"In The Heights" but it's Asian

Here's our recreation of the "In The Heights" opening but it's a little different.
Directing my friends in this project was an incredible experience. Although we were recklessly inspired fresh off of watching the movie, we sought out ways that we could really make the idea work. In The Heights is indisputably a story about Latino immigrants in the US, so rewriting the lyrics and shifting the narrative was an important step to respecting the source material and recognizing an opportunity for representation. From this, Usnavi became a second generation Chinese American who owns a boba shop.
AAPI stories and actors are among the most underrepresented in Hollywood, with exceptions that are more harmful than constructive: we are a main character's smart sidekick, a fetish, a quirky foreigner, a virus. So, while this video does not represent nearly as many groups as the title warrants (majority of the cast is Chinese), I hope that it would at least shed light on the community I've had the privilege of growing up with.
Original "In The Heights" Opening: • In The Heights - First...

Jeez, I did not expect this to blow up as much as it did. I am so grateful that so many of you felt represented by this and enjoyed it. We started this production about a month ago for our church’s youth film fest. In the end, we spent a total of three weeks writing, shooting, and editing on a $50 budget. I definitely feel some imposter syndrome as the video’s gained popularity. With limited time, we filmed this within our own community and friend groups, so though the final product represented many East Asians, it definitely lacked the South Asian and Indian representation that the title warranted. My hope is to also represent these groups in my future projects, especially since Hollywood hasn’t. This video was very personal to me, as it was like a love letter to the Asian community that had raised me. Kids and parents aiming for success, Bible study groups, lots and lots of boba, and our struggles to maintain our conflicting cultural backgrounds were distinct in our identities. I’m so thankful for Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jon M Chu’s creation that reminds all immigrants to hang their flags up, proclaiming “we belong.”

what I really appreciated about in the heights is that every kind of immigrant can relate at a lot of the key principles. This is why this video works so well and also why the Asian director of Crazy Rich Asians decided to direct it. He pointed out that obviously he doesn’t have the same experiences but he can relate to the immigrant story and having his own “Abuela Claudia” (more like a Lao Yi lol)

Please educate on Asian hate. I’ve encountered more racism from whites, Indians and Asians. I’ve honestly NEVER seen ANY Asian hate! They have been just as evil as white racists! Why do they do this? Is it learned? Is it who they are? Do they do it for acceptance? For me, I don’t think Asians have suffered 🤷🏽‍♀️ when compared to Blacks and Latinos. I don’t want them to suffer either but it is dramatic and unfair to say what they suffer is prevalent. In the case of George Floyd and so many others Asian men/women we’re their participating in hate and inflicting pain. I have never seen anyone bully an Asian person before. Nor would I want them too. I just can’t be quiet with them milking on they suffer too when the truth/facts show otherwise. I agree this was talented and awesome! I agree that no one should be ashamed of where they come from. I think Asian culture is awesome and at times breathtaking. I only wish that more Asians had value and respect for other ethnicities such as Blacks, Latinos, etc… This was not to throw shade. This is just a request to just please be real.

@@Drethyr I don’t hate Asians either. I actually think they are very attractive. I find the men to be gorgeous and the women are pretty. However I have never met an Asian who thinks or states a kind word towards people of the Black/ West Indian/Latina community. NEVER!!!! So 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’ve begun to realize that my love for Asian and Asian culture may not be a good thing. And that makes me sad.

@@fabledlight908 i'm no expert on history, but as far as i understand - the chinese exclusion act pretty much barred all immigration from china, and the eventual successors (Magnuson Act, Hart-Celler Act) held per-country immigration limits, with strong preference for professionals/skilled workers. If you only let a limited number of (east) asians into the country, and you only let educated professionals in, they'll be much more highly educated on average. education is certainly highly prized in many asian cultures, but the 'educated model minority' stereotypes in the US came about by artificially (legislatively?) induced means.

Not only is it visually stunning, but I heavily relate to the immigrant experience depicted in In The Heights, so this really just hit the sweet spot. As someone who has done major projects. If it came down to a Black person or an Asian they ALWAYS choose Asian. Asians also white appropriate. Then they tear down other races to be accepted and to fit in. They include whites in their kdramas dramas jdramas, etc… but they exclude blacks on purpose. Yet they steal our culture of hiphop, style, R&B, and so forth with ease and no conviction.

A rewrite that manages to feel distinct from the original while holding on to the almost sentimental feel to the song in how it paints a picture of a community that’s well-estabished and just hasn’t been recognized by the world yet. It's crazy how much this version does justice to the play and what I imagined this song would look like in the movie (I haven't seen it yet) after hearing the track. I love love love how you all have managed to keep it relevant to the community and the lived experience of Chinese immigrants. As a fan of musicals, this was amazing to see unfold.

Rapping and Repping Jesus. Man, you gotta love to see this. Had a smile on my face. Enjoying the rhythm, beat, n pace. With all the little details, you never let it derail. You kept it true to the movie; fresh, funky, n groovy. Goku's vibing, I'm just sayin', this song hits like super saiyan. I appreciate you if you read these lines. I promise I won't take up much more of your time. I know I'm not the best rapper in the world, but I wanted to let my untrained voice be heard. I said it once, I'll say it again. I didn't have the vocal range for Miss Saigon, but I knew I was going to get the part of Connie Wong in A Chorus Line...because I was the only Asian who auditioned. I really loved that they did this! The concept behind the song works as well with representing Asian American's as it does with Latinos. I'm ngl, I wish they changed the lyrics a bit more and made it more original. There was so much opportunity and so much more that could've made this song more true to Asian culture. Regardless, the videography was really professional, and I could tell yall had fun! Hope you can do a remake someday, that would be cool.
