This was a great choice Guys . This is a terrific album , and more people should check it out. The Gary Moore comparisons to Jeff Beck's fusion music around this time is very appropriate . So sadly missed .

Often stated that my two favorite Jazz fusion bands are Colosseum II and Weather Report, so fully on board with this episode once it was uploaded. While my favorite songs off "War Dance" are 'Put It That Way', 'The Inquisition', and 'Star Maiden / Mysterioso / Quasar'.

I am a big fan of this record. What attracted me to it originally was the cover. I love that you chose this album to talk about. A very good, overlooked album.

Great fusion record! "Fighting talk" reminds me of Stanley Clarke " Lopsy Lu".

Looking forward to this Album Study ITPS gentlemen. Listening to the first song, Wardance, and this song rocks hard with great guitar and keyboard virtuosity. Thank you for your expert insights and picking a more obscure prog/prog fusion album.

These guys played our students' union (Sheffield UK - never knew Sheffield USA existed until I checked, _and_ it's the home of Muscle Shoals) touring this album and they were awesome. Had Electric Savage on vinyl but never managed to find the CD for a decent price until the twofer Chad's got came out. Looking forward to listening to War Dance. Like Ken I don't quite see them as fusion, for me more a type of instrumental hard rock. It's amazing to think that bands such as these were pretty mainstream back in the day, enough to warrant a concert on the BBC - I taped the radio concert on cassette but it's long since gone. Also amazing is the diversity of acts they had, on one of the KZfaq clips the presenter is saying that was Richard Digance - I mean, look him up, could he be more different. Saw him live a couple of times, very entertaining but not someone I'd buy an album by.

Awesome pick George. I've only known of this album and band for about a year but getting to hear from all these diverse perspectives helps me appreciate the music so much more.

Great album I remember back in day trying to play those songs on guitar were technically quite difficult , love Gary Moore as a guitarist he knew he was very good , could be a difficult man to work with that's for sure! seen him back in the day with Thin Lizzy then G Force 2 times as supporting band on UK whitesnake tour! Excellent show chaps. I would like to mention a movie / video on youtube called "Jazz Rock and Marriage 1979" It is on the Jon Hiseman channel. As was mentioned on the show, Jon Hiseman was married to the saxophonist Barbara Thompson (both now sadly have died) The video deals with their family life together, rehearsals and performance. It is excellent stuff. This video deals with a time that has passed and a music that (may have) passed. I cannot recommend this enough. Keep up the good work chaps. Love as always

Really enjoyed this guys. Got this in 1978 at the tender age of 17, and have loved it ever since. Massively underrated compared to RTF, Weather Report etc, as are Brand X - maybe Unorthodox Behaviour one for a future study...

In my first band Meltdown I was tasked with choosing the songs and we did Fighting Talk. Of course nobody knew what that was we could’ve told the crowd we wrote it lol. The Inquisition is my favorite track. Luis is correct about Gary’s drinking problem. He sounds drunk on Castles.

Great album that is underrated

Hello everyone, thanks for the content and thanks for the show Pete and everybody, I'll be tuning in tonight. I like all three of the Colosseum II band but I prefer War Dance and Electric Savage more than the very first one although I still like Strange New Flesh as well. Overall, I favor the instrumental tracks over the ones with the vocalist and I also prefer the more flat-out jazz-fusion-esque compositions, but it's some very ecclectic music, not boring to me and worth being in my collection. Thanks again, peace out ! : )

The catalogs of Gary Moore , Don Airey, Neil Murray run deep. A great overlooked Album because of their other projects or bands they played in.

War Dance and Electric Savage are two great albums from this version of the band around this time. Fantastic jazz/rock fusion. I wish Moore had done more. These and 3 tracks off Back On The Streets and some with Cozy Powell. A sadly missed genius.

I saw the Colosseum in the 70’s at, Reading Festival I own some cds 💿 and a dvd by them. Colosseum 2 I still have ever heard anything by them, after all these years. Gary Moore I saw with Thin Lizzy, a truly excellent player, I have to say Blues for Jimi DVD 📀 is an absolute must buy, get it you will not be disappointed.

Reading the liner notes for my 2016 2-fer, and it states The band repaired to Morgan Studio in the late summer of 77 to make the groups third album War Dance !

Ken, I have a boot of BBM playing Paris in '94. As you'd expect, lots of Cream covers and Moore does them justice.

Gary Moore went back to Thin Lizzy when asked (eg. When Brian Robertson was injured). There's an interview somewhere with Scott Gorham where he says the reason GM left the US tour was that the rest of the band weren't being professional enough! Although GMs time with Thin Lizzy was great (Black Rose is one of my favourite albums + and the concert in Sydney Australia was great) he wasn't the right fit for the band and wanted to be his own man. The concert he organised in Phil's memory (One Night in Dublin is available on DVD - really good). Ken mentioned his time in BBM - there are other live performances eg "At Germany 1993" and another outdoor one, not sure where (search for City of Gold Live - it's the one where he's in a waistcoat!) - they're worth checking out on KZfaq.

The last time Gary Moore walked out of Thin Lizzy in the middle of a major US tour in July 1979. He got so pissed off about the excessive drug use in the band! I love half of the first Colosseum ll, 1976, and both of the 1977-78 albums! (:

I enjoyed this album more than I think I do some other fusion albums. Moore seems to give this album some kick that I think other fusion albums lack from the guitar. Favorite track would Last Exit. I think it is an epic and to-the-point way to end the album and as Ken said “this is an inspired pick!”

I don''t get all the hate for Castles! Have loved this album since 1978 when I saw Colosseum II on the BBC Sight and Sound tv/radio programme, one of the first albums I ever got. Only in recent times I've been listening to some Return To Forever and Stanley Clarke albums that I can clearly hear the influences. 10 out of 10 album.

Cozy Powell over the top has Gary and Don, some great tracks on that 👍🏻

I saw Gary with Lizzy in 78, but I had no idea who he was at the time. I was expecting to see Robertson.

I was always aware of Gary Moore since Still Got the Blues came out. Think I really got into him when he played on Cozy Powell's albums as I really dug Sunset, Killer and The Blister, just to name a few. And I from the Electric Savage album I first listened to off a Rainbow Family compilation album not knowing till years later that it would be Moore playing guitar, and ironically around the same time that I'd finally get to check out the C-II albums which I enjoy immensely! Still need to check out the Variations album however, and I do hope that Esoteric will remaster Electric Savage in the foreseeable future...

I think of this as fusion, not prog but it’s a great partner album to Electric Savage - I’ve had them both from back in the day and they have always been favourites of mine :)

Luis totally hit the nail on the head saying Moore was always late to the party throughout his career. Flight of the Snow Moose = Scatterbrain 3 yrs later. Parisienne Walkways = Europa 2yrs later. So many ideas are lifted off of RTF, Brand X, Beck on the Colosseum catalogue. He was late to the hard rock/metal scene and sounded 5 years out of date. Same with the Blues, tho I am really glad he found success there. Awesome diverse player, just not a pioneer and with no true direction.

Late othe party due to work commitments however George has picked one of my all time favourite albums, bought from a local record shop when it came out back in 77 ( dont know why - it was just one of those things that happened, could have been the cover?) and one of those albums I have listened to more times than I care to remember but which never gets boring. For a long time I used to skip Castles but I can live with it now, and it is that type of song that for some reason they had to put on an album, Rivers on Electric Savage is a bit better though - though it could have been at Gary Moore's insistence due to Song for Donna on his solo album Back on the Streets, which is half an almost Colosseum 2 record with SImon Phillips filling Hiseman's stool - possibly one of the only drummers around at the time who really could. On Back on the Streets since getting into fusion back in the early 2000s I tend to think of flight of the Snow Moose as having more of a McLaughlin/ Mahavishnu vibe. As with Pete Gary Moore is one of my all time favourite guitarists, and while I love his hard rock period my favourite period of his is this one with Col 2. And not forgetting Moore's appearances on some of Cozy Powell's solo albums - e.g. Killer on Over the top with Jack Bruce on bass and Don Airey on keys.And of course Don Airey's contributions to these Col 2 albums was immense. Ken's right about his solo albums all well worth getting and with a bit of progginess here and there - check out Right Arm Overture from All Out. If you want to get the first Col 2 album Strange New Flesh go for the expanded edition with a whole disc full of unreleased and live tracks.

Really like the album - I'm much more accepting of Gary's vocals, so never skip Castles - Similarly with Rivers on Electric Savage - the notes for that say it was recorded "Live" at the end of a tour. It's worth checking out the Sights and Sounds concert mentioned on KZfaq. Glad Ken also mentioned Grinding Stone by Gary Moore Band (I tend to think of this as his first solo album rather than Back on the Streets) - this is more of a transition from Skid Row, and I love Sail Across The Mountain (more GM vocals!).

Saw him play with Greg lake after show my friend asked Gary Moore if he stole his licks from Jon McLaughlin....he said NO.....he stole them from Jeff Beck and he stole them from John McLaughlin!!!!

Andy Pyle was on bass from 74-75 before Murray. Keith Airey was only in the band a few months at the end of 78. Also Moore's Back on the Streets was kind of half a Colosseum II record.

I bought War Dance and Dregs: Industry Standard in a record store the same day in the 80s. Up to this day I still don’t know which one I like the most. Totally amazing album War Dance! Later on I bought Valentyne Suite and got knocked out by Colosseum I too. So I purchased every album of the band I & II. Strange New Flesh has got negative reviews but I must be one of the 8 people on Earth who love this album with vocals and everything. Jon Hiseman has to be the most underrated drummer of all times.

I think 6 of the 8 tracks are very good, Castles is horrible and Major Keys is solid, but not my favorite. The songs from Fighting Talk through Last Exit is a best part of the album. They seemed much more comfortable playing with each other and "in the pocket" musically on those last songs.

Wtf, i've got commercials breaks every couple of minutes !!!!!! I follow Sot since Day1 (i mean literally d1, whene there was less then 100 viewers) n i've nevere had any commercials before, zero. Gary had a great voice, but it seemed that thru his Career Regardless of whatever style he was playing he would put a over top sappy ballad that didn't fit the rest of the Album, Falling in love with you off of Corridors Power for Example, Nice song with a beautiful melody n solo but really hurts the momentum of the Album!

Great record, as good as electric Savage & maybe a bit 'below' Strange New Flesh (due to the great bonus tracks on the remastered expanded edition). The lineup is Hiseman/Airey/Mole/Moore, their 2nd release of 1977. You've got jazz, symphonic, and some HEAVY rock (thx Gary). We don't have that many examples of Moore's fusion work so this is wonderful/important for that reason alone. Jon Hiseman basically gets away from a more rocking style to return to jazz after this one. "Fighting Talk" just smokes, almost like it's trying to pick a fight with the listener, with Moore & Airey trading some hot licks. The title track is chock full of Moore leads, there's also some funkiness incorporated into the mix with "Major Keys". "Star Maiden / Mysterioso / Quasar" is just flat out fusion mayhem - I love it! "Last Exit" is the band's swan song, a nice way to go out. I wish there were the type of expanded edition that Strange New Flesh received

Good albums, but not near "Valentyne Suite" and their fantastic live album😊

It's just so weird listening to people referring to "songs" when talking about this kind of music. I'm not being pedantic here, it's just that back in the day we'd never refer to an instrumental as a song, and if anything was fairly long, especially with different sections including instrumental passages, we'd never call it a song even if it did have vocals. Everything was a "track" , derived from the tracks on vinyl I suppose.
