Locker Nuts episode 497
I paid $150 for this 5x10 locker, and thought I had picked up a deal since the wheelchair right in front retails for well over a thousand dollars. There was a lot of stuff to find our profit in, but unfortunately most of it is straight up garbage, like junk mail and human hair. The things people keep! But things are about to get exciting, as I make my way to the back and bring new truth to that old belief that people hide the best stuff in the back of the locker. What will we find? Let's discover it together in this episode of Locker Nuts.

Had a family member die. The kids threw out tons of paperwork, then found that there was money hid inside each piece of paperwork. They retrieved everything. It turns out they had put THOUSANDS of dollars in the trash. There was money stuck in books, cracks in the walls.. tucked everywhere.

With the crazy ways things were wrapped I would have looked in the coffee jars. My in-laws kept money and valuables in some of the strangest places, including food containers and hygiene containers in the bathroom. But they used their dishwasher as a file cabinet which also had money in it. Another great locker.

Definitely a possibility. I went through much more than I showed on camera. It gets to a point where it's a time management issue. The time invested might cost more than any potential money found, to do it thoroughly, as there was an overwhelming amount of paperwork. Better to follow the signs of stuff treated "special" like in a locked briefcase, or with the jewelry which was 4 layers of bags in bags, all of which tied tightly with the handles.

Deeds, original stock certificates, Berar bonds, cards with forgotten money in them. Never not go through the papers. I was what the navy called TAD to the on base recycle facility. I was on the sorter table when we had a bulk of old Christmas cards and other items I just for fun opened one, it had twenty dollars cash in it, needless to say I took the rest to lunch and cleaned house. It was worth my lunch break. I also found forty prepaid phone cards of different monetary values. Let's just say I did not have to pay for calls home to the parents for the rest of my time in the service.

Never throw away what looks like junk mail to you without going through it thoroughly. I was watching a video on an extreme cleaners' channel recently where they found over 50000$ - yes, four zero's! It's not a mistake- in envelopes together with old bills and receipts in a hoarder's house. If you don't have the time to do that immediately, put everything in a box or sack and check it later at your ease.

@@dawnmichele6847 I get that, but the other side is that this is their business. The people that lost their storage locker LOST their storage locker, plain and simple. Sad as it is, it becomes”a business transaction” to the buyer of the unit. It is not possible to give the contents back to the people who lost it. That would mean that you could rent a unit, sign a contract, violate that contract and get your stuff anyway! Not the way it works. However, there are times when the buyers of this unit tell us that they return personal items, such as pictures, passports, licenses, etc to owners. It may seem callous, but it is what it is😍

I was just thinking along those lines. She was in a wheelchair. She liked pretty things. So, what happened? Did she wind up in an assisted living facility and decided to store her stuff? For what? I think there's a lot to be said for starting to give away, or donate, or sell some things...when we get to a certain age...while we still have the capability to do it. Paying for storage, when you know you aren't going to live much longer, is just sad.

I am a disabled veteran, and have 30 years experience with durable medical equipment. items such as that wheelchair are marked up astronomically, with the plan that insurance companies require a huge discount on equipment before they will get it for their customers. most people who need a wheelchair have some form of assistance to get them. I, personally use a power chair, but sometimes have to have a push chair because of transportation issues. the only people who are paying out of pocket for a chair like that are those that have fallen through the cracks, and have no insurance, or people like me that need an alternate item for when the one insurance bought. my power chair is "sold" for 14,000. ( I am sure the VA did not pay that much) but I had to pay for my push chair myself, and had to buy a used one from a junk store. it IS junk, but I need it. I paid $75 for it. if you try to recoup the "retail" price on a chair like that, you are gouging the person that really needs it to be able to live their life. Quickie is a much better brand than I have as my push chair, but even though, someone who is needing that will not have that kind of money more often than not. humanity would require that you price items like that commiserate with the lives of the people who need to find a used chair that will do what they need. with everything else in that locker, I would honestly either donate that chair to someone who needs it, or at most sell it for $50. to someone who can not walk, a wheelchair is life, it's self. we can not leave our bedrooms with out our chair. socializing, or even buying food is dependent on the chair. think of every time you have stood and walked even just to another room this week alone. now, imagine you couldn't do that. any other item, I am all for you getting what ever you can for. mark stuff up as far as the market will support. but durable medical equipment is life or death to people. I am very lucky the VA supplies my needs, but so many people don't have that kind of help.

I am going to guess that this unit is from a woman who was in/out different assisted Living or Nursing homes...Just the way things are in bags/boxes, paperwork, and medical items. My dad was in that situation for years. I had a storage unit after I sold his house and had his furniture and collectibles. But part of the unit I would just throw in items like this when he went back/forth between places/hospital too. He would randomly ask for things and I couldn't throw it away. I sold off all the furniture and anything that I knew he wouldn't ask for...Then after he passed two years ago, I downsized the unit in 1/2 and worked through selling stuff locally and online. I still have a bunch left but now stacked in my ebay room to list. Anyways...that is my guess on the backstory for this unit. It just looks familar to me.

I know this is going to sound way gross, but my husband who was born in 1937, has a bracelet made out of his great grandmother’s hair. It was a ‘thing’ back then to remember a loved one, and it took a lot of skill and talent to make one, so maybe she was saving her hair to do something similar.

She kept all the paperwork because she was documenting her injury. From watching these few episodes my guess is a serious accident and possibly a loss of a leg. Take it from someone who has had to document everything for a accident injury. You must keep it all for a period time. My time for the most part is over but there are thing I still have to keep. Yes she keep a bunch trash but the medical paperwork was important.

It sure would seem like it, and I did find a few single shoes, but the management there didn't mention anything about a wheelchair currently, so I don't think she was one-legged. Apparently she had 5 units previously, and would come and spend the day in them, and they had to shoo her away at the end of the day or else she'd get locked in the facility. The other units were auctioned off previously.

The only furs I wear are fine vintage, so it doesn't encourage or benefit the fur industry. Wilson's and North Beach Leathers did a lot of business in the Bay Area in the '80s and '90s. When I run across a vintage fur that I can't use, I donate them to zoos and other animal organizations like the ASCPA. The homeless dogs and cats and orphaned babies find comfort in snuggling up in a fur, and the rescue operations are glad to have them.

Great finds in the maxi pad bag! 🙃 Did it make you question if you might have thrown out more treasures previously when you were dumping all the bags of paperwork? I wouldn't have wanted to go back and search through all of that! Yikes! That older looking sterling ring is gorgeous! It always makes me laugh at how excited you get at finding change! If I can guarantee that you'll find at least 30 bucks worth of change digging through my SUV, would you clean it out for me? 😁 Always exciting no matter what you find in a locker, I totally get why you're hooked!

It's obvious the person was keeping so much paperwork, and medical oriented documentation, possibly for a future lawsuit or to have documentation to have their nursing home stay subsidized. This women seemed to be keeping meticulous records of whatever medical procedures she had, that also included keeping their hair. Lots of medications cause hair loss, this women could have lost her hair due to cancer treatments. A relative who needed to go into a nursing home, had discarded years of needed tax and financial documents, she then found out she needed *all* the discarded documents in order to have her nursing home stay subsidized. (Long term nursing homes stays are *not covered* by health insurance, only 100 days are covered, many are not aware of this) My relative then had to pay her accountant to print out years worth of financial documents! Most people do keep important paperwork. There *is* a method to some peoples 'madness'!! To others, these situations are considered hoarding. It's also obvious, these items appear to have been stored by someone who had to clean out this woman's home when she entered a nursing home or an assisted living facility. Please, think before judging.
