What's in this video: I scrap 18 random PC towers to determine their scrap value. I show you the value of the shred steel, power supplies, insulated copper wire, CD-ROM boards, CPU's, RAM, mother boards, peripheral boards and all the misc small bits.
There's also a mail call from my new friend, Seth at Street Copper 11.

Super jealous. My goal with e-waste is education. I love taking apart PCs but I get stuff that is the alternative to the landfill. The best I got at one time was 4 PCs and two laptops. I get a PC at least ounce every few months, so it takes some time to get enough to break even with boardsort. I'd love an auction lot like that but I'm not expecting that.

Do you have a video on categorizing computer wire for scrap?
@sharkscrapper
@sharkscrapper 2 жыл бұрын
I will add it to the que for a future video. A lot depends on how your yard grades wire. Most yard consider the ribbon wire as low grade and the rest as #2 insulated. You also likely need to remove the plug ends. Some yards, like the one I sell to, just take it all as #2 and don't make me remove the plug ends.

@sharkscrapper
@sharkscrapper 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like an awesome opportunity for you. Talk to the manager/owner and see if they'll sell you the computers from the shred pile. They can easily have people set them to one side of the shred pile to keep them well collected. Offer the yard 1.5 to 2 times the shred price per pound for the computers. Even at these high shred prices you should do well in the deal.

I usally test the machine to see if its working if not I tear it down and go through the storage and rom drives, I keep drives for spares for PC repairs and the rom drives I sell on ebay for a few bucks. then the cases and aluminum heatsinks I sell to a scrap yard and the rest to an waste facility I never thought about ripping off the copper and the oscillator whats in the oscillators?
@sharkscrapper
@sharkscrapper Жыл бұрын
Hey Dave, your process makes a lot of sense for someone doing PC repairs. Oscillators have a small amount of silver in them. However, getting at the silver is very time consuming. It requires breaking open the oscillator shell and processing the contents with appropriate acids. I've stopped removing most oscillators as I don't see it as economically worthwhile for my business model. I randomly remove big oscillators thinking I might experiment with it some day.
@David_Quinn_Photography
@David_Quinn_Photography Жыл бұрын
@@sharkscrapper ah thanks for sharing, I will let the electronics refiner I sell to do that extra work, he's got the acids to do that and he does share how much gold, silver, and other metals he's got from the systems with me and writes a check out to me for doing mass drop offs.

What are you referring to as jumpers? Is that something you are saving for board sort or your scrap yard?
@sharkscrapper
@sharkscrapper 3 жыл бұрын
Jumpers over some of the gold plated pins on motherboards. They act like switches by closing a connection between the pins. They are used to configure boards and components. Look for small plastic "boxes" over some of the pins. Then can be any color and pull off easily. Inside is gold plated. I'll do a short in a couple days to show them more clearly.

Montreal doesn't pay for any boards, they just offer free drop off. The scrap yard give less then shred for boards whatever condition. Board sort does not accept any from Canada. I'd like to get into the boards but the system is cornered by the municipalities.

I refurbish computers, and the 2nd and 3rd Gen Intel systems especially still have a lot of resell value to them. It’s important to keep in mind that a working system and working parts are almost always going to be several times more profitable than the scrap value.

A Longshot since you commented so long ago, but what do you mean by "refurbish"? Some odd reason I've collected towers and laptops and idk what to do with them now. Taking up too much space. I have the knowledge of the parts, but how does one refurbish a pc from 2010 and sell it, knowing that the parts are typically outdated? Looking for genuine advice
@Argophobiac
@Argophobiac 2 жыл бұрын
@@hammyhammell4884 As long as the system will run Windows 7, it will run Windows 10 and thus has some life left in it. I’ll just go through my whole process. First, pick out what is worth keeping and what is not. Anything older than Intel 1st Gen or AMD socket AM3 is really getting too old to work on. Yes, I’ve sold Core 2 Quad systems for $80 a unit, but there’s just so many units out there that I’ve found that’s the best era to cut off and focus on scrapping out. So now you’ve picked out your Intel 1st Gens and newer, your AMD AM3s and newer. First off, I open them all up and spray them out with an air compressor. Make sure to hold any fans still so the jet of air doesn’t burn out the motors. Other people use canned air or electric blowers, just use whatever you’re most comfortable with. Second, I unplug all the power supplies and plug them into my tester, and test all the power supplies one by one. This is really tedious, but rooting out all the flaky power supplies saves you tons of head-scratching further down the line. You can use some of the power supplies you’ve pulled from scrap systems to replace any bad ones, just make sure you remember to test those too. Next, hook the power supplies back up and start testing the systems. Upgrading the memory is a great place to start, go with 2x2GB or 4x1GB DDR3 sticks at minimum, 8GB preferable. There is a free memory diagnostic online called Memtest86, I’d recommend burning a copy of that and testing the memory any time there’s behavior in the system you can’t explain. Memory sticks AND SLOTS do go bad, so just do your best to troubleshoot them. Upgrade processors as necessary, try to root out any Semprons or Celerons if possible. Third, set aside any hard drives. I tend to scrap out any capacities lower than 320GB, but it just depends on what all you have on hand. But before you scrap anything, plug them all into a working system as an external drive. I use a program called Produkey to pull off any Windows 7/10 keys or Office keys. SAVE ALL WINDOWS 7 KEYS. This includes keys both on the hard drives and physical sticker keys on the computer cases. A Windows 7 Home Premium key will activate Windows 10 Home, a Windows 7 Pro key will activate Windows 10 Pro. The other program I use is called CrystalDiskInfo, use it to check your 320GB and up drives for any errors, throw out any that come up red. After that, after you’ve verified everything is working, get the systems set up with clean installs of Windows 10 and activate as needed. Some final pieces of advice: don’t spend too much time on any one machine, especially if it’s one of the cheaper ones. Always be on the lookout for parts that look especially high end, like overclocking motherboards or overclocking RAM. Even if they’re older than Intel 1st Gen or AMD AM3, they fetch great prices on EBay. I sold a socket 478 motherboard the other day for $65, collectors are always after motherboards. Don’t spend any money, and as little time as possible on cosmetic repairs. If a case has broken plastic or dents that can’t be fixed or taped up, throw it out. Laptops tend to get brittle as they get older, so doing any work at all on them can be more trouble than they’re worth. Wipe down any systems before you sell them with Windex and a rag. They shine up really well, just avoid stickers as the Windex can cause them to fade or rub away. So anyway, that’s a very long answer, hope I at least gave you some advice you can use.

I tried that and it didn't work out too well. They don't sell all that well and shipping is steep. I found that selling some of the components on eBay is viable. Things like 4GB+ RAM, 2 TB HDD's have a market and don't cost a lot to ship. Some folks also like to purchase vintage PC equipment - but that's a slow market.

I do get a great deal of my feed stock at no charge, sometimes even get paid for the pick up. But you've hit on the main challenge of anyone in this line of work - what is the value of our labor. For those that do this as a hobby this is not a concern. Since I have decided to do this professionally, my labor is a significant concern. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you as I'm just moving into a new facility with the size I need to gain processing efficiencies. All the other CPU's are sold for their potential gold recovery value so touching them on their pins or pads is no big deal. Hope that helps you feel better.

@@sharkscrapper Ive seen that from your videos but I really dont even know where to start. Do you just go into businesses and ask for their scrap PC's or do you just wait next to their garbage bin or are these friends of yours? Ive taken apart T.V.'s and a few DVD players but I didnt know what to look for (This was before watching your videos). You make this look easy but just starting out it seems like more work than its worth unless you know where to sell and buy and from who

It only looks easy because I've been doing this a long time. Even then, I sometimes get the odd PC or server that just doesn't want to cooperate. As for how to get scrap from businesses - yup just go in and ask. Have a biz card with you and a half to one-page flyer that states what you take. Be ready for a lot of folks to say no, most are polite about it, but it only takes a handful of good clients to keep you busy. I've also done snail mail and email offers in targeted locations. Another option that has worked for me is to ask the owner if it's OK that I look in their waste bin each week for scrap. Eventually, some just start leaving to the side to make it easier for you BUT you must visit the bin at least weekly AND always leave it cleaner than you found it - no trash lying around, close the lid, etc.

@@sharkscrapperI see, thanks for the advice. One more question, which businesses should I target? PC repair shops?
