He likes to keep a simple front. He's chill, relaxed, calm and that's the people he enjoys being around the most. You can tell he suffers from anxiety as well. He doesn't want to deal with anything that will cause him to be something he doesn't want to be. His strength is through music because he can express himself more than one way and it doesn't necessarily have to be about himself because in hopes he is reaching out to the fans. That's why he feels calm on stage and can have some fun, It's almost like he feels free. That's what I picked up from this. I LOVE it.

I the mask is a wonderfull album and I loved the title track instantly! It speaks what I'm feeling inside and it touched me, like Anders said, this song especially reached me, because there are so many moments in life when you fell locked in a certain situation, with no end or real solution in sight. It's hard to deal with these moments and so you don't really know who you are or where you belong to

I would say that Jesper gave In Flames character, but Anders gave that character personality. Which is ironic since he says in this interview that he's had problems with identity. But I don't know, I still feel like I see him for the person that he is through his lyrics, and without that In Flames wouldn't have had personality. The songs wouldn't have felt personal without Anders.

I'm gonna go on a rant here to the "fans" in the comments that treat this dude like garbage. It's draining to see the number of sheep who listen to metal because "Feelings are for pussies! LoUd MuSic Go DURRRRR" When you guys don't even stop to consider the artists behind the music at all. Our idols, like Anders Friden here, are intelligent as hell, and it's their emotional introspectiveness that enables the inspiration to create the masterpieces we know and love. And truth be told, Melodic Death Metal, and other subgenres of metal for that matter, have some of the most profound and inspiring lyrics you'll find in music all around. If that bothers you, you've never really paid attention in the first place. Also, he's getting older. He's got kids and a family to think about now. So, perhaps this most recent "earthquake", (if you watched the video, you'd know that reference), revealed more of who he is and what HE wants to write. With I, the Mask, it's not just about relating to the fans and creating music we can identify with, which honestly saddens me considering the amount of people who completely ignore that fact, but it's also Anders, (who's just a regular guy by the way), is just trying to be himself. "The jester that wants to be free." You ever stop to consider what that really means? Why the JESTER has been the mascot in the first place, since the very beginning? I'll give you minute. I feel like I'm trying to teach a preschool class about manners honestly, because the metal community has some of the most insufferable sacks of ***** I've ever seen. I'm not going to speak for the guy and say what HIS feelings are in relation to the horrible things I've seen said about IF's music lately, because it's simply not my place, but I can say that when someone who's main inspiration for their art is about feeling depressed, unseen, unheard, invalidated, and pissed the **** off at a world full of selfish human beings, taking off that "mask" they've worn to fit in for so long to avoid that particular pain is not an easy thing to do. Some artists are more vague in the way they convey their message in the music, and In Flames is no exception, but this is my connection to their music and always has been. I could be wrong, maybe they have no meaning to it at all, and I'm stupid. Either way my point stands. Last thing I'll say is this: I have Asperger's. I've struggled with socializing and feeling human my entire life. So, when I see a dude who's just trying to be himself, opening up about their internal struggles and no one listens, it pisses me off. Because the invalidation you guys are displaying towards him and In Flames' music just further proves my point that people who struggle with identity issues can't ever feel safe being themselves.

Please understand that these guys also were younger and their life changed like yours, and so the music changes because their feelings and vision on many things changed. Everything evolves in life .. stop calling it shitty music because their are not the same like in the past thats so dumb and just shows that you are not a loyal fan and have no knowledge in music! ._. Think about your feelings, are they every day the same ?!

Lol you gotta understand the overall quality of their music went down for a period I thought I the Mask was a good record (and it being my first in flames record) but going back to their 90’s and even Clayman it seems so much better, more passion, emotion, better instrumentation. I think I, the mask was them tying for sure, and I understand that Anders probably most likely can’t hit those growls and high screams like he used to and to an extent prefer his cleans now HECK I think Sense of Purpose is the closest record you’ll get to older 90’s In flames. Baaaaaa again those two records compared to their older records nope. But also keep in mind change isn’t always good especially if ur always trying to do new shit lmao this is why pop is trash. Sure I’m a newer fan but I really hope they go back and hey I’m excited for then (20Th anniversary of Clayman and even like the recording of Only For the Weak.
