"Once upon a time, there was an old man and an old woman, and they had no children," said Claudia sadly as she washed the dishes after celebrating her fortieth birthday.
"Come on, Claudia, we're still young!" Shane tried soothing his wife in a cheerful voice as he wiped the plates beside her.
The woman grinned and suddenly asked seriously, "Don't you regret being with me? Maybe you could have had children with someone else, but..."
"I don't regret it at all!" Shane said firmly. "Our life hasn't become any worse, has it? They say the first child is the first quarrel, but we have no children, so there have been no quarrels. Is that a bad thing?"
"Of course, it is," Claudia agreed.
She didn't want to argue with her husband about it, especially since they had long ago accepted the fact that they would not have children. They had never even considered breaking up because of it, and now, almost 20 years after getting married, that thought was even more distant.
However, as they grew older, both spouses started having secret thoughts about the possibility of loneliness. Soon after that conversation, Claudia suddenly started feeling unwell and became worried. She didn't have any specific pain, but everything felt different somehow. She grew tired quickly, had unexplained drowsiness, swollen legs, nausea, and no appetite. What if something terrible had happened? How would Shane cope alone?
She went to the doctor, who ordered various tests and referred her to other specialists. Strangely enough, the doctors found no abnormalities, but her condition was not improving!
