@@itzelvenmage7434 This war was full of sectarian infighting. In 1978, some Christians under the Marada Movement refused to break the alliance most of the Christians (Lebanese Front) had with Syria from 1976-1978 and continued to fight alongside Assad's forces and against the other Christians. In addition, the Lebanese Forces was originally several competing militias (Tigers, Kateeb) which were violently merged together in 1980 when the leadership of the Tigers Militia was violently purged and the soldiers absorbed to form the Lebanese Forces. The PLO would also fight against the pro-Syrian PNSF, another Palestinian faction who would ultimately win when the last PLO forces were expelled from Sidon in 1991. Shiite infighitng also became a thing later in the war, when Hezbollah (who was backed by Iran) and Amal (backed by Syria) fought against one another. The Israeli-aligned South Lebanon Army also had many Shiites and Druze who fought against their compatriots in the war that lasted from 1982-2000 and was not just a Maronite army.

There are a lot of mistakes in the context.. There's nothing really called "Black Sunday". If you're referring to "Black Saturday", that was in December of 1975, well into the war. April 13th, 1975 was when the clashes happened with the PLO bus that was driving around Ain el-Rammaneh and opened fire on the church. Black Saturday was when the 4 students were murdered and chopped up along with the retaliation the ensued. It wasn't clashes between Christian and Muslim militias - It was between Palestinian militias (PLO) who were predominately Muslim and predominately Christian Kateb (which had mostly Muslim members/soldiers in some areas/cities). It was political, not religious at the core. The army didn't favour the Christians and the Muslims didn't defect or join the PLO. The army were given orders not to take action. Half way through the war, it became too tense within the barracks. Soldiers were sleeping holding their gun under their pillow. Until they eventually decided to just leave and take whatever they could with them and return to their villages. Don't forget, the army fought with the Lebanese Forces at some point and is to date why the LF and Aoun don't get along because Aoun was the General at the time. There was never a "government-allied" Christan militia fighting the PLO. The Kateab/LF was a reaction to the inactive of the government/army in not defending its people. People would commit crimes, murder, rape and then go into the refugee camps untouched.
@Koopinator
@Koopinator 4 жыл бұрын
I was not referring to Black Saturday, i was referring to the day the Bus incident happened, which Wikipedia said was called Black Sunday. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bus_massacre It wasn't just clashes between Palestinian militias and the Kateb, the Palestinian militias had allies such as the Lebanese National Movement and the Progressive Socialist Party, and the Kateb had allies such as the Tigers militia and i felt "Muslim militias" and "Christian militias" were good umbrella terms. With that i didn't mean to say it was a religious conflict. You're right that the army didn't favour the Christians and the Muslims didn't defect or join the PLO during the initial intervention. I was wrong in that regard. When the Christian militias fought against against the PLO and the PLO's allies, the Lebanese army occasionally fought the Muslim militias but not against the Christian militias, and the Christian militias operated within government territory, making them de facto allies up until 1990 when the Lebanese National Movement starts helping the Syrians and fighting the government like you mentioned.
@anthonykantara3050
@anthonykantara3050 4 жыл бұрын
@@Koopinator Again you're wrong. Kataeb wasn't a "Christian party". In the North, like in the city of Tripoli, 70% of the Kataeb soldiers were Muslim. So these umbrella terms are wrong and dangerous to use. "Lebanese army occasionally fought the Muslim militias but not against the Christian militias" Are you kidding me? The Lebanese army, under General Aoun, literally went to war with the Chrisitan Lebanese Forces (the main militia) for the longest time. "the Christian militias operated within government territory, making them de facto allies" The entire country was government territory. What the fuck are you talking about? Militias operated all over the country. There's also no such thing as "defacto allies" You clearly know nothing about this and it's extremely irresponsible of you to spew this shit and try to teach false history.

The current President of Lebanon, Michal Aoun, was a commander who was stationed in Beirut during the later stages of the conflict. He led a revolt against Hafez Al Assad and made considerable efforts to end the occupation of the country. It ended when the Syrian government crushed his forces and killed many of his supporters. He fled to Paris and couldn't return until 2005.

If bachir gemayel was still alive, all of that would have never happened... israel would have gone back home because they wouldn't have any palestinians to fear of, syria would have abandonned their dream of annexing lebanon and pulled back to their little desert and the palestinian refugees would have found another country to occupy and destroy. In only 21 days, bachir unified all the lebanese people under one flag, under one nationalism, under one army and under one strong government. He thaught us to love our country and to say no to any foreign occupier even if it is our arab "brothers". He was the only person with enough balls to stand against the palestinian occupation while everybody was supporting them because of their "victim cards". He was the only smart smart person to understand that our "syrian brothers" weren't here to help us but rather to destroy us. He was the only person to understand that a temporary alliance with israel was necessary to save lebanon from becomming a part of syria or the new palestine. Everything he said back in the day is still true to that day. If you truly love lebanon and only lebanon, you should love bachir. It is really sad that some lebanese hate him without really knowing him or knowing everything he did for lebanon at such a young age (34). Most people hate him because of his alliance with israel without knowing the context and the reason of this alliance and automatically assume that he is a traitor. I say to these people to go cultivate themselves and learn who bachir gemayel really was before talking about him. And also, do u consider israel our enemy and syria our friend? As bas as israel destroyed lebanon, syria destroyed it 10 times more and this is a fact that not a lot of lebanese muslims want to believe. So I think that the real traitor is the lebanese that supports the actions of the syrian regime in lebanon and not the person that tried to save it from it. I personnaly think that if bachir lived only 3 months more, lebanon would still be the best country in the world. Unfortunetly, it is sad to see that not a lot of people know about bachir and most people that heard about him have a bad view of him. Till this day, the lebanon that bachir has dreamed of is still not their and I don't think it will be their soon. Until this day, we can only remember the great lessons that this great man thaught us that we are still using to get past this dark period of time. You made us proud to be lebanese sheikh bachir. The biggest elements intervening in the Syrian civil war were Gulf Arabs, Iran, and Russians - not quite the west. And if it wasn't for Russian aid to the Assad regime, then, Assad would be dead and the civil war would still be chaotic. Russian intervention aided in speeding things up. To be clear, making the civil wars and conflicts faster doesn't mean the good guys win, it just means the war is over faster. So yes, congratulations on be a defeatest smartass. @Koopinator
@Koopinator 4 жыл бұрын
The Second Damascus Agreement is more obscure than the Taif agreement, but it definitely existed. According to "Ending Civil War: Rhodesia and Lebanon in perspective", page 42,"On 13 October Syria launched an air and ground assault, and by day’s end Aoun had sought asylum in the French embassy in Beirut. Aoun’s defeat represented a critical point in the end of the Lebanese civil war. It was quickly followed by a formal agreement between Amal and Hizballah to cease their hostilities. Brokered by Syria and Iran and signed on 5 November 1990, the so-called Second Damascus agreement restated many of the provisions of its predecessor of January 1989. It therefore enshrined Hizballah’s right to carry out offensive operations against Israel and her allies, but circumscribed their freedom of manoeuvre by committing the Party of God to planning its moves in conjunction with other parties through a ‘co-ordination committee’, and to refrain from attacking positions or troops of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL)."

I'm glad I finally checked out a video on this since I've come into contact with so many Lebanese. Fun fact: Peoria, Illinois has a huge Lebanese-American community, all Maronite Christians. Not all came during this conflict, actually most of them migrated to the US during the 1800s. Even the congressman from the area is Lebanese-American, I worked for him once. I learned that "Lebanese" is as much an umbrella term as "American" is; there are a ton of ethnicities living there, more than most Arab countries. I think the Muslims there all want to use the 'Arab' label, while Christians and other groups prefer more specific labels. What exactly was the PLO doing in Lebanon though? Talk about being a horrible guest in someone else's country when you start a civil war against the government sheltering you!

Mohannad yes it is, just like lebanon is. Being arab is not just an ethnicity, it’s an identity. You can be of caucasian ethnicity (for example) but still be arab. Also why does it seem to me that people are ashamed of their identities. Arabs are known for their generosity and their moral values: family for example is sacred and friendships are valued. Yes, we do have our flaws and yes, what’s happening in the middle east today is an all time low in our history but identity, culture and hope are still present. I’m not saying we don’t have cultural differences, we definitely do. But we’re still arabs. Just like europeans are europeans; and they don’t even speak the same language!! Anyways i’m not here to argue i’m just giving my opinion. I hope you have a good day!! :)

Great work despite some mistakes The red area were not controlled by the lebanese government, it was the christian militias (kataeb, lebanese forces, ahrar...etc) + u should have added the areas controlled by the socialits militia (mainly duruze) + for example areas south of beirut like damour were under control of the lebanese forces... But i don't blame u it was very complicated no one can sum it up in a mapping video😂

There is lot of mistakes and inaccuracy in this video; first, the treaty of Cairo wasn't as silly as it's described at the beginning.. It didn't gave the right to a "Fatahland" on borders but more precisely it gave palestinians the right to rule their refugee camps. On the other side, it allowed the christian far-right parties to get arms and create their own militias. Then, the mapping is not so accurate due to the complexity of the situation and the demography in Lebanon, I don't know what were the standards to juge the domination on the map, but for example, in Lebanon you can find two or more parties and religions in one small village, and they may all have their arms and militias inside this village. Same can be applied on entier areas like Chouf department for example. Also, there is nothing about the christian-christian wars between 1984 and 1990, principaly Geagea-Hobeika battles, and for sure, Aoun-Geagea wars that were determinant for the Lebanese Civil War... P.S.: before March 1976, the area of Baabda-Matn was almost controled by the far-right, until the battles of Aintourah and Mtein (end of March 1976). This was also not explained on the map for example.

This vid leaves out the fact that Syria and Amal fought against Hezbollah (and the PLO) in the war of the camps in 1982. Hezbollah and Syria have good relations now but that wasn't always the case.

They began having good relations with each other after the civil war in Syria broke out. Before that there were bad bloods between them. When Emad Moghnie got assassinated some of Hezbollah seniors even accused elements within Syrian government.
