In Quest of a Multipolar Economic World Order with Michael Hudson and Pepe Escobar

In this second round of conversation, Professor Michael Hudson and Pepe Escobar discuss the emerging economic world order which they define not so much as a conflict between nations, but a rivalry between two competing models of the economy. The finance capital driven model of the West with a domination of the FIRE sector, versus the mixed economy model represented by China and Russia which seeks to rein in rent seeking, combined with public banking and state funded infrastructure to support market compliant industrial development. In Professor Hudson’s view, this model was advocated by classical economists, from Mill, Ricardo, to Henry George; and is largely responsible for the West’s past successes.

@@matplot6170 Oof, no. If anything he's saying real _capitalism_ (ie industrial/productive capitalism free from dominion of finance capital which is all overhead/unproductive) hasn't been "tried before", or more precisely the historical materialist progression of industrial capitalism that brings about the material conditions and class consciousness required to completely supplant the circumstantial power disparities generated by prior modes of production (like landlords from feudalism) inherently as a result of the foundational material organization/power dynamics has been captured by an updated/lingering rentier class in the form of the FIRE sector (finance, insurance, real estate - all profit from rent extraction, finance in particular has _massive_ leverage through dollar hegemony maintained by imperialism - this is explained in Superimperialism in more depth), very basically a cannibalizing of the commons for private profit. As Michael often points out, _every_ classical economist, including Adam Smith himself, but also folks like John Stuart Mill, David Ricardo, Lassalle, et al., had this conception of historical progression and importantly the conception of capitalism as the vector of productive social transformation away from the vestiges of feudal social relationships like landlords which merely seek rent, ie extract value without producing value. Marx being of of the last classical economists and in extending basically everything Smith said (systemic falling rate of profit, highlighting the rent extraction inherent to the capital/labor class dynamic itself in the form of surplus value) and outlining further its logical conclusion, neoclassical (neoliberal) economics was born to justify oligarchical rule, particularly by disconnecting all historical context and relying on a myopic focus to maximize certain contrived functions (eg. "efficiency" in neoclassical econ is simply capital accumulation but carries with it a social connotation that appeals to the default liberal ideology emerging from the enlightenment, namely a false notion that "rationality" can be objective or systematized - a bastardization of Kant essentially ) to legitimize the "divine right of the rentier class". _"Kelp was never augmented by human industry. The landlord, however, whose estate is bounded by a kelp shore of this kind, demands a rent for it."_ - Ch.11 Wealth of Nations Anyway, I guess the point is if you actually listen to him instead of trying to jam him into a preconfigured category...he makes all this stuff pretty clear.

I have advocated everyone to default on credit cards since they stole the wealth of middle class that caused the financial crisis in 2008! Michael Hudson has written the book that this historian learned in 1972. It was obvious to me at 22. Wall Street is a Ponzi scheme received a business computer system analysis education in 1984 becoming more clear to me when I watched the lier loans on real estate before the crash of 2008 . The population of the USA told the Congress not to bail out Wall Street but Congress did the opposite of what the entire population had notified every Congress person thus was obvious that 🇺🇸was Never a democracy only an oligarchy that has no right to complain about Russia or China ! Hippocrates thus now teach the truth to youth!

Greece is utterly devastated. The young had to flee and serve as cheap resources in foreign markets, sending home remittances. All of Eastern Europe has experienced an utter brain drain. No more innovation and progress, just borrowed money and rent paying. Empire=Rent based Economy, or degree slavery where colonies need to work for less than market value. Combined with an exponential interest effect the colonies will always be completely drained of all resources, without having any means to build their own productive=innovative socioeconomic structure.

I'm curious how Bretton Woods came about and what was its relationship with the. founding of the new year America? I think Pres Xi stays faithful to Mao's revolutionary tenets for modern China without the propaganda, slogans and Communist ideological rants. Xi speaks ofao with respect: he refers to the the significance of culture in the continuous revolution Chinese and he writes about his thoughts in the evolution of China and his vision of a future China with the China dream. Pres Xi réiterates that China is a socialist country with Chinese characteristics... that is, China is lead by the Chinese Communist Party that won the civil war and evicted the genies in 1945. China is thhus a democratic country with a 192 elected members of the One Party, I 9 nominated and elected Polit bureau and led by their internnally elected President every five years. China has had a metitocratic system since they started the Imperial Examinations 2000 - 5000 B. C. In the west we have a donné person One vote. Every 4 years I vote for someone to be the PM and someone to be the Local councillor. I vote quite blindly o often not knowing who I was voting for. @1:24:00 right, political and police power is too strong for piecemeal reformers. We could run local Gesell currencies and land tax reforms, because on a local level a strong enough people's movement could control the legislature, but then the Feds will kick your doors down. The only answer it seems to me (for rapid enough reforms) is a massive giant humongous mass social movement, so that when the Feds come in they would have to commit mass murder to prevent the local state from implementing job guarantees and local currency backed reforms. Texas cannot secede because they're already near peak privatized neoliberal weak-statism, so they'd likely soon collapse from Hunger Games dynamics, the private sector cannot guarantee full employment in a state currency system, that's the bottom line.

Economic inequality, every pennie of a Billionaries fortune is a pennie not paid to Labor How do we celebrate May Day 2021 when it confronts us with major losses and defeats for the US working class? The minimum wage ($7.25 per hour) remains one of the developed world’s lowest. Capitalists and their allies have blocked raising it to $15 per hour. Amazon workers voted against unionization in Alabama. Many millions of Americans remain unemployed or have recently left the labor force. Accumulated unpaid rents threaten to explode an already massive homeless problem. The US failed to prepare for or contain Covid-19: we have 4% of the world’s people, yet 20% of the world’s Covid-19 deaths. During a year of pandemic, the rich got much richer while most workers suffered losses in income, wealth, security, and quality of life. As always, working class leaders and militants saw and fought those losses and defeats. They targeted a higher minimum wage, more and safer jobs in a Green New Deal, better pay, affordable housing, medicare for all, and so on. But these militants and leaders are also rethinking strategy by posing some basic questions. Do we keep trying to improve lives within a system that so badly mistreats and disrespects working people? Or should we face that the system (employer vs employee, i.e., capitalism) is the problem and that system change is key to any real, durable solution? May Day originated to honor the Haymarket Affair in 1886 in Chicago. The working class then combined a struggle for the 8-hour workday with a struggle for change beyond capitalism. Too often since, those two kinds of struggles have not been combined. Distrust, suspicion, and government repression kept them apart. This “old” problem is more urgent now than ever. The solution is that we must do both. We must strive to improve lives here and now and organize for system change. Either without the other was and is a recipe for failure. The best way to honor May Day in 2021 is to affirm and commit to recombining the goal of better working conditions with the goal of moving beyond the capitalist system. We hope that what we produce at Democracy at Work helps this collective effort to assess the world around us and to envision a better future. Join us in this effort by sharing our work or learning about the many ways you can support d@w. In solidarity, Richard Wolff Richard D. Wolff Founder, Board Member

Trump (via his bully tactics upon Fed chairman Powell) has lowered interest rates so low as to create the same type of housing bubble that we saw under President W Bush ~15 years earlier. The people who really suffer from the inflation made worse by Trump is the retired/elderly, who are on a fixed income. Inflation rises & rises, yet their income stays the same.

Hudson dismissed the argument that change can be initiated locally by arguing that aggrieved capitalists would counter attack local co-op banking initiatives using federal law. How fully have State/Federal jurisdictional boundaries been explored? For example, could a State declare an economic sector not-for-profit eg childcare. And raise State taxes to make commercial exploitation for profit in that sector uneconomic. Would doing so make space for cities, State wide, to implement local non profit childcare solutions.

They are running out of gas, high inflation, cost of living crisis (esp in UK), protests by nurses, protest by transit workers, plus a war on their doorstep with Russia. Things in the East by comparison is relatively mild and calm. In the US, we have Republicans who can't even decide who is the nest Speaker of the House. Border crisis, with illegals crossing non stop. Mass shootings, rising crime rate and skyrocketing homelessness. Plus we have a President who can't remember where he is at times. And here's the thing, this is just the beginning. 2023 is going to be the tsunami of problems, especially economic crashes. Mass layoffs is going to hit us hard this year, already starting this mouth. Amazon lay off 18,000 workers and Saleforce lay off 8,000 workers. Our oil reserve has depleted by Joe Biden. Are you even prepare for what's coming? Saudi is switching sides to East, made a deal with China to sale oil for Yuan. The Petro-dollar is on its last legs, will collapse within this decade. All these are just a few examples of what is happening in the West. We are going to collapse. Once BRICS Nations launch their economic currency system. It's game over for us.

I do not have the intellectual background of Prof. Hudson, but I do have a position on sound money policies and a sound global monetary policy. I do not think MMT is a solution and we may note that Dr. Hudson spends a great deal on the direction and ownership of currencies in countries but none on the nature of them. Nor (as far as I have listened to anything he has said) has he discussed hyperinflation as a basis for collapse of empires. I am not a great fan of Libertarian philosophy but do adhere to its position on sound money as a basis for economic longevity. Banking and its fractional reserve credit and propensity for cheating is at odds with this and the Dr. is also not a fan of the Western financialized system. There is an overlap here that is not incompatible and I have taken the position that free enterprise and socialism, by expediency have to be uneasy partners in a modern society. FWIW, L.

“Sound money” = Banks hate governments funding broad public purpose when they issue the currency, thus reducing household reliance on bank loans Also, fractional reserve banking isn’t a thing. Banks are not reserve constrained in their ability to make a loan
@larrygalearis7470
@larrygalearis7470 2 жыл бұрын
@@katiecannon8186 A little cryptic here. Banks hate having credit restrained under a gold standard and this is more difficult when the BIS has essentially nullified public central banks. Sound money reduces credit and defeats destructive credit cycles. So yes, banks cheat on their ability to make loans which is why gold has to be revalued during resets periodically when CIC gets out of control. I don't understand your :"reducing household reliance on bank loans" statement. L.

@@larrygalearis7470 Reducing household reliance on bank loans: Whatever our government pays for when it issues our currency is free of bank issued loans. So, our government pays for our military. Nobody in the private sector has to take out a loan to pay for our military. If our government were to pay for your healthcare, then you would be less likely to have to take out a loan to pay for new car tires. Or whatever. Because you would never have to pay your doctor, thus saving dollars. Also, a gold standard in no way restricts banks from making a loan. We were under a gold standard during the Roaring 20s that were followed by a private debt crash known as The Great Depression

@@larrygalearis7470 Gold standard: Our government and democratic pressure won’t be determining public policy by determining what gets funded. Instead, unelected bank CEOs will determine public policy by determining what public goods get funded when households take out a bank loan. And then pay a bank a tax in the form of interest owed. Which is pretty much what we have now anyway 😉 The difference is that our government funds narrow interests when it issues our currency. And then lots of us cheer when out government cuts taxes on those at the top so that they can keep even more of their government issued dollars. Dollars for Bezos. Bank loans for you.

Something inexplicable about Rent Seeker Feudalism, it looks exactly like Tribal Home Defence in the context of ecological survival conditions. The Tradgedy of the Commons is the failure of a Social Contract, Mutual Respect as it has existed by default, in accordance with the functional Gold-Silver Rules.., the con-sequence of selecting the useful narratives of optimal human behaviour that optimises sense-in-common resources. In other words, Michael Hudson's analysis of humanity's management of ecological circumstances in maintaining balanced environmental metastable proportioning of available resources to a stable Social Standard, is a Model to emulate, to reiterate the Education Systems of global interactions. All this poison propaganda and lies for the war efforts won't help anyone, particularly when they obliterate medical facts.
