It's Superman," a satiric musical look at the DC Comics hero, ran for 129 performances on Broadway in 1966. City Center Encores! brings back the Charles Strouse (music) and Lee Adams (lyrics) musical March 20-24 for a concert version that will keep the swingin' '60s sound and the frisky humor intact. Stars Edward Watts (Superman/Clark Kent) Jenny Powers (Lois Lane) and cast, along with director John Rando and choreographer Joshua Bergasse ("Smash"), met the media to preview three tunes - "It's Superman," "You've Got Possibilities" and "It's Super Nice" - and chat about bringing the campy musical oddity out of obscurity and down to earth.

For better or worse, that's what gets cast in musicals these days. People who are more ordinary-looking don't stand a chance, no matter the talent.

This musical was orignially performed in 1966 so it came first. Also, Spider-man has been a huge hit so what lesson should they have learned?

Can the musical be retooled for the modern Rebirth Superman? I know there's problems using Jimmy Olsen. Interdepartmental licensing is complicated.

Jimmy Olsen wasn't in *It's a Bird It's a Plane It's Superman* as originally written, to its detriment in my opinion.

@@oliverbrownlow5615 Yeah, I think it's because he was created for the radio show, and it would involve a separate license. And Lex Luthor was very different in the 50s so even a rewrite would be interesting to say the least.

I tried listening to the original cast soundtrack. It lost me when the first song rhymed cape with rape.

I see your point, but Spider-Man also had many struggles and before they switched directors, the show was pretty much failing

It's genuinely awful. There's a reason its run was short-lived back in '66. My guess is the camp was trying to leech off the success of the Batman television show.

@@nightshadedesign Of course you're entitled to your opinion but I must disagree. If the only production you've seen is the 1975 TV version then yes, that was a big steaming pile. For me, the original show has a score in which just about every number hits it out of the park and the incredibly fun performance of Jack Cassidy as well as the other leads. I'd been waiting years for Encores! to put it on and when they finally did, it was worth the wait. One of the most enjoyable evenings at a musical that I've had in recent years.
