REVIEW ON MASTERBOX KIT #MB3551, MAQUIS - FRENCH RESISTANCE,
YEAR OF RELEASE: 2008
- PART 1 OF ANOTHER SECRET GIFT -
ALL LINKS AT THE END OF THE DESCRIPTION!!!
Hi, guys! Because of a very little favor I did a fellow modeler he let me choose stuff for 20.- € at an online shop. I chose two figure stets and since my choice was cheaper than the sum he allowed me, he added a bottle of Tamiya extra thin - my first one! Again I promised not to mention his name, but I'm sure he will accept this: Thank you very much, my friend!
The first set consists of five figures and I will use the three male resistance members, maybe also the young woman, for my M7 Priest build, which I'll do in the French version. This was the last missing figure set and now there's no more excuse not to start the build. Well, maybe the PE is!

Thanks a lot, Daniel! Yeah, MasterBox and Bronco are my favourite styrene figure brands. MiniArt and ICM are nice too, but MB is superior. :)

Thank you very much, Chalky! You're right, but I like MiniArt, too. Only the quality isn't really consistent. I'm doing an inbox review on another of their figure sets and this time there's not much to complain about. I should be happy, but then there's the set I got last week and that one was really bad in many aspects. I can't understand that. MasterBox do figure sets of very nice quality every time and that's why I like them. :)

Thanks a lot, Tom! Yeah, when I started armour modeling there weren't any civilian figures. Only soldiers. I like the choice we have today. :) Jens

Well I will be getting some things together this weekend and a video too! Your figures will do your build justice as I only will be doing one for my priest. But I have got two for the Marder and all will see on Sunday!!

Thanks a lot, Bob! Maybe I'm a bit over the top with seven, eight or even nine figures. I don't know yet, but I will find out. I'm looking forward to your next video! :)

Almost forgot.....as to glasses, there's a company called Abner (Italian?) that makes photo etch glasses and sun glasses you can get from Evilbay.

Thank you very much, Scott. Yes, indeed, they're really nice. I'll use them along with some French tankers in U.S. uniforms and the Revell (Italeri) M7 Priest. Don't want to say too much about it, but it'll be a very French scene. :)

Still working on figures for my zombie/apocalypse dioramas, so when I saw these figures, bought 3 sets. Started working on the woman and the guy in the upper left of the box art the other day and ran into problems. First it was the womans legs & her height. You have to get the legs up the dress as far as possible and they are a tight fit. Too much pressure and the 2 parts of the skirt will split open. Second is she is a bit taller than a U.S. WW 2 army Tamiya figure AND another 1/35th scale WW 2 German figure, though don't remember what kit it came from. Though I will say the German figure is a little taller than the American. At least gives me a wider variety of height among the figures. Maybe those in Ukraine use a different measuring system for 1/35th scale than those in Japan? !-)Thinking of cutting out the top of the skirt where the torso is to be glued so it's glued directly to the legs. Alternative is leave off the skirt, glue the legs to the torso, then paint pants on her. Worse thing about ALL these figures is attaching the head to the torso. The head has part of the neck attached to it, while the rest of the neck is part of the torso. So when you glue these 2 pieces together, you have a ugly and hard to fill/sand seam line. Looking at putting metal pins in neck of head, use 2 part putty to make a neck and after reaming out the neck part on the torso, glue everything together. Looked, but you haven't done a video on building these figures. Any suggestions/ideas? Anyway, thanks for the video.

I haven't built them yet and I will probably change some limbs and heads to give them the poses I need for the dio. I built MasterBox women before and I did it this way: first glue the legs together (my usual way of building figures), then glue the two halves of the skirt to the legs and see to it that you have the top of legs and skirt level, then glue the torso on top of that. I recommend a slow curing glue like Revell Contacta Professional. Gives you more time for corrections and once cured has a much stronger bond than Tamiya Extra Thin. If possible use clamps to keep the skirt in place after aligning it properly. I didn't have any issues building them so far. The seam of the skirt halves needs some sanding after curing and maybe some spot filling. That's all. Tamiya figures can only be used with Tamiya figures. Their heads are too small and so are their hands. They are to short. Any other company's figures will work together on a dio. If I can't help but using Tamiya figures I change at least their heads. As for the heads, the are the last part I glue to figures. If they're cleaned up well there usually won't be a problem. I let the glue cure thoroughly before attaching the next parts It takes time and there's no use in rushing things.

Thanks for the feedback, ESPECIALLY about the Tamiya figures. This was something I had never thought of until I compared the 3 figures. Never put any figures w/the few armor kits I've built. Pulled out 2 1/35th scale rulers, with Tamiya figure being just under 5 1/2 tall while the German is 6', but then so is the woman. Think that problem is due to the way I have her legs. Will give Revell cement a try as I've been using super glue. Are all Tamiya figures short? In any case, can use them as teenagers.

All 1/35 figures are between 50 and 52 mm tall. That equals 1.75 to 1.82 metres which is somewhat the standard size of Europeans and Americans back in the days. The real issue is, that our eyes or our way to see scale figures is conditioned to wanting all figures of the same size. That's the reason why Tamiya figures - especially older ones - look odd when the are close to the figures made by other manufcturers. If we saw scale figures with the same eyes we see real human beings, we could use all of them on one diorama. Even the 54 mm (1/32) figures could work, because there are people of about 1.90 metres. My main problem with (older) Tamiya figures are the pea heads. They simply look too small to be used with Dragon, MasterBox, ICM, MiniArt, Bronco and Trumpeter figures. Using other heads like resin ones from Hornet can solve at least this problem, but that makes the figures a "little" more expensive - more than 2 € per figure. You can't do that with every figure or you'll go bankrupt. With regards to the female figures, the skirt halves kind of interlock with the legs. That means there's something like a correct position around the legs. You should always spend enough time on dry fitting before final assembly. If the figure is almost or exactly as tall as the male figures, you could shorten her legs from the upper end. You might have to remove some material from the inner sides of the skirt. I hope that helps. :)
