Absolutely fantastic. What a brilliant guy. Very interesting to get some insight into his process for some of his day-to-day life. as well as his take on writing his books. I feel like his intelligence is contagious when I listen to him answer a question or talk about... well, literally anything!

Pinker is just another academic hustler . He is content to leave the masses (us) wallowing in ignorance and misbelief. He never mentions such things as the fact that the science of classical logic hasn't been taught in our State controlled public schools for more than a century? How we supposed to understand the world if we are never taught to reason properly? The Underground History of American Education by John Gatto

I know, right? His thoughts are exceptionally well-structured and combined with his enviable verbal fluency he speaks more eloquently than even most educated people are able to write (not an inconsiderable feat). When I listen to him I feel as though my mind is being cleaned as pure sense is poured into it. Ok, my gushing is getting embarrassing now so I'll leave it there! haha

Pinker has one of the most unflappable and comprehensive intellects I've ever come across. I could listen to him speak on practically any subject for hours on end. The book he eventually did publish in 2011 on the decline of violence, The Better Angels of Our Nature, is utterly brilliant and highly recommended.

Reconstruction is a problem only if you wish, for some reason to preserve these languages. It would be foolish to assume they are all valuable, especially considering that nearly all of the few thousand languages fall into three of about twenty possible categories. So the good news is that its not necessarily a big loss, the bad news is less formal variety, or is that good news as well. Considering that the primary function of language is communication, the fewer and simpler the better. As far as artistic or esthetic value and self expression the most popular are not necessarily the best. Just compare the literary value and history of Chinese and Spanish with that of English, German, French, Russian or even Japanese or Italian. Then compare the current numbers of their speakers.

It's a nice way of putting it but I rather see it as the one frontier, no academic, even Pinker, dare cross. Forbidden territory and in this he is not unique, hence why I am not really angry. Suffice to say, a meme most certainly need not be accurate to achieve currency, even in the mind of a Steven Pinker. Still overall a great man and great thinker.

***** perhaps she thinks his book & thesis are crap and wonders how the thing ever got published -- and why? 'what's the point of it?' (such nonsense) is a perfectly reasonable question. which pinker can't answer because he probably didn't write it (and has cotton candy for brains).

Empiricism (Pinker) portray man as a robot or zombie with no central processing unit (a living mind). Empiricism portrays man as a robot or zombie with no central processing unit (mind). Such a man cannot perceive, feel or do anything. To do so requires the universal transcendentalism of Emerson or Leibniz. Even Kant came up short with his personal transcendentalism, which make no provision for a deity or even for a full-blown moral agent. Empiricism is the passive model of mindless anglo-american philosophy, foisted on us (evewn on Kant) by Hume and eagerly adopted by science , neuroscience, psychology, and by today's philosophers of "mind" such as Dennett and Searle, even sadly by Pinker, who at one time (in the Blank Slate) once realized that the mind is an active entity, but soon dropped that provision. The list is endless, and leaves anglo-american philosophy with a man who cannot think, do, feel or perceive, continued to this day by means of groupthink copycat academics. The problem can be solved by adopting a transcendental philosophy such as that of Leibniz (starting with his Monadology) and Emerson, in which mind (his CPU) enables a man to perceive, think, feel and do. -- see my website independent.academia.edu/RogerClough ---- Without governance the stars will fall. ------Without a single governor they will collide.

Yahweh is a deity out of a Bronze Age Canaanite polytheistic mythologie. He was jealous about his co-gods Heshira and Baal, and wanted tot overthrow Heshira's husband an upper god El. Unfortunately, he succeeded in it by gaining a majority of followers among the local humans... History might have looked completely different if this never would have happened... ;)
