Great video Brian! Yes, analog summing does make sense. I think I"ll be using either stem summing or all tracks analog summing like you explained. This is probably the best way if not the only one, to get that royal, fat and shiny sound!

Thanks! I normally stem mix through the console which I have shown in other videos. I'm sure there are benefits to doing it using other methods, but the key seems to be to not depend on the analog sum to "save" your mix - using it as an enhancer to a great mix is where it is at from my brief experience.

It really does add such a nice warmth it. Kind of an overall cohesion to all the different instruments and takes of a bit of that “digital edge” (for lack of a better term) that you don’t even realize is there until it’s gone. That is for sharing! I just got a Signature 12MTK so I’m going to be giving this a try.

Hi Brian! After I config the channels send and RTN USB, can I mix the songs using the faders? I meam, control each instrument level independent?
@BrianBuckalew
@BrianBuckalew 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, although you are limited to the number of channels on the console. So, if you have a stereo drum track, bass, vocal, guitar and keys, then you can mix each track on an isolated channel. This is why I tend to mix in the box (ITB) and then stem mix back out to the console prior to analog summing back into my DAW.

Ciao Brian,thanks for your video. What i feel from your audio is more deep sound with more punch and it's what i'm going to achieve with my music and label (techno/house genre). I'm going to give a try the analogue summing but i will try with soundcraft epm8. Not sure if it's better analogue circuit than signature but it's the one that i have in my shop so i can try without spend money ;) My question is : in my daw (ableton) i have lot of tracks that are in stereo; do you think I have to go out as mono? I mean: kick stereo into mono out connection to a jack in the mixer ..because the channel on the mixer are always intended as mono. Is a good idea? :)

I am not familiar with the Soundcraft epm8, but I would try to route your audio into a stereo channel if possible, or at least a stereo pair (two mono channels panned hard left and right).

Hey, I'm using Pro Tools with a Clarett 8Pre+ as my interface and a Focusrite Pro 40 for extra inputs and outputs. When I use more than one insert on a single track, I have to go back to Focusrite Control and mute the last input track because it creates feedback or chorus effect. Is this normal, or are my connections wrong?

Hi Brian.. nice video! The console mix is deeper wider.. much better with analog summing. Question.. if you dropped all those input sliders on the console a bit lower.. would you have less noise. Would that be worth doing? Or do you find it's quiet enough as is..

Brian, great video and fantastic track. Question for you regarding the console usb routing ability. Are you able to add plugin effects on a track in your DAW and hear those effects on the track through the console before the track is recorded and played back. In other words, say I am using a compressor plugin, can I hear that when simply writing the track through the board? Hope that makes sense. Thanks in advance!

@BrianBuckalew
@BrianBuckalew 6 жыл бұрын
You create a new stereo audio track inside your DAW. The input to the audio track will be Analogue 23-24 from the console. This is your print return back into your DAW. Arm this new audio track for recording and print your console’s mix/sum onto your stereo audio track. I always check my signal’s gain going back I to the DAW fro. analogue 23-24 to make sure I am level matching the signal that came out of my DAW prior to mixing on the console. The reason is there is several dBs of headroom built into the console that will reduce the output of the audio when you send it back into your DAW. Hope that helps!

Thank you, Brian! l wasnt sure if using a mid-grade mixer such as the one that l own would be advantageous to sum through.. Your demonstration clearly shows the benefits and that a $five-figure console is not necessary to impart good analog sound!

At least not in my opinion. There are always going to be individuals who will swear you have to have the best converters and the highest quality analog gear to even attempt to sum your mixes. I have noticed most of the people who make this argument are owners of mastering studios and high-end analog studios, so we are basically taking $$$ out of their hands by doing it ourselves. lol

+Hi Brian, I've been looking at the Soundcraft Signature 12 MTK for mixing and summing from my DAW, i was just wondering is it possible to send the tracks to the mixer via USB from any DAW? I make beats on an MPC and would want to mix each drum track on the soundcraft mixer from either Studio one or the MPC software, would that be possible or do the tracks have to be recorded from the Mixer first? Thanks, Alex
@BrianBuckalew
@BrianBuckalew 6 жыл бұрын
You can route audio into the Soundcraft Signature console via USB from any DAW. All you need is to select an Analogue channel (let's say Analogue 1/2 for a stereo send) inside your DAW and then enable USB RTN on that same channel on the console. The audio from your DAW will then pass through the console and allow you to add EQ, Lexicon effects, panning, etc. or just act as an analogue sumer for your entire mix. You can open up any session and route to the Signature series consoles - it doesn't have to have been recorded on the console previously.

Only a stereo return to the DAW is available, so you would have to print each track back in succession. You could also print a stereo sum of your mix, which is more of the way it was meant to be used.

2 questions 1: are you going out from the mixer to an analog recorder or going back into your interface to get your final wav file? If going back into your interface/daw do you notice a reduction of quality? 2: Do you feel this method gives a better result vs the stems/instrument grouping method or the whole track method?
@BrianBuckalew
@BrianBuckalew 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Adam - thanks for watching and for your great questions. 1) I am routing the audio from the DAW into the console and then creating print tracks inside of the DAW to capture the analog summed signal. I then export this printed audio track out as my final pre-mastered analog summed mix down. It sounds just as good to me in the mix down as it does going through my headphones prior to returning to the DAW. 2) I prefer using stems - tracks 1-2 are for my Drums, tracks 3-4 are for my Bass, tracks 5-6 are for my Guitars (usually acoustic), tracks 7-8 are for Guitars 2 (always electric), tracks 9-10 are for my Guitar leads, tracks 11-12 are for my Vocals (lead and BGVs), tracks 13-14 are for Synths & Strings, and tracks 15-16 are for my DAW's effect auxes. All tracks go to Group 1-2 except Vocals (they go to Group 3-4). This gives me one more level of control over my Vocals to get them to sit on top of the mix perfectly (or removed from the mix altogether).

@BrianBuckalew
@BrianBuckalew 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Benson. The Soundcraft Signature console is an audio interface. It is a true hybrid mixer with both an analog console and digital interface built into one unit. All of the information about noise ratio can be found on Soundcraft’s website. Also, recently one of the developing engineers of the Signature series console showed up on Gearslutz online forum and shared some useful info on the Ghost preamps that are on this console. You can find it by searching their forum for Soundcraft Signature console.

The Aux outs are TRS connections. The MST L & MST R are XLR connectors that go out to my monitors. Analog 23/24 is the "tape return" from the console into your DAW via USB. The way to route channels through the Aux send is on each of the channels Aux send knob. Each channel has an Aux 1, Aux 2, Aux 3, Aux 4, and Aux 5 level knob that allows you to send how much of the channels input into each of the Aux sends.

Hello Brian. Thank you for your video on routing audio to the Soundcraft Signature 22MTK analog mixer board which is what I have and I love this board. I am still trying to figure out ways to utilize more of the Signature mixer console than the mixer from my Studio One 6 DAW in the box. I do understand the concept on how to route my tracks from inside S1 6 to my MTK22 board. My question to you is how would I use the eq and the fx from the MTK22 console and putting it back to my DAW instead of me having to utilize the fx, eq inserts on my DAW? Is it feasible or would it be beneficial for me to do that? I am trying to record vocal tracks and other instruments from my Signature mixer using the eq, effects as recording, however when I play back it the recording it plays back dry with no effects. Is there something I’m missing in this process? Any advise? Thanks so much Eric Medina
@BrianBuckalew
@BrianBuckalew Жыл бұрын
Hello Eric - thank you very much for watching and taking the time to leave your kind words. Regarding your question: Yes, you are missing something with the Soundcraft Signature series hybrid console. They are not designed to impart any EQing or Effects while tracking. This is strictly used for monitoring while tracking or playing live (this is also a GREAT live event console). In order to get the board's Lexicon Effects and/or Sapphyre EQ onto a track or tracks, you must utilize the USB RTN button to route audio back through individual channels from your DAW and then print them back into your DAW onto a new audio track. I have videos on my channel that show how to do this. Please let me know if you need any additional help. Feel free to email me at bbuck822@gmail.com for a deep dive if required.

Hi Brian, this is awesome....I have a Soundcraft 16 in the studio and decided to try this out. It sounded great, but the board seemed to add volume - everything set at unity resulted in a louder mix through the board. In fact, I had to lower the console’s master fader by about 10 dB to prevent clippings Was my ITB too loud to begin with? What gives? Happy new year and thanks for the videos!
@BrianBuckalew
@BrianBuckalew 6 жыл бұрын
It could be that you were either sending too hot of a signal into the console, or maybe even a doubling of tracks through to the MST OUT - what I mean is sending the signal to more than one output such as to the Groups (1-2, 3-4) as well as out to the MST at the same time. This would double the signal going to the MST OUT. I am only guessing, but that would be what I would think was happening.

Hmmm....I think Inhave everything routed properly, but I noticed something interesting...the Signature 16’s gain pots have ‘10’ as the lowest setting, but looking at pics online I noticed the Signature 22 (I think that’s your board?) the gain pots go down to 5. I wonder if that’s got something to do with it?

This is the built in headroom that allows for your analog summed mix to then be mastered. Mastering engineers will tell you to give them headroom to work with and the Soundcraft Signature series consoles take that into consideration when summing. You can push this level hotter with a passive monitor controller like used in this video. It allows you to push the console while reducing the signal to your monitors without changing the quality of the audio you are monitoring.

@@BrianBuckalew Im actually using a Mackie mixer for the analog summing. Nothing fancy but I love the results Ive been getting. Do you think the way I boost the signal using the preamp gain is a practical solution? Or would it better to get passive monitor controller? I just want to know what my best options are. Thanks for the reply
@BrianBuckalew
@BrianBuckalew 4 жыл бұрын
The reason I use a passive monitor controller is to decrease the output level to my studio monitors. If I did not use one, then while I am printing my analog summed mix, I would get very loud levels to my studio monitors that make it almost unbearable. I’m not sure if your Mackie is setup like the Soundcraft Signature series consoles, but if they are then the passive monitor control is certainly a great way to get high levels into your analog summed mix without high output levels to your studio monitors. In regards to your preamp question I think it is great to use your analog preamps in this fashion. I have made videos showing just this exact type of routing and the benefits it gives for both adding an extra touch of analog warmth as well as a controlled amount of level boost without even touching your faders. I can say the best way to proceed would be to move forward with experimenting with multiple ways and find the one that not only gives you the best results, but also works best for your workflow. Make it truly your own style!

Yes - that is actually one of the main functions of this console. It is meant to allow someone to record audio into their DAW, add digital processing and mixing inside of their DAW and then send their ITB mix back out to the console for final analog processing/mixing/summing - and finally send this finished analog sum back into your DAW as a printed analog summed mix.

Just make sure you get the multi-track version. They have both a stereo and a multi-track. The multi-track allows you to record all of the channels via USB into your DAW. The standard stereo console only sends a stereo feed back to your DAW. That is of course if you only need a stereo track. This is a digital interface (USB) along with an analog desk - a hybrid console. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

For me, I have purchased a lot of gear over the last 10-12 years and once I got the Soundcraft Signature series console I was very pleased with what I was hearing. I found something that allowed my completely ITB mixes to come alive in a way I had previously thought was only possible in a large/expensive studio. May i put in a suggestion..... Since you have 6stereo pairs for summing purposes, a better option would be to route them to the analogue channels based on the frequency curve example sub, low, lowmid, mid, himid, hi and donot add any eq initially and afert listening, probably adjust any eq prior to printing the track back in the daw

I would not use reason's sequencer or mixer, just the rack. I bet that would get a totally different sound and sequencing. I was going to get a Mackie mixer and an rme with 4 adat in and out and a behringer digital to analog. But that would cost significantly more than this mixer who has it all in one. In short I want to have the old school way of working without spending a fortune on midi hardware.

I returned mine unfortunately. The 10 dB drop from summing on the console to bouncing to channel 23/24 into pro tools was the deal breaker. The drivers for windows and pro tools compatibility was less than stable as well. The board is amazing. I even thought about running the master out to another interface I liked it so much. I thought about testing on a mac but didnt feel like changing my entire setup just for the interface.

I can not speak on Windows' drivers or the console's behavior in a Windows environment as I have only used it on an Apple PC. Did you not attempt to use a passive monitor control? This nullifies the built-in headroom (10dB +/-) of the console and allows you to print your mixes/stems as hot as you'd like.

Surely the stem method is better? The reason you can't touch the EQ on this method is because you have all kind of different sounds sharing different frequencies going through each channel, seems no real order other than the random nature of which I have tracks arranged
@BrianBuckalew

In my opinion, yes. I am merely trying to show the many ways we have of processing audio. If you had a larger analog console with excellent A/D and D/A converters then this method would be very advantageous. As it stands with the Signature series consoles, stem mixing is my preferred method of analog summing.

Brian! Okay, I’ve just watched this video twice and I must be missing something, and I think it’s the point. What benefit is realized doing this Yoad’s single channel way vs the other way, i.e., for example sending all 4 guitars to a single stereo pair? Is it only because Yoad is 100% in the box and the other technique is partially in the box where you can do some EQing on the mixer as well?
@BrianBuckalew

He was showing the value of having an analog console where each channel has its own distinct characteristics. Brian Buckalew Thank you for the reply Brian, and being inspired by watching your various vids on hybrid mixing, I decided to dive right in and bought a Soundcraft Signature 22 MTK, which I just received yesterday. My next question is not so much having to do with mixing, but connecting the board to my computer. I currently have a Tascam US4x4 audio interface connected to my computer and Ableton and from there I have 2 sets of monitor speakers with a monitor controller. How do I connect the mixer? Would I connect the main outputs from the mixer to a couple of ins on my audio interface, then route accordingly in Live? The user docs don’t cover the actual connection at all. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!
@BrianBuckalew
@BrianBuckalew 5 жыл бұрын
The Soundcraft Signature series console is both an analog console and a digital interface all built into one unit. You would connect the Signature console to your computer via the USB port. I recommend getting a USB cable meant for audio, and not a store-bought office USN cable commonly used to connect printers to a computer. Next, you will connect your monitors to the MST L and MST R outputs of the Signature series console. If you are on a Mac then the Core Audio drivers already work once you plugin the console via USB to your computer. All you have to do is set up the console properly inside of your DAW. I have various videos to show how I was able to get it working in Pro Tools, Logic, Ableton Live, and Cubase. If you have a Windows computer, then you will to download the driver from the Soundcraft website, install and set it up inside the DAW of your choice. You can set aside your Tascam US4x4 and save it as a backup in case you ever have to send the Soundcraft Signature series console out for servicing or repair. FYI: I have had no issues at all with my Sig22mtk console, but I kept my previous audio interface as a backup just in case.

Brian Buckalew Ahhhhhh... I think I’m getting it. So the audio interface is no longer even needed at this point? So the entire hookup is just a high quality USB cable and connecting my monitor controller to the main outs on the mixer. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how the audio interface figured in. Well I’m off to do some connecting now. Thanks for your great vids.

@BrianBuckalew

This is not a zero latency interface (yet another reason why I added the StudioLive 32SC to my studio), but you can track back with plugins without noticeable latency depending on how powerful your system is, how big your session is, and how processor-needy the plugins you are trying to use are.

Are getting noise from your mixer console if so how do you fix it
@BrianBuckalew
@BrianBuckalew 2 жыл бұрын
Check your cables, including the USB cable you have connected. Make sure you have a dedicated outlet if possible. This will reduce a lot of EF noise just by ensuring nothing is connected to the breaker to the outlet your console is connected to. Buy a power conditioner like a Furman. You are using an analog console so there is going to be a certain amount of noise introduced into your signal path. If it is too much try using a booster or preamp prion to the console. This will increase your signal prior to hitting the Ghost preamp which will allow you to reduce the noise floor.

Hello Rafael. My experience with analog gear is limited to this Soundcraft console. I have been ITB since I started recording back in 2006 and only started to explore analog summing about 3 years ago. When I heard about the release of this console I wanted to get it specifically for the analog summing capabilities it offered at a fraction of the cost of many analog summing boxes like the Dangerous 2 Bus. So, although I have heard many great things about the Dangerous 2 Bus, I have never used one before and my opinion can only be that the Signature series consoles from Soundcraft do a great job of analog summing my ITB mixes.

Console sounds like it has more gain than the itb example, throwing me off for the comparison, more gain will give an impression of everything you described. I believe you when you say you didn’t touch anything but regardless you may have to attenuate it to actually get a proper A/B comparison. Still would love to have a decent console for analog summing though 👍

Interesting Brian. Hard to tell through the video but what difference in sound do you find running this way through the board. Does it just widen your mixes or give a certain depth and warmth? After doing it this way. Which way do you find you actually prefer working? I would think sending the stems then having the sapphire eq and using it may give it a little extra something special.
@BrianBuckalew
@BrianBuckalew 7 жыл бұрын
+Jp Huh I definitely prefer stem mixing out to the console as shown in previous videos - the Sapphyre EQ is just too good not to utilize. This was merely to show another approach. I could definitely hear a difference in the mix after it passed through the Signature console - warmth, depth and even punchier low end. I'm sorry I was unable to capture that through the video, but I thought it was worth sharing with everyone.

Channels 1-14 are mono Input channels, and 15-22 are in stereo pairs (15/16, 17/18, etc.). You can record on all channels simultaneously as long as you understand that not all channels have the same type of connectors - for example - channel 21/22 does not have an XLR Input.

The PFL button(s) show the channel whose PFL button is depressed in the master stereo bus metering section and also sends the input channel's signal to the Solo Bus (headphone output) pre-fade, pre-mute, post EQ. The PFL button is a cumulative selection, meaning multiple buttons pressed will add more signal to the Solo Bus (headphone output) and master stereo bus meter. If you have a channel whose PFL button is depressed and you are not motoring any signal through that channel, then your monitoring may not be as expected. You know when a PFL button has been depressed by observing a red AFL/PFL light is lit.

Great video - thanks for the demo. It indeed sounds much better with the analog summing. For this demo you didn't add any effects or plugins however - does it still sound better when all the effects and plugins (reverbs, delays, compressors, etc.) are engaged in the daw? I.e. will it work well as a final mastering stage after the whole mix is done? And another question: is there any advantage in recording the individual instruments to the daw already through the analog console and then mixing ITB, instead of analog summing at the end? Some consoles have direct outs for example. Thanks!
@BrianBuckalew
@BrianBuckalew 3 жыл бұрын
Yes - it can work well as a mastering mixer. Yes - you can add plenty of headroom to your mix by tracking through the console and then mixing ITB. Hello Saul. That really depends. I would probably say yes in most cases, but you may want to have the ability to create analog summed mixes and the Soundcraft Signature series mixers would allow that. I myself own a UAD Satellite Quad (nothing compared to your Apollo) and it works well allowing me to mix ITB with UAD plugins and then sum back through the console for that final analog polish. I would really say it is not necessary in your case, but you may want to have the versatility on-hand that these consoles provide.

Hey Brian this is a great video! Thank you. Your videos have really helped. I found a video where a guy does a sine wave meter test with the audio coming in the analogue mixer and the audio coming out of just the daw and shows the result. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/abJ6fJl8ucmsYmg.html Just a question, I have the 12 mtk version and wanted to know is there a way to re-record the tracks of the USB return individually with the eqs? I understand you can record the summed out in a stereo track but how can you have them individually tracked? Thank you and love your work.
@BrianBuckalew
@BrianBuckalew 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes - you have to print a track at a time. I actually show this process in a few of my videos. So, you would run your mix through the console and then inside your DAW create new audio tracks for each track you want to print through the console. Then a track at a time each new audio track receives the signal from Analog 23/24 (Print Return from console) by soloing and printing that track. One-by-one. I normally do this for live drums that are tracked in my "less than optimal" studio space. I'll go through each track - Kick, Snare, Toms, etc. EQ'ing, panning, and printing what I have done on the console on each drum track.

Brian Buckalew Awesome great thanks! Also with effects, is there a way when summing tracks to have different effects for each track. Eg. you want a reverb on track one and a delay on track two. Or would you have to do it separately re record each track with the different effect.
@BrianBuckalew
@BrianBuckalew 3 жыл бұрын
Nope. You have the choice of two separate effects with the 22mtk. You have an effects send on each channel and that’s how you decide which track get what effect and how much of it.

Because the console doesn’t have the plugins I use inside my DAW.

This console is meant to be a hybrid, where you record through they console, mix ITB and then mix back through the console to put a final polish on it. That’s the design of it - it is NOT a traditional Analogue console nor is it just a summing box or audio interface. It is all of these.
@mariaulfah2813

Brian Buckalew That hybrid theory is kinda new to me. Allrights then.

Unless you have great AD DA converters (Aurora Lynx level), this will just introduce noise and aliasing artifacts, due to the AD DA conversion taking place. Plus you can't compare the Neve's circuitry to that of this Soundcraft mixer. I'm a big fan of Soundcraft and own this mixer myself, but this is merely snake oil instead of summing.

Thanks for your feedback. What you are mentioning is why I use a top-of-the-line USB cable from AudioQuest which helps eliminate some of what you mentioned. I am not saying this removes all artifacts but it greatly improves on the quality of what is sent through it over, let's say a standard USB cable. Now, we can sit here and discuss what is the absolute best gear to get the highest quality you can buy, or we can find ways to maximize the gear we have to get the best results we can for our budget - that's what I feel like I have done in my studio.

Man heat video. But you have to get rid of that cheap interface that’s is attached to that console . But the console itself is geat!! Never buy a mixer with a interface usb attached you will take a sonic hit on your music

Thank you, Emanuel for watching and leaving your comment. I beg to differ, but can certainly appreciate what you are saying. I don’t lose any quality in my studio especially since I purchased a high quality USB cable. It actually is similar to if you buy a crappy USB cable to transfer data from an external SSD to a computer. The cheap cable will give you super slow transfer speeds. The USB audio cable I am using has a similar effect in my studio by giving me optimal data transfer rates with minimal jitter. I also get higher track counts before latency begins to be introduced when compared to lower quality USB cables.

I understand Roy - except there are plenty of studios around the world that work in this fashion. I was merely trying to show my subscribers alternate methods. Not everyone has the same workflow and many people want to know how many methods there are - it could actually lead to someone discovery their own method (imagine that).
