@@davej.meister5421 I don't hear Yes, i's too poppy. Pretty good tune though - I like well-made pop. To me Ambrosia is prog like Alan Parsons Project is prog (maybe even a bit less at times, at other times they get more prog), very pop-oriented & mainstream, nothing overly progressive much of the time. Again that's not an insult, I like a number of their songs: "Make Us All Aware", "Time Waits For No One", "Mama Frog" (that one's full-on prog), "Somewhere I've Never Travelled" (ditto), "Danse With Me George", "Can't Let A Woman" (a rocker). I've seen them described as: "Ambrosia fused symphonic art rock with a slickly produced pop sound, resulting in a "melodic prog" style". They started out with heavy CSN&Y influences, then added King Crimson on top of that. I guess this is the result. It's like throwing 10cc (minus the biting humor), CSN&Y, Argent, the Beach Boys & The Beatles into a blender & hitting the On button

1. Amon Düül II 2. Animal Collective (I feel contemporary bands which are labeled indie or alternative are often left out of conversations re: progressive music, extending the idea prog can never = cool or hip[ster], but I especially sense strong prog inclinations in Animal Collective) 3. Aphrodite's Child I am going to go by first name for solo artists, i.e. saving Kevin Ayers for later. Stretching the progressive definition a great deal, lol, but also: Autechre, an English electronic duo who aggressively push the envelope of dance music's forms and textures; their music always challenges and surprises me and puts my mind in an exploratory mode. If Warp Records-type 'techno' can have a prog variation, they are it.

Thanks guys! I took a handful of these as listening assignments and I am reporting back. By the way it really does help if you cite specific albums like Ken is doing here. I've done a first pass on ALL THREE Anglagard albums and oddly enough I liked the 3rd one best so far! They do sometimes get overly complex but usually they arrive on something you can sink your teeth into. Still cycling through on all three releases. Anekdoten (Vemod) is NOT what I thought it would be, it's much darker and spookier than I expected. Good stuff but I haven't got used to the quavery vocals. Atomic Rooster (first album) is one of those where you can HEAR the Sixties turning into the Seventies(!) and for it's time, it's quite good. Pleasantly surprised. Reviure by Atila is REALLY GOOD, including the VERY tasty keyboard work, it really is an amazingly great album. But the hands down PICK OF THE CROP so far is Astra, The Black Chord. It's "OMFG" GREAT from one end to the other. I have moved on to their "The Weirding" and it's just as good or better. BLEW ME AWAY. TASTY guitar work, keys, and vocals!

these are in my heavy rotation: 1. Ambrosia (debut) - so what if it's the only album I own of theirs. it's all I need. 2. Art Bears - The World As It Is Today - all their albums are at the top for me. they're in the RIO category 3. After Dinner - Glass Tube - this gets lumped in with RIO too, but there's a bit of Kate Bush in this Japanese band, and singer Haco continues to grow as a singer and as a musician the only reason I didn't put Arzachel in the #3 spot is that they only recorded the one album, but the same lineup recorded as Uriel, and some like Dave Stewart and Mont Campbell went on to form Egg, and Steve Hillage joined Gong. I like the one self-titled album. it's got blues moments, some Booker T organ funk, lots of psych freak out. and since I obviously like Canterbury and RIO, Kevin Ayers although I feel like he has inconsistent albums. the peaks are high tho...

Pete, how about an episode (or a few) where you have cast members from both Mon & Tues night series to debate whether selected album(s) is/is not a Hard Rock/Metal album (Mon night cast) or is it/is it not Prog Rock/Fusion (Tue night cast), or is the album actually a blend or even all of the above? For example, Moving Pics to me could equally be classified as hard rock or prog rock (but not Fusion), sort of depends on whether one focuses on the hits or the whole album w/ deep cuts. The cast could try to come to a consensus on how much of the album, in %, falls into each category, probably by going through the album track-by-track and debating where each falls. I think BOC has albums that would work for this. As you do with Album Assignment episodes, you could get a cast member to be moderator. A sample cast might be Martin Popoff & Sydney Taylor (HR&metal) and Lamie & Alvarez for Prog/fusion.

Ken Golden: The A in Janne Schaffer's name is prononounced with a short ah! not ei : Janne Schah!ffer. He played a lot with Abba, but he has also played with a swedish very popular curiosity called Electric banana band (Sweden's childrens music band), which was created by a famous swedish conceptual artist: Lasse Åberg, and the music originally accompanied a very popular children's tv program. Schaffer (not Scheiffer, again :) ) has been a very prominent swedish studio musician, and he also played with the musicians of Toto just before they became Toto, on the album Earmeal.

Thanks Johan. Pardon my Swenglish. I've been familiar with Janne's work for decades. I have his early solo albums going back to his first on Four Leaf Clover Records as well as recording with Mads Vinding Group and Svenska Löd Ab. Great player. Someone in Sweden should reissue Ablution. Tried to get Svart interested in reissuing the Pop Workshop albums but no response.

@@lasercd7851 Always a pleasure having you on the show and I especially enjoy the sparring of you and Mr Nasser. Regarding ablution: Maybe you should write to mr Schaffer himself? Seem to be a really kind man. Brusa högre lilla å by Björn J:son Lindh and Schaffer is almost a swedish anthem: "Froth higher little stream" - swedish pastoral new age music.

I actually saw Ark in concert. They happened to be playing in a bar in a London suburb while my wife and I were on vacation there. I dragged my poor wife to see them. There were about 10 people in the bar. I don't have a lot of memories of the band but I do remember that the trains weren't running when their set was over. We were stuck late on a Sunday night. Luckily we were able to flag down a cab driver that took mercy on us and drove us to the hotel.

@@kengolden666 Ark were always a hard working band. I saw them 3 times in 1989 up North, one supporting IQ in Manchester. The irony was this was when John Jowitt was still in Ark, before joining IQ. They were great gigs. Jump to 1991 before I caught them again, but this was when they had changed style to a more conventional rock sound. I did see them one last time in 2010 when they did a home town show at Bilston. We got all the old songs, John Jowitt was there in the crowd. A great night. I doubt your wife has the same impression, but hey you had to do it. We have all been there:)

The Olias of Sunhillow trolling cracked me up LOL A very good record, I might add, no matter what Luis says 😉 Funnily enough, Anglagard would be filed in the penultimate spot in the alphabet (under ä) in their home country, Sweden, here in Finland and a few other countries as well. Änglagård translates to Angel Garden in English so how about that for a happy coincidence...! 😄 And a great great band to boot.
