We're taking a deep dive, in depth look at BJU Press homeschool reading 2 program. I don't have the teacher guides to show, but I also think that they are not really necessary for this reading program, at this level. At this point, the course assumes the child is able to read and is therefore not teaching reading itself, but moreso an introduction to literature. The stories are diverse in style and format, and the corresponding activity book adds much depth to the course too as it covers not only reading comprehension, but other aspects of literature and phonics.

We loved the program as well. I did use the teacher guide and it was amazing. Basically I followed the flow of discussing the vocabulary words then reading the story and follow by the questions they provided (not all) and did many of the activities. We really enjoyed it. I plan to use it with my younger two kids.

It’s so cute how they only care about the cover 😅 my daughter told me when she saw them she was ONLY doing the seahorse book, then warmed up to the owl book, “but that’s all I’m doing” 😂🤣

We don’t do TGTB reading, this is her reading. And many of the comprehension pages for the BJU reading book I do orally with my daughter. She mainly does the other ones (phonics, etc) by herself. But I find that helps it feel like there is not so much on her plate

This looks great!! Now I’m torn between this one of Rod and Staff. Two very different styles. I only have one more elementary child, my 2nd grader and that’s it… so lately I’ve been so stressed out about choosing curriculum because I want to do them all but I only have one more to get it right at this age group 😢 Anyway, I appreciate this video!, thanks!

Definitely considering using this with my youngest, he is only 3 right now, but it’s in my top 3 for him. I am planning, as of now to not really focus on grammar until 3rd grade. I’ve been reading that students can easily “catch up” with grammar and I plan to make sure that the reading and comprehension is solid before introducing grammar. I would use this as a language arts for 2nd graders. Maybe have them write in a daily journal as well. And continue reading aloud many other books. Between science and history added on as well, I think this would be plenty.

Once they got past 1st grade and could read fluently we didn’t really use Abeka readers anymore for any of them. I used to have the Abeka readers for 2nd grade but my older 2 didn’t like them (there was nothing wrong with them they just wanted to read their own things). I will say, my daughter who is in 2nd now actually asked to do the Abeka readers for 2nd grade this year because she really loved the ones from last year, but I’m glad we went the BJU (I pulled rank on that one lol). She LOVES the reading and although she doesn’t love every page of the activity book, she still enjoys it overall and it has been good practice. I personally like the BJU readers better only for a visual standpoint…they change up what the illustrations look like to keep it feeling like you’re reading different books all of the time, whereas Abeka, they mostly all look the same. But at the end of the day, Abeka is still really solid and they both will get the job done.

We’ve always used TGAB for LA but I’m considering BJU for my third grader next year or maybe a combo of both like you did… Will you use level 3 next year? Do you just skip TGAB reading portion? This does look pretty in depth! I think it could probably work as a full curriculum for some kids.
