Dan "apEX" Madesclaire, two time major champion and the in-game leader of Team Vitality, is the star of the 274th Episode of 'Reflections'.
A source player, apEX's big break came in CS:GO. From pulling off upsets with Clan-Mystik and LDLC, apEX established himself as a world class entry player. Joining Titan and later Team EnVyUs his biggest career accomplishment came winning the Dreamhack Cluj-Napoca major with the team as the number one ranked side in the game.
Later years were more fallow but the G2 super-team would win ESL ProLeague S5 Finals and Dreamhack Masters Malmo in 2017. 2018 was a wash, even being benched for an experimental line-up, but forming what became Team Vitality, around prodigy ZywOo, was apEX's ticket back to the top. In 2018 the team won cs_summit 4, ECS S5 and EPICENTER.
Taking over leadership duties as IGL of Vitality, apEX led the team to battle Astralis for the best team of 2020 - the online era. They reached a number of finals before eventually winning IEM Beijing Europe and BLAST Fall. 2021 was rough online but the arrival of LANs later in the year saw Vitality become a top three team and culminated with them winning IEM Winter.
2022 was rough, as the Astralis-infused international Vitality line-up only managed two finals and made no impact on the majors. Gaining Spinx allowed them to win ESL ProLeague S16 but then there were struggles before the team ticked over recently and won IEM Rio, the BLAST Paris major and finished second at BLAST Sring Finals.
In part one, apEX talks about classic French team-mates over the years (shox, NBK and kennyS) and his current players (ZywOo and Spinx), as well as his entry role days and how lazy some of his team-mates were at times.
This interview was recorded on the 29th of May, 2023.
► Time-line of topics discussed:
00:00 Intro and French super-team 2017 G2
03:13 shox
09:43 NBK
17:37 kennyS
26:22 Work ethic and frustration with team-mates
31:33 Hard entry
37:09 Entry mindset
40:39 Weird veto superstition (such as cache vs. C9)
43:38 ZywOo not selfish enough?
50:14 ZywOo's difficulties in prestige tournaments
56:04 Spinx
Part two will be released in the following days.

Apex is great player. People read in too much on his ingame "rages". He seems like a true leader and someone that guides the team extremely well outside the server as well.

apex is an amazing guest. very well spoken, gave a lot of insight without throwing teammates under the bus and overall very well spoken. one of the few guests where it never felt like thorin had to try really hard to get him to speak. if anything, he had to try hard to make apex not ramble for too long. amazing episode

Well, apEx played on LDLC, Titan, ENVY, G2, and Vitality. Pretty much always on French teams with 2-3 cores his whole career. Great player, not necessarily a journeyman like twist.

All these interviews you have done over the years are of high quality and are important for the history of cs/esport to live on. The insight into esports that I have gained through these videos I could not get anywhere else. The Reflections series will probably always get views from younger generations who are interested in esports. You are doing important work Duncan. Thank you.

I always find it funny when people try to make a case about Thorin being irrelevant, but you don't see nobody else landing these kinds of interviews. Have a great summer Duncan, best regards from Finland.

Excellent video, i remember watching the tournaments apex mentioned back in the day and seeing him entry frag and for the era of csgo, apex you had to be in top 3 for your role at the time, i am curious as to how you found the transition from entry fragger to igl and how you went about it, so for me i hope that comes up in the next part. :)

What Apex says at 9:35 is something i realized about myself and other younger csgo players whenever playing with people you could describe as elder players. While for younger players the focus shifts more and more to raw mechanics, older players have a more strategical approach to the game. I feel like a MM-Mode you can solo queue is in part responsible for this difference.

ZywOo wouldn't be as good if he didn't have this "emotionless" state. It's a gift. But also a curse. Same goes for s1mple's undying greed to win and his emotional outbursts. Apples and Oranges. In NBA terms it's like Duncan or Kobe.

I don't think we should confuse his "twitter" persona with his more professional persona. One side makes him infamous and keep his presence, the other makes great contents and connections. The combination of both makes him relevant, and he's nothing without one or the other.

I wouldn’t really say so. Vertigo seemed like an extreme off game and his form on vertigo seemed a bit off the last few matches. He played well the last two maps, whereas he would always get shut down in the past.

18:50 kennyS is 10000000% the Ronaldinho of CSGO, he's the real goat, but the newer fans will always downplay his career for having been a long time ago and so "short" , anyone who watched him live in 2014 and 2015 knows he's the goat.
