One of the great things about detailed production design is that it pays off in unexpected ways. So today I explore the weird possibilities of that most common of objects: the chair.

Those jokes with the chairs that you pointed out were really interesting. Mainly the Chaplin one. This reminds me of how clowns are trained to use objects around them as a part of the staging they are in. Many jokes were put together by just using chairs, mic stands, coats, suits and so on.

It’s not just the chair itself that can do visually storytelling, its also how an actor sits in the chair. If the actor sits back, they are either uninterested in a certain topic or has power, if the actor sits forward, they are either very interested in a certain topic or is uncomfortable and has no power

4:40-4:53 I like this sequence of editing. Notice how the chairs are moving. From still life to chaos and back to still life again. It's a clever method of editing--a way to suggest the editor having his fun like a child in a sand box, throwing around sand--except, here, chairs are being thrown around. And then a return to normality--the stillness of the chairs in the Matrix suggests the framing of his brief time of fun.

I feel like Tony is indirectly making an excellent point about filmmaking, how his videos take the seemingly most mundane aspects of life and/or movies (a fucking chair, for example), and making a fascinating video essay out of it. Much like how he pointed out how David Fincher is able to take otherwise mundane scenes of three people sitting in a room, talking, and making it cinematic....

I love in Better Call Saul when Jimmy wants to hire Francesca even if she is ther first person that they have interviewed. His excitement is combined with a rocking chair, that don't stop moving until the silence of his waiting for Kim approvement.

The last scene from Werner Herzog's "Stroszek" is a really good use of a chair in the character development (even though it's a telepheric), the "Is this really me?" sign is perfect for the situation and gives the shot a bigger impact.

I remember when I watched Bokurano. That show has an extremely clever use of chairs where it uses them to show details about the different characters. So, the CEO's kid has an executive's office chair, the poor guy just has a mat, the girl who's close to her parents has a rocking chair, etc.

I sorta wish they had gone more book accurate for the Iron Throne where it is this huge crooked monstrosity that towers over the room and anyone wishing to sit in it actually has to climb a flight of stairs, made of swords of course, built into it. It would've sold the importance of the chair a lot more. But of course it would've cost at least double the money and made staging scenes around it a bit more complicated since anyone getting in or out of it would have to climb a bunch of stairs and everyone had to look up at them. I do like that they got around this by actually having the characters comment on how underwhelming the chair is and that there is no way the stated number of swords used in it's construction is accurate.

The one "chair scene" that always stands out the most to me is that scene in BBC sherlock where sherlock is getting ready for johns wedding and he stares at johns empty chair. It just says a lot about those two characters. It's also a mirror of a previous scene where John thinks sherlock is dead and he stares at sherlocks empty chair in mourning.

i really like the scene from the seventh episode in season three of game of thrones where joffrey and tywin are having a discussion about the small council in the throne room with joffrey on the throne. at first tywin is standing at the bottom of the steps leading up to the throne so it makes joffrey look powerful and big but as the discussion intensifies tywin climbs the steps and we can see how he towers over joffrey and as he shrinks back in the chair it's size is much more apparent and he looks small and wimpy. idk mayb it doesn't rlly count bc tywin plays a big role in it too and its not just the chair but. its a v good scene imo

I like the second possibility you mentioned the most--the chair as an extension of a person. It reminds me of the symbolism used in Star Trek for leadership. The captain's chair on the bridge of any ship is always in the middle of the bridge, bulky, strong, and sometimes the only chair that looks like that on the bridge. "The chair" is often used in place of rank or job; "Number One, you have the chair," when the captain is leaving and placing his Number One in charge. I remember Riker from Next Generation mentioning multiple times his ambition to "sit in that chair" as a job rather than the replacement. I'm fairly certain even the newer Star Trek movies use "the chair" as a symbol for leadership, supporting its themes. And just like in Up, a chair empty that was used often by someone is a great way to symbolize that that person is absent, often dead. Sitting in a specific spot is seems even more immutable than lying in one's own bed, so that someone not sitting in "their chair" speaks louder than them not sleeping in their bed. Neat stuff, great analysis video.

ranzes infante I used to want these to come out on a regular schedule, but I've learned that the editing process is freakishly unpredictable. So I'm not sure anymore. This reminded me of a great scene in American Psycho, which I rewatched recently after having not seen it for almost a decade. There's a scene when Patrick is in his apartment with his secretary, whom he initially makes moves towards killing, thereby making him feel powerful and in control. His attempt to kill her is disrupted by his fiance leaving a voicemail on his phone, which both of them overhear. Patrick, in a moment of embarrassment and humiliation, manages to sit down on the smallest chair in his apartment, which shrivels his posture in response to the voicemail, making him look, firstly, tiny when sitting across from his secretary, but also defeated and ever so slightly more human than what we've grown used to throughout the movie.
