Many parents are lost and confused when they get the diagnosis that their child has autism. Some try to look for autism language programs, some look for intervention options, but many dig their head into the sand and think their child will never be able to talk fluently. However, with the right methods, increasing language in toddlers isn’t as impossible as you might think. Improving language in kids with autism starts with an assessment. And this is something I cover and enforce in almost all my videos. But another great strategy for helping your child to develop communication skills is the shoebox program.
The shoebox program is something I’ve come up with that helps in developing language skills using pictures of family members and other familiar objects. In today’s video blog, I’ll outline the steps parents and professionals can take to put this program into place and learn how to improve autism social skills. Teaching language and language learning can be fun, and the shoebox program does just that. He got evaluated at lausd they said he did have that many sign of him being artistic but his behavior has change it like putting him school he pick up other children behavior ..o don't think there give my son the hurt he need they put him in a class with children that has different disorder and kids are like a sponge the way the school system is set up his progress went down

Zones of regulation and Unstuck and On Target with picture cards...and adjunct songs from youtube--paired with repetition and responsive classroom. I also glean from the ABLLS too amongst other things like the AEPS curriculum and modified TSG--as I am currently teaching in a preschool Autism classroom.

Dr. Barbera, thank you so much for all of the information you share. We suspect my 3 yo grandson is on the spectrum. He has single words he will say, occasionally some phrases, he will say a specific word for a few weeks then it seems that word is just lost. I will be caring for him during the day while Mom and Dad are working and am looking forward to implementing these techniques. I hope we will see progress for him. Again thank you so much for sharing all of this, giving us the ability to help my grandson.

Dr. Barbera, thank you for your videos. I did this shoebox method with a middle school child who is new to us over the last year. He is non-verbal. I have pulled a few words out of him painfully, and only involving food and a few items that he is interested in holding and shaking. That has been great, since those words are meaningful to him. However, they are so few! I wanted to expand his vocabulary and his use of his voice. I also try AAC with him, but he cannot yet discriminate between two pictures, so it is slow going with one for one word/item exchange. I found this video and decided to try the shoebox with him. I grabbed some basic pictures and began handing them to him while saying the word. I actually named the color and the item for some reason. So... gray elephant, gray mouse, gray star... and then he said "gray star" as clear as day. I noticed that I was saying each phrase with the same prosody, and he also imitated my prosody. Thanks for this tip. I am excited to do all kinds of things with it! Since then I have tried it with other students to describe action in pictures as well. They love putting the pictures in the box. I am going to become a box collector.

Will definitely implement this. Just ordered the book and looking forward to reading it. Dr. Barbera, I am interested in your opinion on autism and growing up in a bilingual environment. With my three year old daughter recently diagnosed with autism and non verbal but babbling, the therapy takes place in one language, we speak another at home. So, I would much appreciate your input on how to get bilingual autistic children to talk. Actually, we gave up on speaking to her in language 3, I have MT Hungarian, hubby Romanian and in the wider society German is spoken. Hi Dr Barbara - my son is 5yo and has ASD. He is VERY echoic, often walking around the house repeating sentences or passages that he has either read or heard on TV. However, he struggles to answer basic questions relating to books that he is reading (eg “why is the princess sad?” Even if the passage he just read says that the princess was sad because her balloon popped) or if he fell down and you asked “(do you have) sore knee?” He might not answer or will simply say NO even if his knee is quite obviously sore/injured and he is crying. Similarly, if I say “goodnight Ollie” he will respond with “goodnight Ollie” rather than “goodnight mummy”. When it comes to teaching a child like this to answer questions, are you better to first use visual prompts like written answers and model how he might answer the question, then repeat until it is rote learned, and hope that the practice moves on to independent responses, or is it better to try and encourage his listening skills generally through 1-2 part instructions then build the complexity etc and encourage independent answers from the onset without examples? Even though I know that he has a fantastic memory and could easily learn responses to questions I pose in a select number of books we have here at home, his generalisation is poor and so still might not be able to answer questions posed by his teacher/using a new book/in a different environment. I don’t know what to do for the best and would be hugely hugely grateful for any help you might have!

You can do it in two languages but I generally recommend picking one language. Google mary barbera billingual for more resources on the topic.

Hi I have taken the verbal behavior bundle and I am doing the intermediate learner course after the ELC . It’s helping me to get my clients sit longer time when I started pairing them with reinforcement electronics and edible. however I cannot remember where you were talking about teaching the basic mand ?? I saw teaching advanced mand in ILC, thank you

basic manding is in the ELC course and every multiple control program that we do first promotes basic manding. Saying things 3 times and using transfer procedures. I respond more specifically to questions in our private facebook group.

Hi Dr. Barbera, this system is amazing, but I have a couple of questions: 1. Does it work even with actual objects? I have a box with a round opening, can I use actually a real apple, a real bottle of bubbles instead of pictures? 2. When I first introduce the shoebox to my child should I start with objects that he can label already? I was thinking that this could boost his engagement at first. And maybe introduce new words after he gets familiar with the activity. Would that make sense?

@@marybarbera I found that he loves the big hole, because he can kind of peek through it, put his hand in and pull objects out. And he is starting to name them when he pulls them out!!! Is it ok if, after saying the names of the objects three times I give them to him and guide his hand to put them inside saying IN?

My son does not say many words at all so I’m excited to try this method. I do wonder how to correct him saying the sounds for the animals, rather than their names. I’ve tried to reiterate “dog” for six months, but he just makes the doggy noise. He does this for about 8-10 animals. His sounds are really great, so I truly feel he could say the words. He also won’t try to imitate the sound for some animals he sees regularly like cat and chicken.

What do you recommend doing if our household is bilingual? 3 yr old that will be starting preschool this fall with no words but does lots of maamiii when upset or miiii like mine sometimes? Not sure if I should be doing Spanish words or English first? And I believe that is part of the speech delay maybe? Confused with both Spanish and English 😔

Hello, so my son hasn’t been medically diagnosed with autism yet but he does show signs. We are currently doing occupational therapy and he will be starting speech soon. He is 3 years old and has a pretty big vocabulary he is bilingual Spanish and English. We just can’t seem to get him to understand command or put sentences together. My question is with you knowledge would you think the bilingual is something that might be holding him back?

You certainly could but usually we use shoebox for verbal skills and teach 3-5 signs for real items the child wants

Hi Mary, what if my toddler isn’t interested in sitting at the table? For example, my son will want all the cards to shove into the shoebox as quick as possible. In the event that I don’t give them all to him, he leaves the table :(

Hello, this is a creative way of teaching .. I’m sorry to only disagree with cancelling out pictures we think kiddos aren’t exposed too. With asd kiddos especially .. as we know pictures stimulate the verbal word and repetition increases embedding into memory . So I would still use all the pictures ! Please tell me the name of your program you use or are these random pics ? Ty ! I’ll subscribe !

The pictures all depend on what the child likes and is likely to want to repeat/eventually request. Mom, dad, dog, water.

I mean what they like in their environment. If their favorite show is sesame street you could put a picture of elmo, if they love milk then a picture of milk. Join my workshop!

Hi Dr. Barbara i really love watching your videos with many ideas to help children...i have 2yr old she say a lot of words like animals name and their sounds, she know numbers from 1 to 20 and she also know the ABC's songs..and she tells me what letter or numbers that im writing in the board. .but my problem i never hear her saying 2 words together like "daddy work" or " want milk" or "wash face" and she never do conversation to me and she still dont follow or understand any commands and she never give me sign what she wants..but shes good on calling her name..kinda worried if its autism or just delays... I will try this. My son is 2.1yrs old babbles alot, and pull you to what he wants or bring what he wants for you to help him open it. I kind of get frustrated with the babble sound because they seem repetitive. And due to covid 19. He didn't start daycare in May up till this moment. His doctor said he has a language delay. He love when I sing, he eats well, likes alot of crunchy food thou. Sometimes won't come when I call his name He will look at you and continue what his doing. Another thing is should I stop playing KZfaq abc and nursery rhymes for him? We also started a virtual story time and art activity as well as stacking toys which he likes. I need help please. Am pregnant an its early and I Sometimes wish my 2yrs old can say (eat) so I know he is hungry. Thank you Dr Barbera

Does he have any pop out words? If so you may want to add pictures of things he has said before. Also sometimes saying the word, hiding the picture or holding it back until you get a sound or word can work. I talk more about all this in my online courses. I have a high functioning autistic grandson age 4. He can randomly read difficult words correctly like yogurt or birthday, but struggles with cat, hat, plate etc. Could the shoe box technique be used to teach phonics for such a child? I am homeschooling him two days a week. He is at home the rest of the week with his siblings. He was a micro preemie born at 22 weeks gestation.

Hi My son is not diagnosed yet(still in line for behavioral check up) but i can tell that there are red flags. He can memorize 50 states of America in alphabetical order and from smallest to biggest state. Then all the planets,minor planets dwarf planets the galaxy star etc. But he is so lazy to answer sometimes when you ask him like what is your name how old are you something like that. But if he is in the mood to answer he can answer it. One of the red flag i notice is when he lined up his cars or any toys and if one of them falls out of line he will cry so hard. He can compose a sentence when he want to but he cant express what he wanted to tell us most often. He can say, Mommy i want milk glass.. It means he want his milk in a glass.. Or when i told him Son lets take a shower, he will answer, No i dont want to take a shower or when you told him to sleep he will say No i dont want to sleep something like that.. My question is, is there any of you experienced like what i experienced with my child? My son has a great memory, like when he is counting and stops like at #10 then he will do something for a while, when he counted again he will start at #11. Also his sleeping habit is not normal, he is a night owl at the age of 4. He is turning 5 soon and we are still waiting for our schedule with the Developmental Pediatrician. I just want to know if anyone knows which category he is in.. So i have an idea while waiting for our schedule. Lastly when he is like 1 year old he doesnt have an eye contact, but now will turned around or look at you when i called his name. Thank you very much.. Stay safe everyone

Can you help me understand why we put the pictures in the box? My son is great at flashcards and we have pictures of common items in the house and pictures of family that he says. But he does tend to put them in a line

It is usually reinforcing to the child and helps it become a mand because the child is requesting the card to put in the box.

My 2.4 years old girl dont respond to her name and loosing vocabulary that she had at age of 1.5...but she stil sings poems like A B C and 1 2 3 she gives me smiles she palys with me she loves kids and wanna go park she is never iritated of noise she is never frustrated of gathrings...i just wanna know is it autism?

So worried about my 4 year old, he has regressed since Covid and school closure. He is not diagnosed with autism, but is showing signs. He speaks in whole sentences and knows alot of words, but speaks mostly only when he wants something. He doesn't really engage in conversational speech and does echolali, when asked certain questions. Anyone experience anything similar and how can any program you have work for a child like this that can speak in sentences, some echolalia, but mainly interested in improving conversational speech, since he is 4 years old.

Thanks so much for your help For all parents specially mother going through this may God give you strength I've 4 years old boy who is only saying fews words. Today he said something and tomorrow he can he start saying his name when he was 2 and now nothing he never said mom or dad. His Dr I don't know if she doesn't care or she doesn't know until know she can even Tell us what's is going on with the kid. His always screemy Sometimes I feel so lost so lonely Just need somebody to tell me everything will be fine. We speak 3 languages so first we taught it was the cause

My daughter just turned two. She knows what she wants, she’ll bring me her cup and whine, I’ll know she wants milk. I’ll take the cup and say milk a bunch of times trying to get her to say milk back but she won’t she’ll just whine. At most she’ll just start babbling back to me. And that’s just one example. If I tell her to grab something she will, or come here she will, etc. she only says mama or dada sometimes mostly when she wants something really bad. She just very recently started saying banana (she says nana) but that’s it. I ordered the flash cards from amazon to try this. As far as everything else I’ve seen you mention in other videos, she doesn’t have any eating aversions, she pretty much eats everything. She uses utensils, were working on a regular cup she does use straws and everything too. I’m just wondering if you have anything else I may be able to try, or any tips? Thank you! & thank you for all your videos!
