I think the biggest reason radiohead is loved so dearly, is because they create music that people can find comfort in. Many consider their music "depressing", i think that's true and it's the reason why so many people love it, they create music that allow people to relate to being depressed and finding comfort in not being the only one who suffers from depression and/or has dark thoughts.
@NickSBailey

I think "melancholic" is a better word than "depressing" -- dark and moody without being suicidally bleak. In an interview about their early days when developing their style and approach, Thom coined the great ironic term "miserablist" - which seems pretty perfect.

Listening to OK Computer and Bends again recently for the first time in over a decade I was struck by the fact that Phil Selway is really their secret weapon. Sure Yorke is a great, tortured frontman and songwriter, and J Greenwood is a fantastic innovator, but that tight, super powerful drum sound really brings the whole sound together. And how had I never noticed the drum part in Airbag before? Give it another decade and I'll be back singing Colin or Ed's praises.

This album reminds me of San Diego and when my dad moved there after losing the house. We moved in with his high school friend, who became paraplegic from a dirt bike accident early in life. He was listening to this and Rogue Wave. I was familiar with Hail to the Thief already but this reminds me so much of that time. Later we were kicked out. My dad hasn’t spoken to him since -I don’t think. I haven’t spoken to my dad in three years. So this music is nostalgic with so many mixed memories. The pain of what it must be like to be lonely and disabled. The sorrow from losing our home. The dread of having chaos and conflict follow my family- interwoven with the excitement of a new place and the solace of a warm San Diego night.

I saw them on their In Rainbows tour as well. It was my 2nd tour of theirs I saw. *This album saved my life.* My father died not long before the release of the album. He was 52. I was 26 years old (only child, single dad) and had quit my engineering job to be his 24/7/365 nurse, caregiver, maid, shrink, cook, best friend, and driver, and in the last few days of his 4 years of suffering, I was his daughter again. When he died, *I HAD NOTHING. Nothing but death and emptiness and I no longer cared about anything.* I have never been so low or suicidal. Then... *In Rainbows* This was my life preserver. Now, this many years later and in my 40s, with lots of therapy and still alone... These songs explain SO MUCH MORE as to why they spoke to me. I can understand all of it, and explain where Thom was when he wrote them. *oh... Rachel...* Videotape kills me more now than ever before. But that is a conversation about the morning my Father passed away. Now, I know why he had me leave...

@@SamHopkinsSAH They've really only transitioned to playing what would have been electronic loops, on previous albums, with guitars and bass, which I feel is brilliantly executed. I don't see them as a jam band so much because they don't stray from the plot into improvisation. It's basically loose fragments that comprise a layered mosaic of sound in a very intentional way. Besides, there's nothing wrong with post rock.

One of those drummers whose appreciation tends to mostly come from other drummers. A typical example of his kind of drumming for me is Morning Bell from Kid A - it’s a very straightforward, hypnotic drum beat for basically the whole song, but the little variations he does are just genius, until the end where he kind of lets loose around that basic beat. And he is ROCK. SOLID. in everything he plays, a true human metronome. He’s not a Neil Peart or anything so his contributions would probably go unnoticed by most people who have a passing familiarity with Radiohead or rock percussion. He is great though.
