I have one of these jigs and fitted hardened file guide steel on edges of knife holder. I then clamp knife ONCE with the 2 Allen keys in the holder and do up the big knob. To do other side I just undo the big Knob and turn the whole thing around. Thats the why there's 2 threaded holes for the knob. Knife stays in one place through the whole process. Plunge lines stay equal. Only have to use the Knob to change sides. I don't touch Allen bolts until both sides are finished. Works for me

Best jig I’ve seen in the market ever! To the machinist: great job Sir! I respect the old timers and their ways; they did more with less than we do now with more technology, and also they carry a very particular knowledge (wisdom + experience) that is not taught in any schools in this world. Thank you for sharing.

Just received delivery of the $230 version, on time and even better than I had hoped for. Just had a practice on an old knife blank and on the very first attempt it produced a perfect bevel, just as promised in this video. I cannot recommend this jig highly enough, the standout feature of this jig is the skilled but simple engineering, nothing complicated but very well made and will literally last forever, I had this delivered to the UK so dont forget to add import tax. All in all, very well made, robust, accurate and very easy to use, well done to all involved from a very happy customer. Thank you.

must say that for a hobbyist, there are simple ways in obtaining and making a beveling jig, may not look as fancy and not be as heavy but it will work and its cheap. if you are selling the knifes and time / best quality possible really matters, a jig like this will pay for itself. always just a matter of perspective
@michaelandersen5453
@michaelandersen5453 6 жыл бұрын
Just don't have the skill to get a perfect grind. and even with the jig you have to be careful you can over grind where you don't want it to. I think what is worst than a jig is CNC and water jet cut blanks and the knife maker says it is hand made. well partially right but if you have to make 15 knives at a time, then a water jet blank i guess is necessary. Like making leather holsters in quantity and having a press and jig to cut them out. It just is what it is. we should not judge everyone on their level of craftsmanship or how far into craftsmanship they want to go.

Great idea...put carbide plates on the sides of the piece that holds your blade. Then you can also use it as a file guide for starting your bevels evenly at the same time as a bevel angle jig

I definitely want one of these, eventually as I get further into knife making. I noticed you used channel locks to adjust the angle w/o loosening the allen head. Might I suggest putting a hole through the round, to use the provided Allen wrench or screw driver for leverage and fine adjustment? I know that’s what I’ll be doing to mine, if I ever can get one. Great product!

Great work Mark and Robert. I would also like to point out that some of us like doing free hand, not because of some snobbish, elitist attitude, it just what makes us comfortable at the grinder. It's bullshit to say using a jig is cheating, it's not about that, what it's about is what works for 'you' the individual...what makes you comfortable at the grinder, what feels right as you pull the steel across the belt/platen/contact wheel etc. Oh and Robert, don't forget to tell the good folks about hearing protection, any repeated exposure to noise even at the db's of the grinder is putting themselves at risk for tinnitus 😉.

Suburban Knife-Maker hey thank you! Mark certainly puts out great stuff! Yes free handing is awesome! I just wanted to point out exactly like you said. It's there if you would like to use it and no shame if you do! I believe any method is valid, so long as you're making some incredible knives!!! Thanks so much for watching!

I've had thoughts of such a jig but with additional features such as a gauge on the side (by the lock down screw) showing the angle(s). Having such a feature would allow you to set up the jig for consistent, repetitive, knife grinds. I also notice that you started your demo with the tip of the blade already ground. Could you explain which method you used to align the blank before any grinding is performed? Thanks in advance. I do like the product and I will purchase one soon.

LJ240 I think you may be referring to the other side that was already ground. The whole bevel has been made during this video. I never do any angle measurements. I start grinding until I hit my edge scribe or the bevel scribe and then adjust the jig to meet my other mark accordingly. As far as lining it up goes, I just place the blank in the jig parallel to the top of the jig and grind away! Hope this answers your question!

Great video and jig, thank you. Yet, I need to ask this. As you're grinding the bevel, aren't you supposed to keep a straight line of motion even when you come closer to the tip, instead of pulling it away from the belt in a curved manner? Because most other videos I saw insist on that. I'm asking this as a noob knife maker, not to criticize.

I've always walked it out! I honestly don't know how you would do it any other way unless you have an entirely flat edge like a cleaver. If your edge is curved for the belly of the knife, you will have to walk it out every time to ensure the tip is ground properly. As long ans your bevel meets the center line of your edge to the bevel line on the side of your knife, you're golden!

If I were making this jig, I'd add some way to maintain the exact height of the blade when changing sides. Even slight changes in height of the blade will result in a different angle. Slight, but still different. Since this video is 2-1/2 years old, maybe this has been added.

The clamp can actually come out of the jig and be flipped around to be put in the exact same position. I apologize for not displaying this in the video.

Only the main portion of the bevel can be done hollow grind. The tip would have to be done free hand.
