Sweden’s influential and long revered heavy metal giants IN FLAMES are celebrating two major milestones in 2020 with their 30th anniversary as a band, and 20th anniversary of their seminal, critically acclaimed album, Clayman.
The band recently formed a worldwide partnership with Nuclear Blast who will debut a special version of the record, Clayman 20th Anniversary Edition, honoring the breakthrough release on August 28th, 2020.
Clayman 20th Anniversary Edition features all new artwork and 5 new bonus tracks including a brand-new instrumental medley and re-recorded versions of fan-favorites such as “Only For The Weak” and “Pinball Map.”
Remastered by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound. "Themes and Variations in D-Minor (instrumental)" recorded & mixed by Roberto Laghi.
Re-recorded songs were produced by Howard Benson (MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, MOTÖRHEAD) and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge (GREEN DAY, ROB ZOMBIE).
The record will be released digitally as well as on CD Digipak and a special 2xLP colored trifold vinyl that includes a 16-page booklet, 11 remastered tracks on a 12” record, 5 bonus tracks on a 10” record in a printed sleeve

On the one hand, I appreciate that In Flames finally did something to embrace their roots in melodic death metal that helped define an entire genre... But on the other hand, this wasn't the best way to go about honoring their legacy. The guitar frequencies are so scooped that Bjorn sounds like he's playing with his instrument hooked up to dual Metal Zone pedals. This mix is so bad it sounds like I made it. The original Clayman has a sound that some producers have been trying to figure out how to reproduce for fifteen years. This rerecorded version sounds like it was recorded at a Guitar Center. If nothing else, it makes me appreciate the mixing on the original that much more, and realize the problems In Flames has been having with music recently aren't limited just to writing.

You nailed it. I am definitely happy that they are FINALLY acknowledging their "roots" as Colony and Clayman are my 2 favorite "extreme metal" albums ever made...but yes...on the other hand, what the fuck is with the production? Also the guitar bridge thing in the middle was, to me, so anticlimactic and the synth was added to fill sound which could have been fixed by a better guitar tone...same with the solo (which is now harmonized...lol). Idk, all I hope is that they don't get discouraged with all the negative feedback (because there is SOO MUCH of it) and harness the fact that THEY KNOW how good their old material is. Meaning...do something like a "Throwback Tour" or something. Where they only play songs up to the era of Clayman or Reroute. I like everything up to Playground. But jesus, they really dropped the ball recently and it sounds like they have lost their passion, and just doing this to make money (which it is their job so they do need income of course). ON A POSITIVE NOTE, Ander's screams live sound much better these days than they did during 2006ish when he was hammered all the time lol.

Its the mixing. The tone is similar to how they always played live and likely on the album. The mix is just different, putting the guitars in the background and not compressing them. This change in sound likely has more to do with the engineer used than the band. Though they did sign off on it in the end. I kind of dig it, but it is very different.

I've been listening to you guys for 25 years. I swallowed my pride and backed your transitions when you wanted to explore with "A Sense of Purpose" and "A Playground Fading". I went back to the older albums when Anders's vocals just couldn't do what he wanted in "Sirens" and "Battles". I regained hope when "I, The Mask" was released, because somewhere deep inside I was hoping that you were travelling back to that raw sound you once had. I was not expecting you to time travel and undo the beauty that was your old works. Please, leave the past alone. Focus on what has still not been made. Or not. I'm just a commenter on KZfaq and a fan, what would I know...

They were always my go to band..and I always said they were my favorite..but now..This is just sad..they should have never gone back to corrupt these old amazing songs we love... Production is flat, but the biggest problem are the vocals, which sounded rawer and more powerful back then. This Anders guy doesn't seem to be a big fan of darker metal anymore.

@@LP-ov2ki Usually re-recorded versions are heavier or more modern sounding, fixing issues from the original recording. This sounds really flat to me. Bands that have lightened up going back and re-recording heavier stuff from the past has a greater potential for questionable results IMO. This isn't bad, just strangely muffled.

Totally with you, Chris! Pinball Map was the first song I heart of In Flames and it took my heart by storm back in those days. That was great stuff; 2020 version is just a simple disappointment from start to end. Let`s be happy, that we were lucky enough to hear the original song in 2000! Cheers!

Ok, the sound is very controversial, though I like the vocals, but I actually like the video. Has anyone picked out all the Easter eggs? The main characters are Whoracle, Clayman, the Jester. There also was a reference to Satellites and Astronauts (a rather thick one, tho), the castle resembles the one from The Jester Race album cover. But who was that multi-ball metal dude? And is there anything else?

The guitars just feel off, like they belong to a totally different song, and the vocals sound like Anders was forced to sing, like if he's reading but not actually singing with emotions put in there - it's even possible to hear the lack of pauses and stuff like that... Dunno, sounds way too linear, but yeah, in general, it's a pretty nice song, if the quality of the original is not considered (very bad mixing in this one). I was expecting some growls during the low tones part tho

I dont mind them re-record their old songs if they want to. They DO sound different but that's somewhat a part of the point. Its different equipment, people and state of mind. I think it's cool they re-imagined the songs! I think both versions are good and if you like the older one, nothing stops you from listening to it...

I know that feeling. Grats dude! (for me it was Dreams from the cranberries, which is even less cool, but i was a child back then) Pinball map one of the best songs of their last acceptable album. If i liked synthesizers i would listen to techno,... but i'm not angry, They made some of the best music i ever listened to in the early years, nothing can take that away.

IF: "You thought clayman 2020 was a step back? Well, check Pinball Map!" The guitars sound like 8-bit, the drums sound like recorded through a wool blanket, and the chorus backings sound like that Indian autotune guy. The Verse vocals are okay. Probably due to the fact that they sound more like the original than the rest of the mix... Hope the IF guys read YT comments. If so: GUYS, PLEASE NEVER DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS AGAIN, PLEASE!!

Oh god, and I thought the Clayman re-recording was bad. This is insulting. The drums are fake, the bass is non-existent, the guitars sound flat as hell, and what is this production? The vocals themselves seem like they'd be fine with a more natural production, but this sounds like crushed every dynamic in post. There's no highs or lows, just mids. And for the record, the "Bullet Ride" re-recording is just as bad. The only half-decent re-recording was Only For The Weak, and that's mainly because the song was already so clean vocal-heavy that Anders didn't have to stretch himself to sound like he used to.

its the producer all the way ,the producing style makes it sound like hollow & i agree with you it sounds really bad,they need to get Fredrik Nordström back on producing,Howard Benson makes them sound like shit

When Pink Floyd played live, and redid, "Comfortably Numb", I was like, "Wow, I like this new version better." That's because I heard it first, then I heard the old version, and was like, "Nooo, new version is better." That's going to happen to the Clayman re-recording..a choice will be made,( and even those these versions are somewhat similar ) one version will most likely have to be killed off within the heart, so the other may survive. I still don't think anything on Clayman needed to be redone. I'm not always into bands re-recording stuff, because usually, everyone will choose the first version they heard. This song was already in your heart, it is dear to you, and the band comes along and they're like, "Hey, I'm going to turn something you love into a total stranger..isn't that awesome." When bands re-record some songs, ( especially when they are close to the same ), I keep imagining the debate, "You heard Pinball Maps?".."No sir, I'm not old like you, I don't listen to The WHo?"..."No, not Pinball Wizard, Pinball Maps, have you heard??don't worry, it's totally new again, re-recorded by "In Flames"..."Ohh Yeah I have heard it, it has such a clean sound, it's awesome. My favorite part was the little trance thing they did in the song, I reminded me of Muse. ".."Have you heard the original?"..."There's an original?"..."Yeah, it's a little more aggressive.".."Ohh, that..I..uhmmm..I don't know if I can handle that..."..."You should at least check it out."..."No, that's ok, I mean, I'm already comfortable with this version."..."Well, maybe you should give it a try, and then, if it's too much for you, you can retreat back to your Imagine Dragon CD."..."I don't have CD's, it's on my Iphone."..."Well, did the radiation on that Iphone kill off one of your balls...", and it just gets ugly from here. Bands need to stop re-recording us into these conflicts.

Why are all the instruments / whole song so flat? It really annoys me. I love guitars and i love songs with high dynamic range. These flat out songs ... make me cry :(

My problem isn't with the re-recording itself but the mix, it just doesn't make justice to the guitars, they are sitting too far on the background and sounding kinda soft, the vocals are too upfront, drums too loud... Despite that, it's a fresh take on eternal classics, I think it's a nice tribute, just the mix that bothered me, this is just my opinion ok

*scrolls through comments, is proved right If these guys want to try something new they can. They got different producers and mixers for these, so yea, no shit, it’s going to sound different. I swear if they don’t try something new, the “fans” accuse them of being tired and stagnant. If they do something new those same “fans” accuse them of being a different band and abandoning their original sound. Anders did a great interview on i the mask, to paraphrase: he doesn’t give a shit what you think, if the band likes it, that’s all he cares about.

@@KirkTVOfficial i am Not, but I'm Almost sure that was the meaning he was thinking... Left and right channels sound the same, technically its not call mono? I don't know... The difference is in the number of channels (signals) used. Mono uses one, stereo uses more than one. In monaural sound one single channel is used. It can be reproduced through several speakers, but all speakers are still reproducing the same copy of the signal. In stereophonic sound more channels are used (typically two). You can use two different channels and make one feed one speaker and the second channel feed a second speaker (which is the most common stereo setup). This is used to create directionality, perspective, space.

@@Stormwarriorsve And also if you copy a track and use it as a left and right pan situation, you would have major phasing issues. The guitar takes were just perfect recordings that sound similar. Now whether or not you feel this version of this song is good or not is completely different from mono/stereo audio. FYI IN FLAMES WE TRUST \m/

I know these re-recorded songs aren't really being received well, but this is easily my favorite so far. The original is amazing, but this is a fresh take on the classic. I really like it. Good job guys.

The original sounds like it was made with the intention of unleashing fury in the listener's face. This re-recording sounds like a lifeless live in studio and maybe it should have been just that , a live in studio.
