Cthulhu Lives: New Tales of the Mythos
Episode 3: "In the Tomb of the White Baron" by Tamlan Dipper
Under the cold, indifferent skies of Siberia, a forbidden tomb awaits plunder.
Series playlist: • Cthulhu Lives: New Tal...
Tamlan Dipper is a British author who works as an engineering analyst. His inspirations for the story, apart from the Mythos, were George MacDonald-Fraser, G.K. Chesterton, and Raymond Chandler. An excellent biography of the real von Ungern-Sternberg is The Bloody White Baron, by James Palmer - he was far more bonkers and unsavoury than even this story implies (The Baron, not James Palmer). This was Tamlan's first published short story, but he is a keen creator of Call of Cthulhu, the tabletop roleplaying game.
Tamlan is currently supporting the Hospitallers for Ukraine: www.hospitallers.org.uk

I was out walking the dogs and began to stagger with laughter at this line. I have been on both ends of such a situation, a few times. If we were reading a Biggles adventure it would continue with, “….followed by thirteen sharp jabs to his ribs, married with a skilful feint and concluding with a devastating upper cut…” Cue politically incorrect reference to the wax-nosed unfortunate.*

@@craigoliver8712 If I recall correctly, it was alleged that the nun in question had, without forewarning, applied a compress to an open injury on Sir Ranulph's spine. It should be noted that the nunnery was helping him convalesce. I had the story second hand.

Only 15 mins in and I’m already confident that this is the best of the “new tales of the mythos” yet. Von Ungern was a fantastic choice to write in as a man communing with occult forces, anyone who knows about his life can see how well his story lends itself to such mystical imaginings.

Wow, that one was actually great. A huge percentage of modern Cthulhu mythos stories are kinda lame, but this one is really nicely written, touches upon a very original setting, and pretty cool and weird historical characters. The Baron was such a crazy guy, I wouldn't be surprised he actually searched for something like this IRL. Great narration as always. Ian, you are a treasure.

Makes me think of "Bloody" Baron Roman von Ungern-Sternberg as conjured in Charles Stross' _The Fuller Memorandum_ of the "Laundry Files" series. To anyone interested in dark science fiction, occult secret history, petty office politics and bureaucracy, covert operations and espionage, and a uniquely geometric/calculative take on Lovecraftian terror, I suggest you begin with _The Atrocity Archives._ There's also a well-voiced preamble to Stross' unsettling multiverse in an alternate history story called _A Colder War,_ voiced by Ken Hunt here on YT.

Beautiful realistic story about that crazy time in Russland 1919, when the "Mensjewiki" the white Army, fought the Bolsheviki, the red army. It's still not clear how many people lost their lives, in this hardly ever mentioned war. In the following 8 years, millions upon millions died from the extreme harsh rules from the Reds.

@@williestreiff9314 not the Bolsheviks(i had to look up how to spell it, I'm a bad leftist, lol). The Czech Legion fought for the Tsar and after the revolution they also fought for the whites at certain points. They wanted to get home to Czechoslovakia, which wasn't independent yet, they ended up having to walk from roughly Ukraine area east to Vladivostok on the Pacific Coast and hire ships to take them home from there. They did this in the middle of the Russian civil war and had a hell of a time. At one point the legion was around 100,000 people.

Legit question-can anyone submit a story to be read on the channel, or is it reserved for published authors? Obviously I understand not all submissions qualify or are chosen to be read, but I was just wondering if this is open to casuals as well.
