Finally! One of the rarest sets I have ever been able to show on video. I have had this for over 8 months and waiting for the perfect day to make the video. It was a full day of production time baking washing and prepping. A collector would never open a mint sealed item, but for me finding it sealed shows me exactly what came with it at the time. The set was really easy to set it up and use. I do think the packing the cake into the molds makes for a HARD cake! They were pretty hard and tough to decorate with the Gobble-DeGoop because the cake was not like a a moist cake that you would think of for decorating. The process was pretty unique and as you can see time consuming if you want to test as much as possible. I would not come back and revisit a set like this and why I did as much as possible on video. I never imagined it would take so long and become the longest video I have ever made. It is like sitting and watching a feature movie at the theater!. Let me know what you think of this set. I have my eyes on a few more which are high up in the $$ and since my budget is no longer, I have to be really careful. Kakeroop? I agree! I just LOOOOOOVE watching him explore the package, the instructions, the tools, the toys, the little details in everything❤ Especially a piece like this that is extremely rare and old. Anybody who grew up with these can relive their fond memories and rediscover at the same pace as LPS because any time he opens up something for us, it is his first time for him too and there's no edit, so we all share the moment together and it is great❤ No background music, no special effects, no fluff. Only good content 😊

i'm glad you're one of those people who'd actually show and play with the contents of very old toy kits despite their high value, otherwise how would we really know how some of these kits would work if they're stored in a shelf untouched for a very long time? like i get that people love to collect these and the act of preserving bits of history is nice, but at least once in a while, someone's got to use them as intended at some point

The cakes were much easier to get out of the pan.... I am sure now, it has a lot to do with the age of the mixes. However, it does not take away from the glorious memories of this toy. When I got it, for my birthday, we all made cakes at my party.... we had so much fun!

@@pillbugheart It really is wonderful.... we loved our favorite toys just as much as today's generation. I loved all the Thing Maker toys.... but my ultimate favorite toys were the Johnny West toys... all the horses, buggies and figures. Just remember, one day, Tickle Me Elmo will be considered an antique, and kids in the future will be asking, who were the Mutant Teenage Ninja Turtles..... probably the only toy with real sustaining power over generations and generations to come is Lego!

Yes, I can remember the cakes were firm, but they were moist. They were sturdy for decorating. I would assume the age of the mixes has something do with the texture. As I do recall, yes, they were dense, but moist, like a firm cup cake. I think I am as nervous and excited as you are about this!

I had this toy, too. Yes, the cakes were dense, but cakes in general were rather denser than they have been for a long time. It was some time in the '70s when mixes started having the 'texturizer' additives put in, the stuff that made the batter kind of stretchy-rubbery. All of those TV commercials about cakes being light enough to cut with a feather and all that nonsense, just an advertising gimmick. People had wanted non-gummy, non-crumbly 'light' cakes, but not those flavored puffs of sugar and chemicals. You're right, these needed to be firmer to stand up to children decorating them, being handled a bit.

The oven is so pretty. I love the art on it. Normally I don’t like 60-70s styled items. But the little oven is adorable. I’d probs find ways to use it other than this. Lol Also just found your channel last night. I don’t like asmr, but some how toy opening videos for parents to see if they are safe for kids and videos like these really relax me. Not only is it toys. Lol which already gives me a positive vibe to think of but it’s a trying out new ways to look at an item. They are slow paced trying to figure out the toy or how things work. Nice to have a change of pace. Some people may be in it for editing and quick But it feels like I’m actually there trying out the cooking toy with you when it’s slow and barely edited. Everything feels like it’s very quick paced and this kinda slows things down. Even KZfaq videos have a very fast pace and here these videos are slow and steady. Just here to chill. Even when there’s goof ups, it’s there. It’s nice to see things like it really is. Not perfect, slow and chill. Also chiclet and tickle me Elmo!

Nice meeting you through the video :) I appreciate your insight and thorough understanding of the channel. It has been 10 years and 7000+ videos. My style of video making if you call it that, does have a following of regular watchers (Thank you everyone). When I make a video I try and think like a kid as well as a creator trying to answer the questions I would have if I were watching. I change the camera angle, show aspects of an item that might not be what it was originally intended for and do as complete a process as possible. Thanks again for taking the time to watch, it means a lot to me and the channel.

Oh wow - this was totally a trip down memory lane for me! Had this toy and loved it!! Though I seem to recall making the cakes as two layers - the flat one on the bottom and the “egg” one on top. That way you can put the hands in between the layers to make them stay. Thanks for your video - totally great & watched the whole thing!

Patent for cooking spray was made in 1957. This little oven is just so HR puff n stuff cute. I saw this in my recommendation and couldn’t click on it fast enough. So glad I did.chicklets

let kooky kakes be your makery bakery! yes, this one was part of the wave of mattel incredibly HOT products to make scalding hot rubbery bugs, flowers and cakes. my sis ter and i still have scars from using these products, BUT i wouldn't trade that time for anything. they were FUN! as far as the names on the mixes, the other sets had stuff called "plastigoop", so maybe they were playing off of that and making it seem like it was a big family of toys you HAD to get. nice to see this new, since it sure didn't stay that way for long.

I think it would have been so much fun for a child back then to play with this toy, and probably it would have been easier to prepare the recipes when the mixes were fresh. PAM cooking spray was introduced in 1961.... I had to look it up.... You got me curious.... because I thought it came out in the mid 1970's..... so maybe it was regional at first?

I had a version of this. I don't remember the cake part, I don't remember mine having that. The one I had was more centered on making bugs and creepy crawlers. You would fill the mold with a liquid goo of different colors and flavors. You would put in oven and it would setup. Pop them out of mold and you'd have a cockroach, or a spider that was wiggly and that you could eat. It was popular for about a day, or until a new hot wheel, or comic book came out. The bugs didn't taste that great, kinda bland. It was a Christmas present.

That was the Thing Maker. There was one for flowers too, which I had. I also had this toy.... which was the edible version of the Thing Maker.

The edible insects maker you remember, didn't last very long.... they then came out with this toy..... The Thing maker remained for several years, with the non edible plasti goo. When parents started complaining about kids getting burns.... they stopped making the toy... darn shame... we burned our fingers, licked them, then went back to making bugs and flowers.

@LadyDragonsblood I hate how overly safe and sterile parents have made the toy industry. They literally ruined the Easy Bake oven if you see what it looks like these days. It looks so stupid. I remember playing with real darts with my brother as a kid in the 80s. My grandma nearly stroked out one day when she was babysitting us and he accidentally (so he said lol) threw a dart into my arm. I was more in shock than anything, but it wasn’t a big deal at the end of the day. It wasn’t some major injury (though I’m quite grateful he didn’t throw it into my eye and blind me!). Kids are meant to hurt themselves here and there as they learn about the world and what our limitations are. I think parents were likely less concerned about little crap like kids getting minor burns and such, and were more focused on opportunities to get easy money via lawsuits, sadly enough.

I think something like this would make a great Halloween cookie decorating kit. But with everything already made & you just decorate them with various monster pieces. Otherwise it's a neat concept & I absolutely love the little oven thing. It alone is a good display piece.

U also have to take into account tht for chocolate mix they add coco powder inaddition to flour and other dry ingredients where as with yellow(vanilla) cake mix does not have that extra dry ingredient. So sometimes a chocolate cake may require a dash (just a dash) more of milk or a wet ingredient than a yellow cake.

PAM was the first cooking spray ever invented. It was invented in 1957 and introduced on the market in 1961. So it sounds like they would have had that option when this toy was on the market. Just thought I’d let you know! :)

Your cake mix would have benefited from a tablespoon of melted butter to help bind and set it. The consistency seems to be like a graham cracker/sugar crust found in many cheesecake recipes. Normal cake mix is powdery and doesn't sound like gravel when mixing.

Well, you have to consider the mix is 53 years old.... also, the cakes WERE dense, a bit moister, but the texture here is close. They were supposed to be all "bumpy" to create a "monster" texture. Also, they slid out of the molds easily. As I said, I am sure the age of the mixes changed the molecular structure of the product a bit.

There's fat in the mix, but he didn't close the top on the oven while it was preheating for the oven to get hot enough, so the fat didn't melt and bake into the dry mixture. He finally got it right with the first vanilla cake, which is why it didn't crumble apart.

Seems that a toothpick would've been a better tool to use to get these cakes out of pans due to the cakes being so crumbly. Small and thin enough to get thru the edgesof the cake and yet enough leverage to separate them from the pans

I'm thinking because of how old the mix is you may have needed a little bit more water. If you go by feel, or how it looks, you'd be able to get it to mix and be damp.
