We are in search of the B-52 Park located on the Orlando International Airport. Orlando was once a USAF B-52 base and part of SAC, the Strategic Air Command. The base was on high alert during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the early 1960's. The base was decommissioned and eventually the airport became Orlando International Airport. (KMCO) The USAF donated an airworthy B-52D to the city in the mid-1980s and that aircraft is now on display on the airport property. Albeit, the site is in a remote and not well frequented area.

If I recall correctly, Being a retired AF engine mechanic I worked on this tail # at Dyess back in the early 80"s. What a blast to run and tune this acft. Had to do it for the ORI inspection. No, no pressure at all lol. Thanks for the fond memories.....

Thanks for the video . I would rate it a 12 on a scale of 10. Of coursework I have almost 4,000 hours in the B-52 and about half of it was in the D model and had 6 missions to Hanoi. The D model is my favourite.

I'm glad she's survived all those hurricanes and seems to be in excellent shape. The D model at the Edwards AFB museum as scrapped a couple of years ago due to extensive corrosion. Hard to believe a plane located in the desert would corrode so much while one in a hot wet humid environment could survive so well. She must have a team looking out for her.

When I visited this aircraft a few years ago, it was home to an amazing number of wasp nests. All interior access is blocked off to keep people from getting inside and stealing what little is left of the interior. Police WILL arrest anyone attempting to get into the aircraft.

The aircraft was flown into MCO when the USAF donated it to the City of Orlando. So, at that time is was in airworthy condition. However, after years of sitting outside without the TLC of a qualified maintenance crew, it naturally became the home for plenty of birds, wasps and other critters.

Thanks Brian for this great video! I wish I would have known about this plane when I visited Orlando 2 years ago - I would for sure have visited it. Maybe next time.

I was in boot camp in the Navy near here in 1972. It was McCoy AFB which is why Orlando International has MCO as its airport code. I remember a dark very stormy morning in March lined up for breakfast. Heard a B-52 on approach. There was almost continuous lightning. The bomber crashed in a residential neighborhood killing all 7 crewmembers.

Fun fact, no APU on the B52. There were 2 main methods of starting the aircraft: air cart and 'cartridge' start, using tiny rocket motors to spin the engine up to speed.

Actually the cartridge was approximately a #10 (food service) can of black powder. There was a breech on the engines when the can was fitted with a bell looking cap with lock tabs that kept it in place. While on Nuclear Alert the #4 and #5 engines would have cartridges installed and a switch in the cockpit sent a firing voltage down to the carts to ignite the powder which in turned would rotate the compressors in the engine, at a certain point the throttle was advanced and the engine would start. the other 6 engines were then started by bleed air from the cartridge started engines. Lots of thick black smoke poured from the 2 cartridge loaded engines while the powder burned. It was quite a sight.

Most every thing on the D model was run off bleed air from the engines. That was one of the exhaust vents for the bleed air system.

When I was young Dad would take us from Ky. to Orlando for a vacation. We would spend part of one day out by McCoy AFB watching the B52's take off and land. I would love to make it back down there and visit this park. Thanks for the video!!

Did you post about the 1972 B52 crash at McCoy, that nearly took out a neighborhood, but for heroic last acts of the crewmen? I was 13 & lived near McCoy AFB & those memories never fade. RIP to all victims.

Good morning I write from France i know orlando Airport but where is this B52. I remember in 1986 it was at the entrance. Every year later i see its when I take off from Orlando airport. Now Where is it please!
@FlynBrian

+mbour Du It is on the north side of the airport just west of the airport entrance road. It is off the beaten path for sure. While not hard to get to, one needs to know what roads to take to get to it.

Nice visuals, but clearly a complete lack of awareness and respect of what this B-52D represents. It is painted in the Operation Arc Light jungle camo, which SAC used for B-52s pulled out of nuclear alert rotation for use in Vietnam. They were painted this way because they were originally natural metal finish on upper surfaces with nuclear anti-flash underneath, so they were far too highly visible. This very aircraft was very likely part of the 126,000 Arc Light or Linebacker II missions over Hanoi from 1965 to 1972 where 18 B-52s just like this were shot down, resulting in 92 crew members ending up KIA/MIA/POWs. Sorry, that touched a nerve because my father flew these and your wife looked bored and rated it a 5
