Rivers pruning is a type of pruning mentioned in Pons' book. "The Fig Trees of the Baleric Islands." He describes a form of pinching that commercial growers use to increase production and to time harvests for a second main crop late in the season. I've even accomplished the technique here, so I know it works, but it's not for everyone. You need a long growing season, but this is cash money for anyone trying to extend their harvest or to avoid monsoon season in the South.

So: Pinch tips on ~June 1. Then pinch tips again ~July 1. Spread branches to maximize light. Keep up with water and nutrients. Zones ~6-7.

Just search "tree branch spreader" on amazon and you'll see some devices you can use to spread them out.

I got tons of fruit from pinching. Only problem was most were late buds didn’t ripen early enough. Sure wish I lived further south. 😌

Hiya Ross. At 4:01 what is at the base of the trees wrapped in ziplock bags with black wire wrapped around them? thanks.

That would be air layers, you can see the branches sticking out from the bags. Expose the cambium and a lightly moist medium and they will root into it. It's easier than rooting a cutting because they have the support of still being connected to the tree and you chop it only when its own roots are developed.

Thank for the info Ross! You said this is the procedure for your Inground figs. How does the process differ for potted figs ?

For areas with a shorter growing season, do they often just encourage the breba? Also at what temps do you uncover your low tunnel?

Just an FYI: Butterfly Bush is an invasive species. It'd be a good idea to remove it and replace it with something native.
