Sign a petition for a Van Johnson Postage Stamp ~ vanjohnsonstamp.org/petition.h... rears its ugly head between the store manager (Van Johnson) and the new hire (Judy Garland) in the music shop. They had great fun doing this movie - one of the few Garland productions that came in on time and on budget.

Over and over again as she rose at MGM, Judy transitioned old, staid, but beautiful songs into what were at the time swing bangers. This one, Singing in the Rain, A Pretty Girl Milking Her Cow, Swing, Mr. Mendelssohn, Swing… it was what she did, her brand. It allowed her to connect with old audiences and new. She never forgot that lesson, singing the newest songs until her untimely demise.

Lol. I can't stop watching this clip tonight. I love Judy's flair for using her body movements so gracefully, using great movements like quickly twirling when Van forces her to sing fast. I love how she croons to the customer with open arms toward him then hugs herself and sways when she sings "cuddle up and hold me tight." Then she creates more magic by touching Van and singing by him then dancing behind him, still touching his shoulders. Then comically she reaches to turn the music while still touching him. Then she glides over to the customer to finish her slow ballad with arms outstretched. Then, Van pulls her to him with the fast version. Her facial expressions and limp exasperated arm movements are hilarious. Van's huge smile when she is forced to sing it fast is also great. They both have great move movemets. Judy's movemements and expressions when she sings fast with a fast twirling body and arms and hands gracefully swaying to the music, especially that "motorboat" bit when they all sway up, is just too funny. In fact, I think if someone were to view this clip without sound, they would enjoy the comedy and be able to figure out the story. But then they wouldn't experience Judy's glorious angel voice that goes along with that Angel face. Thank you for posting this clip and allowing me to comment so much.

Judy at this time in her career had no singing peer and there were many great around. Her voice was so rich and full of wonderful emotion with superb vibrato.

Judy Garland could really sell a song, couldn't she? Love this particular number...very well done! Thank you for posting!

Because of how cheerful this song is, I love singing it all the time. I especially love the high note Judy gives to end it. She had a way of making middle range notes for an alto sound much higher and richer then they were. It's brilliant.

Ha ha! I particularly like how she's upstaging him here so condescendingly, since for much of the film he strings her along rather cruelly by being her mysterious correspondence boyfriend without her knowing it's actually him. And throughout, he acts cold and prickly in person to her. Of course it all turns out wonderful and happy in the end, though.

Loved this clip of Judy. She is just so....endearing! You just want to hug her and laugh with her, at least I do. Her and Van Johnson have a great chemistry going here. BTW, I loved your "insider" comments on what was going on in Judy's life during this time. She is so pretty in this movie!

She and Van Johnson had the most amazing chemistry in this movie. They are both so funny, and this scene shows such great comedic timing while singing from Judy. I sang this song for an audition once and was told it was such a refreshing change from the normal audition songs. :)

Love everything about this rendition, and the way they play off each other is perfect. But most of all--god, that woman was lovely like an angel. At least on the screen she was. The stuff that dreams are made of indeed!

Judy shows real comedy flair in this movie. She was known for being "difficult" on set but this set was different. Van Johnson was her personal friend and made her laugh and feel special during the shoot. IYou can see this in their chemistry on screen. She often slept on Van's sofa overnight after fighting with her husband Sid Luft. Sometimes, Judy wouyld go up to Van's step son Ned's room during a party to unload her trials and troubles!! I am happy you enjoyed the movie clip.

Judy's being "difficult" on set needs to be defined and considered according to who was making this claim. Her "difficulties" started in the mid 40s due to a number of issues caused by her treatment by the studio that were a combination of the pills they forced onto her and a lot of psychological abuse she endured over the years. She was great an asset to the studio. Yet they did not treat her right, and she knew it. Had she had management they would not have gotten away with overworking and abusing her. They would promise her vacation periods, then call her back to work without a proper rest period. Also, under a savvy manager, she would have garnered a higher salary and stock in Loew's Inc. the parent company of MGM as well as profit participation since she was such a valuable commodity. But that didn't happen. In spite of the stories about Judy's being "difficult," the production on IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME went smoothly. L.B. Mayer called Van Johnson into his office and asked him, "What did you do to Judy?" Perplexed, Van said, "What did I DO to her?" I just told her she was wonderful." All she needed was reassurance and a kind word once in a while, which she rarely got from her Directors. She was never sure that what she was doing was good enough. She was that insecure, which is why she would be late on the set later on. She was so frightened, and it took her time to gather up the courage and strength to go on. But when she did, it was magic, and they usually got what they needed in one take. So in spite of the waiting around, she saved them money in film. And in the long run, the same amount of time would have been taken with other actors doing retakes. So maybe she knew from experience it didn't matter if she was late. She came on when she was ready to perform and did it right the first time.

This is pure brilliance. I'm not sure if I read whether or not buster Keaton helped on this number. Does anyone know if Judy ever incorporated this into her stage act or TV shows? She could have had a lot of fun with whomever was accompanying her on the piano. The audience would have loved it!

@@Orcl1100Absolutely. She even sang some of Jolson's songs BETTER than he did. She did not have to sing out through her nose and corners of her mouth they way Jolson did. She had natural diaphragm control.

It's Liza with a Z! There is a very funny story Liza tells about this scene. In the picture, she is bare bottomed with no little 'dity on to cover her. So Van Johnson is holding her with one hand holding her little baby tush. Liza says to look at her baby face of pure embarrassment and shock at this man holding her bare tushy, and she couldn't wiggle away from him. And Momma Judy was laughing and smiling and singing through her daughter's embarrassment.
