I play the trumpet and you can do the same excercise there. I know quite a similar excercise, but I just want to add that how you did it, most of the persons might do it wrong. You told everything right, but if for example some beginners want to improve their height and do this at home they'll make mistakes for sure. So just for some beginners watching this video: once you do this excercise, maybe begin with some shorter excercises, it is really important that you don't change the position of your lips! He said it, but you saw him breathing. But he's professional, he is not changing the position of his lips, so in the beginning maybe start with shorter excercises and try to avoid breathing. Try to do the whole excercise with only taking breath once or at least twice if you take breath in the beginning and once you begin from the upper notes going down!

This video has really helped me. What I noticed today, I really need to keep my torso tight and take in a lot of air and focus that air through my flexed (but relaxed) torso through the arch in the back of my tongue. Keeping my torso tight helps keep the air fast from the get go. This was my missing key. And keeping a flat chin and a tight embouchure. Like Mr. Matonizz said, the angle of the back of the tongue is key. Playing euphonium for over 1 month now after 10years off. Solid high G now. Working towards High B
@takigan
@takigan Жыл бұрын
There's no such thing as "flexed but relaxed". I suppose one could say "partially flexed" as opposed to "fully flexed". A tight torso closes your throat. You can prove this by flexing your torso as tight as you possibly can, and then try to talk. It's impossible to do this without there being some amount of strain in your voice. That's because your throat is partially closed from the muscle tension in your core. A closed throat speeds up the air for the same reason putting your thumb over the end of a waterhose speeds up the water. So it'll certainly help increase your airspeed and thus your high range, but you pay for it with added strain in your sound. It's certainly possible to still make a "pretty good" sound with torso tightening, but the absolute top players in the world with the most world-class sounds will certainly advocate against this. Torso tightening is the "quick and easy" path...the real key is developing good inhaling technique, and efficient aperture control in the embouchure. I'm talking about the level of aperture control where one can generate a freebuzz with the most minimal of lip squeezing and can maintain it without it fizzling out.

Cool :) I feel that ear training is very vital to the process as well...especially in the high range, where the notes are closer together. I teach range development differently, but with brass there's more than one way to achieve the same result. I stick with the method that works best for that particular student. This is another tool that I can have in my belt, so thank you. I'll reference you, of course, if I use this.

Great video! I'm 25 and getting back into my euphonium that I haven't played since high school. I am now a Speech-Language Pathologist and definitely appreciate you highlighting the tongue placements for vowels and how it affects the notes!! Just curious, why @10:35 did you choose the vowel /u/ (Oops) for the low notes, as this vowel is at the top of the vowel quadrilateral? (The vowel quadrilateral is a map of where your tongue is in your mouth when you make different vowel sounds). I would think /ɑ/ (hot) or even /æ/ (hat) would help more?

I've been such a busy teacher the past few years that I have hardly been able to play. I'm currently trying to get back in shape, and I've noticed, whether I'm on tuba or euphonium, that I hit a point where I can't seem to produce a buzz. My lips are free and I'm not pressing the mouthpiece into my face, so I'm not sure what's going on. There's a nice clear tone, and then nothing a half step higher. This tends to be around C5.

I'm a Speech-Language Pathologist and have played trombone and euphonium for over 10 years. This advice is applicable to all brass instruments. Try high vowels like /i/ (heat) or maybe /u/ (hoot). Google "IPA vowel quadrilateral with examples" if you need more help with these vowels for high/mid/low notes. The vowel quadrilateral is a map of where your tongue is in your mouth. Good luck and have fun! 🙂

Here's a very basic question: How are the notes in the 'gap' between the highest pedal tone and the 'normal' range of the instrument being filled in? I have a 'basic' three-valved euphonium and a 'straight' tenor trombone; I can fake such notes somewhat on the trombone but they are of poor quality.
@staccatopeony
@staccatopeony 7 ай бұрын
You would need a 4 valved euphonium for that range really :/ It's possible to fill the range by lip bending of course, but that needs a hell of a tonne of practice to develop reliable accuracy there
@bobjacobson858
@bobjacobson858 7 ай бұрын
@@staccatopeony Thanks! Since my original comment, I've gained a few instruments. I have both a Conn 20J and an Olds 099 tubas, and on these instruments I can get down to a low C on both (but it is weak on the latter instrument). I seem incapable of getting the Bb pedal tone on either. (I've read that at least those big Conn horns are quite good at getting the 'false' tones.) I bought the Olds horn recently--I had considered getting a 4-valved tuba, but then realized the 4th valve wouldn't be of help if I can't loosen my lips enough to buzz that pitch. Having the tubas makes me feel less 'pressure' to play such low notes on the euphonium, trombone, and the Conn 14-I baritone I also have. Interestingly enough, I also have a Conn 14-C alto horn (currently in F, as I haven't installed the extension tubes), and I find that I can get the pedal tone F--but also the F an octave lower, which is the same pitch as the low 'ordinary' F on the tubas! Needless to say, I'm having a lot of fun with these instruments, which also include a Blessing B-125 trumpet, and Olympian, Yamaha, and Conn Director cornets, and an old 1924 Conn "French horn alto' (I usually just call it an old-fashioned mellophone--someone used the terms "antique" and "obsolete" to describe it, but I love playing it.)

Something like range is not determined by how good an improviser you are. It takes time and patience, the common Misconception is that if you simply move your tongue and vowel shape it will fix your range. Give it time. Have patience and realize that there is no rush to play the highest notes possible. Slow and steady practice is the right way about it.

As a brass player and music educator I think you should reevaluate your video. The purpose of the beautiful sounds exercise is to make your tone, vowel shape, and air consistent throughout your slurs. By changing your vowel you are changing your tone quality and causing a lot of tension in your throat which will slow down your technical playing and cause bad habits. When working on high range you really want to focus on how you are producing sounds in your low range. Also, make sure that since octaves are just doubling the fundamental frequency you're trying to make, you are focusing on making your aperture half the size of what it was for the lower octave, and use twice as much air. Think of it like if you put your finger over a garden hose. The same amount of water comes out but since there is less room for it to come out it must move much faster.

The water comes out faster because the limited flow restores the pressure. This scenario is not present in brass playing. The lung pressure is always present just before the aperture.

No… You’re changing your embrasure the whole time that’s really bad and cheating the whole point of the exercise, and you should NEVER EVER have a Eh vowel while playing euphonium or trombone EVER this will make your playing worse later on

There's good fundamental ideas, then it all changes at the extremes of range. This is true for literally anything from voice to brass to sax.

Your air speed explanation is purely myth. The tongue moves as related to embouchure effort. A firmer embouchure produces a higher pitch. It's that simple. I laughed when he said the air goes fester if it is moving downward. Uhm, air is essentially weightless.

Oh, so being an instrumentalist also makes one a professional scientist or engineer? Show me one study that actually measures air speed and correlates it to pitch.

Darryl Jones if im wrong, why is it a widespread tactic used across brass instrumentalists. i dont need a damn study to prove common knowledge. Algirdas Matoniz is a professional for a reason, he wouldn't just put it out there if it wasnt true.

@@chefboyardee2497 if you are referring to the action of the tongue movement, yes it is used by most players and should not be discouraged. To attempt to explain it in terms of "air speed" is simply erroneous. Sometimes "common knowledge" is actually a propogated myth. Not to mention his RIDICULOUS comparison of air over the tongue to a bicycle over a hill. Now if he is speaking metaphorically he should state that in the beginning.
@darryljones9208

@Evan Lin Lips are not ropes in free air. That is an invalid comparison. And the claim that air gains speed because it is going downward is irrelevant in this case. Did the air lose even more speed as it had to travel much farther up from the lungs? If that were the case the air would only flow back to the lungs. It is a ridiculous assertion that he is making.
