I’m former Scots Guards myself, we had a company from the Welsh Guards attached to our Battalion in Northern Ireland and honestly have to say we could wait for them to leave as they had caused so many problems on both sides of the divide. Typical bloody Rupert giving one of his guys a Bollocking yet silhouetting them both on the hill, perfect for the gunman. 💂‍♂️🔵🔴🔵💂‍♂️

I'm ex Jock guards and we had quite a few Welsh guards attached to us in Germany two in my platoon and they were good lads I'd say. That young officer is a proper knob like pissing the blokes off on patrol.

Maybe he was thinking that IRA was not a regular army and volunteers had only a soviet-style training, so it was unlikely that som "provo" could spot those men standìding and even more unlikely that he could take a hit. British Army was prepared to fight against the National Volksarmee, the heir of Wehrmacht, so IRA, withe the due respect, was not the same

Young officers are managed by the Platoon Sgts,give them their head and they will only fuck things up..most look to the NCOs and learn quickly when to fuck off and leave the troops alone..Back in the UK you don’t see your officers much,they are always out and about in London.

Is incredible how time goes by. I remember watching this series when it came out in 1995. I was living in Australia at that time. I was surprised by the lack of military bearing of the new officer and how long his hair was. The guardsmen did not look very fit either. Obviously, the standards of excellence were dropping fast in the British army even then.

Take away all the tradition and gusto and you still have but a man like everyone else, being told he must be slightly more than just that. It's difficult for anyone to become a leader of men and sometimes we don't get it right from the beginning. Even as an elistedwoman I still feel a bit sad for young officers who don''t fully ''get it'' from jump street. It's still a person trying to fit in, to juggle the job and being themselves, only from such a young age they must lead men. Thats asking alot of anyone.

Would it come into question of suspicion, that if youve done over four years, and are quite good at your job, have done a couple of op. tours, That you dont get offered a promotion? This is why the Army is crumbling in this day and age , Was in the shitty Scots bastard gay guard's, between 2004,-2008, did operation Herrick 7 Afghanistan in 2007, Cant wait to get the all clear in The RAF REGIMENT reserves, but hey that's life! @PaddyInf
@PaddyInf 4 жыл бұрын
At the 4 year point you should be looking at promotion. However it is not automatic. You need to earn it. First, having done tours has little bearing on promotion. Most of your Regiment will have done the same tours, and infantry regiments were doing one every 18-24 months at that time. You usually have no choice about going. Your actual performance on the tour is taken into account. Second, being good at your job is expected regardless. It is not a reason for promotion. Yes you do need to be good at what you do, however it is the extra stuff like initiative, maturity, leadership potential etc that get you promoted. What did you do that demonstrated these? Were you helping the new Toms when they were struggling? Were you de-facto section 2IC when the LCpl was not around? Did you do any regimental sports or other activities where leadership potential and teamwork were evident? Third, were you consistently top 3rd in your appraisals? Promotion is a competition. There are only so many LCpl slots each year, and you need to be sticking out from your peers. Were people at your stage or below getting picked up? If so then you need to take a look at yourself and question what they are doing that you aren't. Fourth, did you ever speak to your Platoon Commander about why you were not recommended? Did you ask for development points to gain one next year? Did you improve on the points raised in your midyear reports? It's your career so you have to take responsibility for it. Taking a look at your service history it paints a picture of someone who felt entitled to a promotion and stamped their feet and signed off when they didn't get one instead of knuckling down and earning that recommendation.

ruperts get a lot of flack but you can tell he's just trying to do what he think he should with how he's been trained to do it, adn i'm sure he feels as just as much of an idiot at times as the squaddies see him as. He's in same boat as as any new soldier but he's just having to play a different game. I knew some people who are ruperts and they're right good lads but some lads, when their families are a bit posh, are pressured by their dads into going to sandhurst instead of just being a soldier even if they don't want to do it. Bloody hell I'm working class and even my dad wanted me to go to RMAS, but I'm going regs instead after being in the reserves for a bit over a year. Cannot see myself as an officer at all and even if I did I'd want to be a reg for a good few years before I went into it.
