Of course it's easier to let others take control of your life and destiny, as Ragnar's was controlled by Earl Haraldson, but much harder and stressful to seize control of your own life and shape your own destiny. He accomplished the latter at great personal cost but his family and his people benefitted greatly from his choice. Each of them, his sons and Lagertha, are guaranteed a seat in Valhalla because of those choices.
