@@damianstarks3338 What makes Le Chiffre a great villain isn't just how menacing he is, but how realistic he is. Le Chiffre isn't an all-powerful criminal mastermind, like many Bond villains before him. He requires the financial backing of a powerful organization in order to pull off his schemes, which means that if he does something out of line with his money, he's in big trouble. Unsurprisingly, when he uses his clients' money to short airline stocks and it backfires, he's in big trouble and has to resort to holding a poker game, in order to recoup his losses. Once his plan to save himself begins to fall apart, he has to resort to more desperate measures. What makes him scary is that he's a coward. He's not as powerful as he thinks and he knows it. As such, he is willing to do anything to save himself.

4:39 That's exactly it. Le Chiffre was overconfident and didn't consider the possibility that his plan could fail.

I wouldn't say evil intent, but yes. He is a "less is more" villain. No extravagance or lasers coming out his arse, just an animal need to live. He is driven by his need to survive the situation he's found himself in. Desperation makes people more prone to extreme lengths which we see in Le Chiffre's character, there's little he won't do to get what he wants if it means he'll come out unharmed. he is by no means a good person, but nothing we see from him in this film is cruelty for cruelty's sake. Not active malice due to his own sadism, it's desperation driving him to the acts he commits. He is reaching the end of his string in terms of debt piling up, whilst it may have originally been greed that got him surrounded by such violent people, it isn't his motivation by the end. It's a carnal, unfiltered need to survive. Unflinching in those he kills or maims to live. He lacks any regard for others if it means he survives. I honestly think towards the end of the film he would have surrendered to MI5 and revealed all his secrets if it meant he'd live. However at the end he was far too backed into a corner, panicking and not thinking clearly due to his distress. When he was trying to get the password from Bond, all his focus was getting the money that would provide him an out.
