very faint memories of that game now, but I remember the final boss taking an oddly long time to take down. Maybe I was underleveled and simply didn't realize it haha

40 hours is great for me because it's still enough time to get some good depth to the story but not quite enough time for a lot of fluff to sneak in.

I recently started Dragon quest 11. It's supposed to be a fantastic rpg. I'm almost 20h in and I'm barely having fun, the story is going nowhere and the combat feels really basic. I'm glad I got it on a sale. Chained Echoes kinda ruined jrpgs for me I think :P.
@IntentionalBrandon
@IntentionalBrandon Ай бұрын
I really do need to try Chained Echoes one day... I played DQ11 last year, and I think I can see where you're coming from. The combat is largely pretty standard stuff, but the localization is so good. If you're not feeling it at 20 hours in, I imagine that won't change with more time. And there's nothing wrong with that!

I can wholeheartedly recommend Second Story R! Also First Departure R. Both are on the shorter side without much fluff.
