@@watcher05er Honestly speaking, this is not set to be a blockbuster movie, this is pure art of cinema. Films like this are not made to gain money, sell merchandise, create numerous sequels and spin-offs, and make more and more revenue selling another idiotic franchise to teenagers that never grow up. This movie is what a cinema should be. The director's statement and piece of art, not a piece of commercial shit.

Agreed. The first time I saw it, I fell asleep and I thought it was tedious and boring... but then I realized I remembered vividly the images, the sounds, the story... I always go back to it. It has something very powerful that I cannot explain...

But now, I think I look back with more appreciation now because of how real and grounded the whole movie was. Like legit, I felt the heaviness, and a sense of loss, as these two people just never act on their feelings. There is this dynamic of a tug-of-war of wanting to root for them but you suck in a breath and hiss to yourself when you remember they're married, and this movie makes you feel it intensely and unforgivingly. And the way the film just shows this separation with such cinematography and beautiful shots is an understated miracle that a lot of people will not get until they appreciate this more. Like, this movie actually made me understand why people may cheat on their spouses, in a way.

@@mehrdad2685I saw 2046 first, and I abhorred how much of an asshole Chow is to this young lover of his. But then when you see this, you understand. He never got over this woman, because he did not even get the chance to start anything much more end it.

Ummm.. no. My fam emigrated from HK to the US in 1964. The tallest building was 12 stories. Shantytowns on the hills that get washed out every typhoon. Always the fear of the Communist Red Horde coming right across the border. Everyone can’t wait to get to the US or Australia. Great if a sailor on furlough; but, yuk if you can’t get out.

The whole movie was shot in Bangkok lah

Look up the 1965-1967 Hong Kong riots, it was a wild, violent period. There was a real danger of it turning into a Maoist state. Most of the population were dirt poor. Even these relatively well off, nicely dressed middle-class people are forced to live in subdivided apartments. Things started improving rapidly in the 1970s, and perhaps the 1980s and 1990s were the best times to be in HK. In the early 2000s it was starting to fizzle out.

@@detlefeilers5531 many interviews in English by Tony and Maggie Chong in Cannes explained it. It's all over KZfaq. Wong ka Wei is known for directing without a script. He did it in HAPPY TOGETHER prior to this movie also the first LGBTQ Cantonese movie set in Argentina

@@Clarencito Yes, I'm a student of Film studies. I'm especially into East Asian cinema and now I'm working on my BA thesis about latest Korean cinema, so now I have to focus on that and try to catch up with new films of other Asian countries, but it's good to see that classics like Wong Kar-wai are still admired and I love returns to his films and look at video essays, analyzes etc. Anyway, keep it up and good luck!

Probably because not everyone lived a love story like these but can imagine how is it, but almost everyone suffered an heartbroken so you can relate to 2046 more closely
